David Cook – ‘Eleanor Rigby’ (Watch)

March 11, 2008 by

My favorite performance of last night from the guys was David Cook’s take on the classic ‘Eleanor Rigby’. I thought his interpretation of the song was incredible, and the vocals near the end affirmed why David is in this competition.

Amazing needs to sing a Aerosmith song!!!

I don’t usually watch Idol myself but my wife’s a fan; came into the room after doing some work and caught this song. I have to agree — this guy did an amazing rendition of the song. I actually had to download this one. Hope he eventually does a recording in a studio for it.

  4. Hmmm... on March 12th, 2008 2:55 am

Well I have to say I 100% disagree about the “genius” of his arrangement because it’s NOT original!! My friend’s band Doxology has been doing this EXACT version of Eleanor Rigby for awhile now (Their first live performance of it was on July 15th, 2006). Check it out on iTunes or YouTube because Doxology’s front man, Luke, has way better vocals and he created this arrangement. Search Artist: Doxology; Song: Eleanor Rigby; Album: Demonstration.

  5. yeah ok on March 12th, 2008 4:11 am

    Yeah ok,

Not even CLOSE to the same arrangement and not even CLOSE to better vocals. Get your ears checked buddy.

  6. really?? on March 12th, 2008 11:56 am

about that band doxology, first off, guy needs to learn some basics like breath control and changing registers QUICKLY enough to where you could later accuse him of “singing”. second the guitarist missed the lead notes and played chords instead so it doesn’t even sound like the song (in the chorus, see also: anyone else who has done that song, ever). third the guy walks around stage either stoned, or pretending to be on heroin so he can looked ‘cool’ like everyone else who does that act whilst playing music, but just looks like he can’t handle the pressure of smiling and dancing while the guitarist does the solo… and the comment above is right it isn’t the same arrangement OR a better voice. Thanks for wasting 48 seconds of my life (plus all the time I will spend thinking about how bad that actually was, plus the time I spend making fun of them…) next time you post something questioning the validity or originality of something done on idol, or anything for that matter, get your facts straight. I didn’t particularly like David Cook’s performance, UNTIL JUST NOW. Thanks for making me appreciate a perfomance I wouldn’t have otherwise “loved”, so much more than I ever could before your friends band.

Doxology, are you kidding me? I You-Tubed that and couldn’t get through one minute. They stink.

Sorry. Just getting caught up with the comments right now. Moving forward let’s stick to commentary about DAVID COOK’S appearance. Commenter #4 was just trying to drum up traffic to his band’s site. Let’s not encourage this discussion any further. Thanks.

Total copycat of the version done by Doxology. Plus, this dude cant sing. Half of it was off key. Dont take credit for something you didnt create. Doxology would blow any of these people out of the water.

I think David Cook did a great job doing Doxology’s arrangement of elenor rigby. He’s not a bad singer. In reality it seems very difficult to me to believe that David Cook could come up with a version soooooo close to doxology’s by just listening to the original chamber orchestra arrangement. He has the same piano line in the intro, same bass line and same orchestra in the second verse and chorus. Would someone explain to me how that is an accident?

  11. Jane on March 12th, 2008 7:08 pm

I think he did an great job. I have to say that I recognized the arrangement from the band Thrice who does an excellent cover of the song. Regardless of who did the arrangement first, I thought it was good!

even though the sound quality from the doxology video at youtube was awful, it’s pretty clear that doxology’s singer can’t compare to david cooks vocals. and btw, the band is either high on sniffing glue or just really awkward and pathetic while performing on stage.

i doubt that david cook chose that song and then searched the web for a “edgy” arrangement of it. and even if he did, atleast he did the song justice.

  14. JOHN on March 12th, 2008 10:18 pm

FIRST OFF HMMM,, I DONT EVEN SEE HOW U CAN SAY THAT THAT GUY HAD BETTER VOCALS THAN DAVID COOK, LIKE YEA OK STATS, GET UR EARS CHECKED. THE ONLY SIMILARITY IS THAT THEY ARE BOTH ROCK VERSION. I THINK THE FRONT MAN IN THAT BAND SOUNDS HORRIBLE AND THATS PROBABLY WHY THEY ARENT FAMOUS. U MUST BE IMPARTIAL TO THAT GROUP BC THAT IS THE ONLY WAY THAT U CAN SAY HE HAS BETTER VOCALS.. DONT BE A HATER..GIVE CREDIT WHEN CREDIT IS DUE… GREAT JOB DAVID!!!! WE ARE ALL BEHIND YOU

Ok guys, seriously, enough with the comments about this other band. I’ve asked politely, but this is the last time I’m asking before I shut down the comments. Please keep criticism to David Cook’s performance.

A cover band mad cuz a cover band covered their cover?

  17. Amanda on March 13th, 2008 3:40 am

I love David Cook…he rocked a song I love! It doesn’t matter whose arrangement it was, he did it justice! His little smirk is totally cute as well!!!

  18. Hump D. Dumpy on March 13th, 2008 9:45 am

Screecher. Yelling is not singing. Except in speed metal.

  19. Derby on March 13th, 2008 10:37 am

David not only rocked the song Eleanor Rigby, but the Idol band was great as well! The performance by David and the Idol band was way better than any of the other ‘rocker wanna be’s’ versions out there. Better rifts, better drums, just better all around. It totally gives a current sound to my favorite Beattles standard. I’d put them up against any known band, and David wins best in show, everytime

As a former classmate at CMSU and attendee to several of David’s performances when he was with the group Axium, I can tell you he could have done MUCH better. It was awesome, nonetheless. But I don’t think he’s ever had quite the audience in front of him as he did this last Tuesday night, so you can understand his nervousness in the beginning. I would expect next week will be a whole new deminsion of Davidness and he will be bringing his “A” game from beginning to end because now he’ll have his confidence with him. Regardless, I would say he was one of the top 3 performers that night. Simon was right, if it were based on talent and not popularity, David could win the whole thing. I also must give some props to Chickeze for his insane transformation from last week to this week – and I’m sure Dave would agree.

If you want to know David’s TRUE capability and power as a vocalist, I’d suggest getting on Limewire or something and searching for his band Axium…. you will be amazed. Most of their lyrics to their songs were a bit elongated and story telling, even boring at times because there aren’t many chorus’ within them and hard to memorize, but you can definitely get an idea of his insane vocal range.

  21. Tim on March 13th, 2008 10:13 pm

I’d say this could have been ripped off… not by Doxology, but by Thrice. They have a very similar sounding cover of Eleanor Rigby from and 2005 album.

  22. Suz on March 13th, 2008 11:10 pm

Ok. enough about this Seattle band. They could be a great band… I don’t really care. The point of the comment was that David ‘stole’ the arrangement. Ok…. so did David A ‘steal’ his arrangement from Stevie Wonder? This is a show about performing. When did David come out and say “hey everyone, this is MY version…. I made it up all by my little lonesome” Can’t say I heard that. So enough about him ‘stealing’ some local band’s arrangement. I’m more concerned with the fact that the world is apparently tone deaf…. what the heck is Amanda O, the one trick (and a terrible trick at that) pony still doing on the show?

I grew up on the Beatles music and remember all the albums and all the songs. I am glad that as a woman in my 50’s to proudly say that I was crying at the end of David’s beautiful rendetion of Eleanor Rigby. It made me joyously happy to know that the Beatles to this day live some way in each one of us and especially in David Cook.

I can’t wait to hear more.

  24. AwesomeCross98 on March 16th, 2008 10:09 am

Good performance. It sounds like Godhead’s version of the song – Thrice’s has a falsetto in the chorus that isn’t present here. Also, Thrice’s version has more screaming and is more guitar-centric. Anyway, this dude has some talent – I wonder if he can rock out like that with a guitar in his hands?

  25. impartial on March 16th, 2008 5:55 pm

David’s vocals were great. I’m still undecided as to whether he actually ‘stole’ the version. There seems to be limited ways to perform the song in a rock format. Perhaps that’s why everyone is saying ‘he stole it from …’ or ‘they stole it from…’

Plus, it is a cover. Technically there is only one band who didn’t steal it and they haven’t recorded anything in quite a while.

  26. extatic friend on March 17th, 2008 8:42 am

he’s only going to get better with more and more comfort on the stage. can’t wait to see what else he has in store this season and I am enjoying watching America fall in love with a guy that his friends have loved all along… way to rock Dave! Tulsa and your fans here are rooting for you!

  27. drummersgirl on March 17th, 2008 2:11 pm

David DID steal the arrangement folks. This is not a question of who wrote the song, who it belongs to, or who’s the better vocalist. If Luke was insecure about his vocals, he would go on American Idol and try to win everyone’s approval. Although, it’s quite uncanny how David’s singing style becomes so similar to Luke’s in his rendition. It is a question of a stolen ARRANGEMENT OF the original. Those who don’t know what an arrangement is have no business even commenting on whether or not it was stolen to begin with.

I can end the debate as to whether David arrangement was inspired by Doxology by telling all of you to go to iTunes and download David studio version, not the live tuesday night version but the studio version. Then download Doxology’s 2006 recording. You will hear the Idol band play the same opening guitar riff, the same erie keyboard in the back ground and the same guitar tone when you get to the “all the lonely people section”. Sure, David sounds bigger but that is because he has $70million in studio equip. recording it and world class players with world class instruments playing it. They are playing the same notes. Thrice doesn’t play the same notes, Godhead doesn’t play the same notes. David’s and Doxology’s are the same note for note. If you can’t hear that you are either tone deaf or just too in love with David to believe it is true, which is okay, David is pretty amazing but he did use Doxology’s sound to do his thing.

Doxology, Thrice, The Violent Burning…All these bands covered Elenor Rigby and arranged the song very much alike. Who’s to say that Thrice didn’t hear the Violent Burning and copied their style, and then Doxology heard Thrice’s version of the song and copied their style? No one can really say, can they?

I recognized the note4note arrangement – it’s the Beattles, duh!!! I have a chordbook/lyric book (a 20 yr old one) and I played Eleanor Rigby on the piano, it sounded just like it is! Beattles notes!!! David Cook just used his magical performance to bring limelight back to it! Who are these Doxology guys anyway – never heard of them till now. I love David Cook’s version!!!

[EDITED: Sorry but I refuse to allow any more links to the Doxology video. I never knew I could hate a band so quickly. I’m sure Doxology is great but the band and their fans have got to let this David Cook cover issue go. I know they are trying to get what they can of there 11.5 minutes of fame but it’s over. It was a cover of a cover of a cover. Enough already. Don’t bother posting another comment about Doxology because it will be removed. Sorry, but read the comments above…I’ve already put the warning out there. Done and done.]
