When it came to the new ABC competition series FAMILY FOOD FIGHT, IRON CHEF’s Cat Cora really, really wanted to score a job as a judge.

On FAMILY FOOD FIGHT, families face off against each other and try to impress the judges (Cora and Graham Elliot) and host/producer Ayesha Curry. But prior to the show starting production, Cora went out of her way to prove her dedication to getting the job to Curry.

“We had a Skype session, and she had a t-shirt on that she had made airbrushed with my face on it,” Curry recalled to reporters with a laugh. “She said she wasn’t going to take it off until she got the job. There was a video compiled of all these moments where she’s wearing the t-shirt. There’s no way that was one day.”

“I was running, I was in the shower, I was cooking, I was with my family having Shabbat,” Cora added. “[I said,] ‘I need this job, I want this job, I want to be working with you.’”

Fortunately for Cora, the feeling was mutual. “Going into this, I knew I wanted a strong judging panel,” Curry said. “I wanted people with a history of culinary [expertise]..she is the epitome of that. The first woman inducted into the Culinary [Hall of Fame] ….it doesn’t get any cooler than that. I’m like the people on the show. I don’t have a professional culinary background…I knew I needed two people by my side who had that. I knew I wanted there to be two women on the panel; I knew I had to get Cat.”

With her panel set, Curry is excited for America to see the family bonding on the series. “Food is a vessel for many things, but more importantly, it brings people together,” she said. “It’s a family cooking competition. It’s multi-generational…you would think the families would start butting heads. It’s more internal. You see they work through it and come out on top. You’ll see a lot of love. It’s competitive, but not combative.”

Think they were kidding about the shirt? Cora posted the video she sent Curry on Instagram…
