A MILLION LITTLE THINGS – “Pilot” (ABC/Jack Rowand)
RON LIVINGSTON, DAVID GIUNTOLI, JAMES RODAY, ROMANY MALCO JR

Wednesday is a particularly brutal day for television (at least for me!), so we have a lot to go through. Let’s discuss ONE CHICAGO (AKA CHICAGO MED, CHICAGO FIRE, and CHICAGO P.D.), THE GOLDBERGS, MODERN FAMILY, SINGLE PARENTS, and A MILLION LITTLE THINGS…

THE GOLDBERGS: Given how much Beverly smothers her kids, it truly would have taken the most insane circumstances for her to forget Adam’s birthday. Barry’s engagement made perfect sense…and allowed for a plausible SIXTEEN CANDLES homage.

CHICAGO MED: Emily is pregnant? Yiiiiiiiiiikes. I’m excited that Will and Natalie are engaged (but worried about where they’ll end up), but, uh, what did Ava do to make sure that OR hybrid got funded?! (I’m also bummed out that Dr. Reese is out, but hope she’ll be back at some point.)

MODERN FAMILY: The episode felt more like a filler/leftover installment than the premiere of the potentially final season of the series; it almost felt as if they didn’t have the cast at the same time, so they kept many of them as separate as possible to make the best use of what they had.

CHICAGO FIRE: Television is one of the most fickle entertainment venues to get invested in. Shows get canceled, actors leave, networks/studios/life gets in the way; there’s no guarantee the creative vision will even get the chance to play out. So Monica Raymund showing up—unpublicized—in the premiere, months after she said she was done? Classy on everyone’s parts. Yes, Dawson is still gone, but this gave fans one more episode with the character, a chance to properly wrap up her story, and move on. (If only every show that lost one of its stars was granted this wonderful opportunity…)

SINGLE PARENTS: SINGLE PARENTS has a few good pieces, but it hasn’t quite gelled, for me, yet. That being said, it still feels like the strongest comedy pilot of the fall, so here’s hoping it actually comes together ASAP.

CHICAGO P.D.: Is it just me, or was there weird sexual tension between Voight and Anne Heche’s Katherine Brennan? But man, that end scene with Voight watching Olinsky’s funeral was afar was sad.

A MILLION LITTLE THINGS: I get why this show won’t be for everyone, but I dug it. It helps the cast is so, so solid; if it was in the hands of lesser actors, it could feel much cheesier. (I’ve also had the benefit of seeing the next two episodes, and it gets even stronger from there.) I’m curious, though, to those who watched it: were you surprised by the Eddie and Delilah twist?
