THE GOOD PLACE: D’Arcy Carden on Kicking Butt as Janet

THE GOOD PLACE’s D’Arcy Carden (Janet) had one heck of a one-two punch of episodes with “Don’t Let the Good Life Pass You By” and “Janet(s).”

While “Janet(s)” was a stunning showcase of Carden’s talents, as she portrayed virtually all of the characters in their Janet-forms (thanks to them needing to hide out in her void), “DLtGLPYB” was its own challenge.

“It was one of the most exciting weeks of my life,” she recalls of filming Janet’s intense bar fight. “I did get to do a lot of fight choreography. Obviously what we filmed was exciting, but working with the stunt team—we’re not [normally] a very stunt-y show—we had a guy named Jeff Imada, who did the BOURNE movies, JOHN WICK, he came and really treated us like we were legit.”

“He was very patient, very informative,” Manny Jacinto (Jason) adds. “He made us feel safe.”

The experience led Carden to appreciate stunt workers in a new way. “I am so impressed with people whose career is to do stunts, because it’s obviously so physically exhausting and impressive,” Carden says. “But they’re also not looking for glory. The whole point is to keep their head down and not be seen. They’re heroes to me.”

Carden got to relive the experience when the episode aired on November 15. “Social media was pretty fun to see,” she says with a laugh. “It’s such a fun thing to be on a show like this where there are all these twists and turns. When you’re watching the first half of that episode, you would never guess it was how it would end!”

Adds Jacinto: “Maybe in a different show, it would feel like it was coming out of left field. The fact that Janet could do it is somewhat viable and freaking awesome.”
