FRINGE: Blair Brown on Nina Being the Keeper of Information, Reaching Episode 100, and More

December 20, 2012 by

Over the past five seasons of FRINGE, Nina Sharp often was the woman who had the answers the Fringe team needed. Alas, since she’s been mainly MIA this season (her only in-the-flesh presence was in “Five-Twenty-Ten”), much of the wisdom she could be bestowing upon our recently-unambered Fringe team about the 2036 world has been left unsaid.

The good news? Nina is back in the mix with this Friday’s brand new episode, “Anomaly XB-6783746.”

I spoke with Blair Brown (Nina) at the FRINGE 100th episode/series finale event about Nina being the keeper of information, why she can’t really tease what’s to come, and reaching the “slightly miraculous” milestone of 100 episodes…

Think you were surprised by the final moments of FRINGE’s “A Better Human Being” when a second Nina Sharp finally made her way to our television screens? You weren’t alone!

“It was really a nice surprise, because I didn’t know about it until I got the script and went, ‘A ha!'” Blair Brown (Nina) laughed. “The way we work is the writers always have something in mind, and it’s always more fun to just wait and see what shows up…It was a great thrill [to get the script for “A Better Human Being”]. It was like ‘All right! Here we go!'”

When it was recently revealed that William Bell’s will left Walter in control of Massive Dynamic, were you a little surprised?

After all, while Walter was Bell’s former partner, Nina was by his side for years, long after Walter was locked away. It would have made sense for her to be the one in charge with Bell now gone, no?

When I caught up with Blair Brown (Nina) on the Vancouver set, we chatted about what Walter’s new power means for Nina, why we haven’t seen alt-Nina yet, and more…

Though LIMITLESS started off with a Bradley Cooper-led film (and Cooper’s character, Edward Mora will appear on the show, occasionally), the television series will explore the story of a different character: Jake McDorman’s Brian Finch.

And at Comic-Con, the producers of LIMITLESS didn’t shy away from the CBS drama’s potential comparison to the other, more traditional, superhero shows on television right now.

“It’s a very grounded way to do a superhero show,” executive producer Heather Kadin acknowledged in the video below.

“There’s no question you could say it’s similar to superhero shows, or you could say it is a superhero show,” Craig Sweeny added. “There is a genre MacGuffin as part of the show…and we’ll touch on those tropes…I think we’re essentially doing an origin story.”

Check out what else Sweeny, Kadin, and pilot director/executive producer Marc Webb had to say about the new show, including expanding the roles of McDorman’s on-screen parents (played fabulously in the pilot by Ron Rifkin and Blair Brown), and how the show is tackling drug use…
