When Adam Levine abruptly left THE VOICE in May—after initially signing on for the next season—the show reached out to former coach Gwen Stefani to fill his slot.

“I haven’t talked about it yet, because it was such a shock,” Stefani said in the video below, during an appearance on THE TALK. “I wanted to come back so bad. I mean, the show is so fun. And Adam’s actually the first person to reach out to me when they were trying to pitch me the show [originally]. He texted me out of nowhere, and I didn’t even really know him. To think that he’s not going to be there is like bittersweet.”

Stefani previously coached THE VOICE seasons 7, 9, and 12. She’ll be joined by Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, and season 16 champ John Legend for the upcoming season 17.

The singer confirmed things moved quick for her to return. “It was literally a text and then my manager called,” she said. “[But] every season it’s been like that.”
