BONES: Yanks in the UK

September 4, 2008 by

BONES is back! Did you like the episode? Since there were two cases, I’m going to separate this review into two sections, and each section will have its own parameters, like last season. The Case, The Squints, and B+B.

Case #1: The American Heiress, Portia Frampton
Booth and Brennan are teamed up with lothario Dr. Wexler from Oxford and stiff upper lipper, Scotland Yard Inspector Cate Pritchard. B+B like their counterparts, but it seems Wex and Pritch aren’t too fond of one another. Portia Frampton, daughter of an American, was found at the bottom of the Thames River. I actually thought this case played out pretty well. Suspects included the father, the dad’s girlfriend, and Portia’s boyfriend, an heir to dukedom. His family was rather ‘crusty’ as Booth would say, didn’t you think? Obviously Booth finds them annoying and tries to annoy them more. I like that. Turns out the duke has a few dirty secrets, and I found it annoying when at the end, no one really knew for sure exactly what happened. One thing I know was not cool. Portia was preggers with the baby of the son of her father? Yikes….
The Squints:
Clark…sigh…so not King of the Lab material…

Angela is concerned that her husband (the glorious Birimbau) has arrived and isn’t so quick with the old divorce. I thought she jumped on him pretty quickly, hmmm? And then she was like, I want that divorce…Angela, your mouth was contradicting…well, your mouth….

Hodgins was trying to figure out how to figure things out with Angela. I thought it was cool when he ‘fought’ for Angela, and I felt sorry for him when he was thrown in the garbage truck. Ouch…

Cam…I thought Cam was kind of ridiculous the entire episode. She was obviously smitten with Birimbau, which was okay, I guess, but…on the case….Hodgins tells her that they found Australian coral, and she asks if the girl was killed in Australia. Uh, yeah, Cam. She was killed in Australia, even though she lived in England, and then…her body was pulled (maybe by the cast of Finding Nemo) to England, in her own car, where it sank to the bottom of the Thames. Come on, Cam…

Sweets: I can’t quite get a read on him. I feel like he is very good at his job. But I wish he’d stop saying that he is. What are your thoughts…and I’m also not sure how exactly he fits in the team yet. Has the whole team been assigned to his psychiatric care?

B+B:
I found the beginning fascinating, when Brennan mentioned Zack. She was feeling sorry, and Booth was very cynical. Although, I never would have guessed it, it’s possible that Brennan would be able to forgive Zack easier than Booth. Hmmm….hmmm.

I LOVED when Booth was trying to maneuver out of the parallel parking spot, and keeps going on about how he’s not agitated, etc? Ha! Of course Brennan picks that moment to have a total heart to heart?! I laughed the whole time. I like their friendshippy stuff. And at the end, I liked that Brennan turned down Wex for Booth. I’m still confused by the last B+B scene though…why does Booth say “I’m just here to help you find a guy”? Did I miss something earlier in the episode?
And…after hearing Booth say he wanted to see the bridge open because it would be lucky, and then see him miss it, while bickering with Brennan about luck, well…I found that heartbreaking.

Favorite lines of the 1st half:
1. Brennan: I will take your romantic advice under advisement.
2. Sweets: You’re the gay neighbor boy. Your love is the party wagon.

Case #2: Dr. Ian Wexler
Dr. Wexler is found dead in his charred flat. Brennan and Booth suspect foul play. They interrogate several people, including students Cyril and Vera. I actually liked this case as well. I liked that it turned out Ian was a (relatively) good man.

The Squints:
Clark: Adios…and can I say, I feel that whole story line was a little memo to the fans from the Bones writers. They’ve been about the relationships for awhile, and for Clark to leave, saying he was to science-y, and that the lab was too dramatic (and Brennan’s earlier comment about the dangers of pure logic)…well, I think that is saying something about the direction of the show.

Hodgins: Funny (small, angry man). He was good in this episode.

Angela: I thought she was a bit ridiculous at the end. I mean, first of all, she did kiss GB, and she gave Hodgins an enormous speech about not fighting for her and her being the only one who was allowed to give her heart, so…then at the end, she wanted him to chase after her? Not buying it. And for the record…did they have to break up in the diner? NO! The diner should only be used for good. Boo that.

Cam: ”Earth shattering sex”? Ey yo! Ha. I actually didn’t mind that part, but her waffling all throughout the rest of the episode? Annoying.

Sweets: Ah…see above…

B+B:
More good friendship stuff. Loved all the “Sir Seeley Booth” stuff, for sure, and Brennan was back to her rational self while trying to solve the case. They do make a good team. Pritch was a little forward toward Booth at the end. Then again, she’s not an idiot, and he’s so an Everest. I liked the ‘knighting’, and DB’s little eye roll as he watched the knife was cute. Also his suit was funny. Brennan was cool at the end as well.

Favorite lines of the 2nd half:

1. Booth: “Sir Seeley Booth…that just sounds right…”
2. Brennan’s voicemail: “Technically you have not reached Temperance Brennan. But if you leave a message, it will reach her. Me. Temperance Brennan”

Next week’s episode is going to be so fly! Did you see the previews? Ah haha! See you then!

Seeleybaby is GMMR’s resident BONES expert. She’ll be following the show all season for us, and we couldn’t be more excited to have Booth and Brennan (ok especially Booth) well covered this year!

to clarify…I thought Brennan was quicker to forgive Zack than Booth would be to forgive him, not that Bren was quicker to forgive Zack than she was to forgive Booth…if that makes sense…

oh, and another fave line i forgot about?

Roger Frampton worked for the NHL? HA!

I thought it was a great episode, but so much went on I felt like I missed a lot of it. I did love all of the B/B interactions, and I realized how much I missed this show over the summer! I agree that the Angela thing didn’t make a whole lot of sense, and I really feel like something is missing without Zack. I hope they bring him back in some capacity.

Seeleybaby – you didn’t miss anything before that last B+B interaction in Part 1. I’ve been thinking about his comment too, and the best I can come up with is that it was partly a dig at her complete inability to find a guy who isn’t completely insane, and partly a hint at his own bitterness/sadness about feeling like he’s never going to be the guy for her. There was something about how that line was read that screamed “I wish I could tell you how I feel” to me.

Or maybe I’m just reading more into it than was actually there.

Enjoyed the episode…even if Booth’s culture clash problem crossed the line from funny into cringe-worthy for me.

Great Sweets line about the party wagon! He really stealing scenes the whole night. I loved it when he came in and saw Birimbau and just starting giggled, saying ‘Poor Hodgins!” So good.

I was confused by Brennan’s reaction to Pritch’s ‘Everest’ speech. Did she not get it? Did she get it and was perhaps just logically thinking about it from a purely sexual standpoint? After all, Ian was Everest and Brennan saw the logic in sleeping with him….and Pritch was saying the Booth is also Everest, so perhaps Brennan was weighing the pros and cons of that one? I don’t know, and it bothers me.

And I loved Hodgie apologizing for being ‘cranky’.

But, yeah, Cam? A little too flaky for my tastes in this episode. And I DO like Cam normally.

I hope we’ll be seeing Pritch again!
