LEGION will come to an end with its upcoming third season—something series creator Noah Hawley is pleased about.

“I think endings are what gives stories meaning,” he told reporters during the show’s Television Critics Association panel. “I said last year, had never done a second season of anything. I always thought of this as a complete story …this just felt like a natural place to end it.”

Hawley pointed out that viewers met David at his “lowest point,” and he gradually go to a better place—before spiraling last season. Now, in the show’s final season, “can he get back to some kind of good place or is he gone for good?” he said. “Once we tell that story, it feels like we’re going back to the beginning of the cycle [of mental illness].”

Marvel boss Jeph Loeb noted Hawley pitched “the end of the story along with the beginning of the story [back before the series came to be].”

But he’s not necessarily ready to close to the door on the television adaption with season 3. “This is the end of this particular graphic novel,” Loeb said. “If Noah came back to us [and the cast was available]…we would certainly—and we hope FX—say let’s tell the next story.”

But in the meantime, the series is pulling out big stops for the final year. FX announced that Stephanie Corneliussen will play David Haller’s (Dan Stevens) mother, Gabrielle, while Harry Lloyd has been cast as his father, Professor X.
