MURPHY BROWN and TIMELESS

“Happy New Year” – The gang tries to distract Murphy from worrying about Avery’s assignment in Kabul by getting her to attend the special 100th anniversary New Year’s Eve celebration at Phil’s Bar, on the first season finale of the revival of MURPHY BROWN, Thursday, Dec. 20 (9:30-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Two finales on Thursday, but it’s still (kind of) TBD about whether we’ll see more from either show. Let’s talk about what was on last night…

MURPHY BROWN: It’s kind of sad that the finale felt like the weakest episode of the season. I’m so, so, so thankful the show didn’t kill off or gravely wound Avery (which is something I was concerned they’d do), but it felt like there was really nothing in the episode. There were guest stars, and Phil’s will be celebrating it’s 100th anniversary in 2019, but it was mostly a passive Murphy while Avery was doing work—most of which we barely saw. The reunion at the end was sweet, but it felt like they stretched 5 minutes of material into a full episode. Given the ratings aren’t bonkers good, it’ll be really unfortunate if this is the new end of the show.

TIMELESS: Man, I loved the end of the show. In hindsight, how could it not end with Lucy giving Flynn the journal? It was set up from the start! (Though, the sci-fi nerd in me kind of wonders if she told him too much about the future and if that changes anything. But that’s also probably a time travel wormhole no one should go down.)

While it was really sad that Flynn died, I do agree with co-creator Shawn Ryan that in many ways it was a happy ending. And I’m really glad Lucy/Wyatt and Rufus/Jiya got to be happy, too. (Also, Agent Christopher FINALLY GOT TO TIME TRAVEL.)

It was interesting that the show had Flynn kill Jessica—eliminating the possibility of Wyatt having to contend with that choice—and Emma was killed by an enemy bullet. Though the core Time Team would have been justified in either killing, they were able to save the day without having to really get their hands dirty.
