CHICAGO FIRE’s Jesse Spencer and Derek Haas Tease One of the Biggest Flames Ever

The CHICAGO FIRE team will be pushed out of their comfort zone on the Wednesday, January 15 episode when Firehouse 51 is forced to bunk with the fame-chasing Firehouse 20.

“There’s [only] so many scenes you have at your [own] firehouse,” CHICAGO FIRE executive producer Derek Haas points out. “They’ve been bucking up against [Firehouse 21] because of their territory overlapping [so] how many different antagonistic relationships can we throw in?”

With Captain Delaney having tension with Casey (Jesse Spencer), Severide (Taylor Kinney), and Herrmann (David Eigenberg), while Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo), Foster (Annie Ilonzeh), and Brett (Kara Killmer) are reunited with the group that ruined their planned “Women Only” room at 51, “They’re going to bump heads,” Spencer teases. Adds Haas, “As you can imagine, that is a writer’s paradise to get to work in.”

Complicating matters? One of the show’s biggest fires ever. “You’re always looking for a variation on anything we’ve done in the past and how do you raise the stakes within a setting,” Haas notes. “One area had been wanting to explore was a dry cleaner, because you have density of material and fabrics and then you also have all the chemicals that you know go into dry cleaning, so we set it in the dry cleaning.”

Which means 50 and 21 will end up having to come together. “They’ll need each other, which is basically the show in a nutshell,” Spencer says. “We can bump heads, and have disagreement, and then, all of a sudden, the next moment, you’re desperately trying to help each other.”
