Exclusive CHUCK Scoop: Josh Schwartz vs. YOUR Questions

November 24, 2008 by

Despite the top secret intel I gathered while hanging with Chuck, Casey and Sarah last week in the deep undergrounds of the Orange Orange (more on my CHUCK set visit soon), there is only one man that holds the answers to some of your top CHUCK questions.  I had big plans of torturing CHUCK creator Josh Schwartz for answers while I was on set, but alas our paths didn’t cross.  But that didn’t stop me from tracking down Schwartz and demanding answers for some of your more pressing questions.

(I tried to go for bad ass.  Did it work?  Schwartz was more than happy to answer my questions and no torturing was required. But I could break him if I needed to…know that.)

Here are just a few answers to some of your top CHUCK (Mondays at 8pm on NBC) inquiries.

The Chuck Soundtrack

Like other Josh Schwartz shows including THE O.C. and GOSSIP GIRL, CHUCK offers up some killer music on a weekly basis.  But what are the chances that we’ll be seeing a CHUCK soundtrack in stores soon?  Not that likely, sadly. Says Schwartz, “Right now there are no plans for a CHUCK soundtrack.  I LOVE the music on the show, and spend a TON of time on it, and love that we get to mix in the old (Huey Lewis, Europe) with the new (Blitzen Trapper, Frightened Rabbit, Bon Iver) but the kinds of shows that get soundtracks these days tend to be those like… Gossip Girl (pick up OMFGG in stores now! Kidding…)” – [or not, buy “OMFGG” right now here or download it from iTunes.]

Chuck, Ellie

We all want a big sister like Ellie Bartowski, but we also want Ellie to have a life of her own.  With fans clamoring for Ellie to have a life outside of worrying about her little brother Chuck, I asked Josh what was up with Ellie and what was in store for her in upcoming episodes.

“Ellie and Chuck’s relationship is the glue of the show, the emotional core, the thing that keeps Chuck’s world believable and grounded. She worries for him, not as a spy or a Nerd Herd employee, but as a human being.  That said, yes she’ll be getting some fun different stuff – starting in 2 weeks with the arrivals of the Awesomes, the escalation of pre-wedding anxiety to Awesome, and a new storyline you will get a taste of by the end of Chuck vs The Sensei.”

Chuck guest stars

CHUCK has featured some killer guest stars that have fit seamlessly into the show.  Familiar faces just this season have included John Laroquette, Melinda Clarke, Michael Clarke Duncan, Nicole Richie and Michael Strahan – and that’s just to name a few.  So who is Schwartz dying to see pop up at the Buy More or perhaps as a future nemesis of The Intersect?

“Van Damme!  Seagal!  We’ve been very lucky this year.  We have some new fun names coming up as well. And at some point it feels like Adam Brody needs to make an appearance.”

Um, Adam Brody – YES!  Just so we have it on the record, I pitched it to Schwartz that nothing would be sweeter than a Bromance triangle with Chuck, Morgan and Adam Brody. Can you imagine?

Chuck Buy More

Chuck Bartowksi lives a complicated life.  Unlike Ellie, we all know why Chuck is still at the Buy More after all these years.  But in terms of keeping up appearances in his non-spy life, I asked Josh how the writers are planning on keeping Chuck at the Buy More, especially now given that he has his faux-Standord “degree”?

“Chuck’s cover is at the Buy More”, say Schwartz.  “Castle has now been built underground at the Orange Orange (and the way the two are connected will reveal itself more in upcoming episodes).   Some have learned about Charles Carmichael (those in the CIA) but believe Chuck is just an analyst.  For the most part his cover is completely secret, and certainly the fact that he’s the Intersect is completely unknown, so Buy More is the safest place to keep him where he doesn’t lose his cover.  That said, Chuck hasn’t fully decided what he wants to do with his life – if he wasn’t a spy or didn’t work for the Buy More.  Issues we will begin to tee up for… Season 3 (knocks on wood, crosses fingers and toes, does rain dance).”

I think CHUCK fans are right there with Josh in knocking the wood, crossing of limbs and doing dances in the rain. Seems like there are a lot more stories to tell and I know we’ll be right there every week getting caught up in the world of Chuck Bartowski.

Thanks Josh for taking the time to answer our questions.  Now get back to work on getting Adam Brody on board!!

Don’t forget to check out a brand new episode of CHUCK tonight at 8pm on NBC. And keep checking back with GMMR for more on my visit to the set of CHUCK!

Adam Brody… that would be, for lack of a better word, awesome!

In the immortal words of Devon Woodcomb, AWESOME! Loved that you got some scoop on Ellie; I’d like to see her more often.

It sux that there isn’t a plan for a Chuck soundtrack. It would be awesome. Thanks for the scoop. I didn’t realize the Awesomes would be coming to town.

If we have more questions for Josh Schwartz can we leave them here? I really want to know if Anna is ever going to become a spy. Casey saw something in her.

That sounds really great! If I may, some other guest star suggestions:-

Anyone from ‘Firefly’. Jewel Staite might be at liberty soon :-).
    Mark Sheppard
    His dad, W Morgan Sheppard
    Dean Stockwell
    David Tennant
    John Barrowman
Malcolm McDowell [when he’s not busy doing ‘Heroes’]
Someone who can play a British ‘Bond’ MI5 spy. Could be one of the gents I’ve mentioned!
    Lisa Ryder
Andee Frizzell [Wraith Queen and given to saying ‘awesome!’ regularly!]
    Jason Momoa
    Torri Higginson

I’m hoping we’ll get to see more situations that stretch the main cast. And test the characters they play. Can Casey be vulnerable and find his feminine side? Can Sarah be a completely professional and ice-cold CIA agent in order to get the job done? Can Chuck handle a gun? More undercover missions, please!

Oooh, Adam Brody would be spectacular!

I’m hoping that with no new Gossip Girl, Chuck will get more viewers. Have the Schwartz fans see-saw over to NBC for a bit to check it out. I’m glad that we know we have a full season this year but I definitely want a 3rd season (and many more) of this show. It’s one of the few shows that is just a delight to watch the entire way through. No frustrations (well, romantic entanglement frustrations, but in a good way) over what is going on and what is going wrong because nothing is going wrong. It keeps getting better and better!

Adam Brody would be great to see on Chuck!

Great interview, thanks for hunting him down to get the scoop.
