After a prolonged speculation, Bonnie Hammer, Chairman of NBCUniversal Direct-to-Consumer and Digital Enterprises, confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that THE OFFICE will leave Netflix when its deal expires in early 2021. After that, the comedy series will stream exclusively on the upcoming NBCUniversal digital platform.

“THE OFFICE has become a staple of pop-culture and is a rare gem whose relevance continues to grow at a time when fans have more entertainment choices than ever before,” said Hammer in a statement. “We can’t wait to welcome the gang from Dunder Mifflin to NBCUniversal’s new streaming service.”

UPDATED (June 25, 3:29 PM PT): Netflix released its own statement: “We’re sad that NBC has decided to take The Office back for its own streaming platform — but members can binge watch the show to their hearts’ content ad-free on Netflix until January 2021.”

The move is likely the first step in a number of shows being pulled from Netflix, Hulu, etc., as places like NBCUniversal and Warner Bros. attempt to launch their own streaming platforms. FRIENDS made headlines in late 2018 when it was first reported the show might be leaving Netflix; Warner Bros., who owns the show, made a one-year deal with Netflix to keep it available “throughout 2019.”
