The Monday, November 25 episode of PRODIGAL SON provided another glimpse at the increasingly intriguing Gil (Lou Diamond Phillips) and Jessica (Bellamy Young) relationship.

After Malcolm spent much of the hour avoiding having any sort of serious conversation with his mother, Jessica came to visit Gil to get answers. While Gil initially tried to protect his protege, he eventually admitted that the Bright was struggling with the reveal that the girl in the box was actually real.

“We denied his pain for years, and insisted this girl he found was the stuff of dreams,” a horrified Jessica lamented. But as Gil tried to soothe her, his comfort turned physical—albeit still arguably platonic.

“There’s a lot of story that we don’t haven’t told you and that we haven’t seen,” co-creator Chris Fedak teases. “There’s definitely something there. It’s been 20 years since Gil arrested Martin Whitly. Over [that] time, Bright was looking for a father figure and someone he could trust, and Gil and him struck up their friendship. Jessica, even though she didn’t approve of Bright spending time with police officers, there’s definitely a dynamic there and it’s just like a lot of water under that bridge. Like every other thing in regards to the Whitly family, that water runs deep.”

Though the duo got “close,” “what we’re seeing now in the show is the closest that they’ve ever been,” co-creator Sam Sklaver adds. “Not to spoil anything, but just as a viewer, I love Bellamy Young and Lou Diamond Phillips together. Anytime Chris and I can get them in a scene together, it’s a box that we always need to check. So we love what the two of them are bringing to the characters, into the relationship, and it is far from over.”

However, don’t expect answers in the very new future. “We’ll get a little more insight into it,” Fedak previews. “Right now we’re enjoying the dynamic of Jessica’s mission to get Martin [kicked out] out of [his institution]. Right now, that’s her MO.”

And she just might take a step forward with that in next week’s fall finale…
