FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS Series Finale Preview: ‘Always’

Well, folks, this is it.

If you’ve been lucky enough to follow the journey of FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS for the past five years, there is just one final hour to go, and it airs this evening at 8 p.m. on NBC.

I won’t say much about what goes down because I know that there are so many people who haven’t yet seen the series and I don’t want to spoil one single second of this spectacular piece of television… which I strongly urge them to Netflix as soon as possible. Start from season 1, sit back and enjoy.

But for those who are eagerly anticipating FNL’s swan song this evening, a quick preview and a Tim & Tyra clip from tonight too…

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS’ Matt Lauria Talks Season 5, CHICAGO CODE

Comments Off on FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS’ Matt Lauria Talks Season 5, CHICAGO CODE

It’s been a year since FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS filmed its fifth and final season, and several months since the finale first aired on DirecTV. But for many fans who don’t subscribe to the cable service, the swan song season of FNL starts this Friday when it debuts at 8 p.m. on NBC.

To honor its network TV premiere, we got in touch with Matt Lauria — aka Lions QB Luke Cafferty — to chat a bit about what fans can expect…

So, at the end of season 4, the East Dillon Lions nabbed a much-needed win, beating the Dillon Panthers — which was a pretty big deal. As season 5 opens, where do the Lions find themselves?
Matt Lauria: Well, we’re still the underdogs, but what you will begin to see is a real turning of the page in terms of camaraderie, the team dynamic and especially the community, too, coming together in this massive support of the Lions — you begin to see the bigger social and cultural impact that the team — and what Coach is doing — is accomplishing.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS’ Finale Debuts on DirecTV Tonight

February 9, 2011 by
Filed under #1 featured, Friday Night Lights

The series finale of one of the finest shows in television history will air tonight… and, strangely, most TV fans will be totally unaware.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, TV’s little engine that could, struggled through five seasons of less-than-stellar ratings, all the while producing one fantastic episode of television after another.

For those who discovered FNL on NBC, where it first began back in 2006, I don’t have to detail the merits of the program. To watch FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS — a show about family, marriage, small town life and everyday fumbles — is to fall in love with it. Unfortunately, few people were fortunate enough to ever find it.

Why?

Who knows. It was never embraced by a large audience. A TV mystery, which I don’t know how to explain. And yet, NBC — a network that was itself struggling throughout FNL’s run — recognized the creative gem they had on their hands and partnered with DirecTV, a cable entity which agreed to shoulder the costs of the show in return for the episodes airing on their network first.

Tonight’s series finale will run on DirecTV. NBC won’t premiere the final season until later this year. So, those of us who don’t have DirecTV, can put off our official goodbyes.

But because FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS is just that good, and never did get the recognition it deserved, we at GIVE ME MY REMOTE do feel the need to give it a shout out today.

This final season has been just as spectacular as each one that came before it. Even with regular characters gone, the writers have managed to make every hour entertaining while maintaining FNL’s creative integrity.

And because it’s Christmastime in Dillon, Texas during this finale, many of the familiar faces that have been MIA for a bit will be back, which is a beautiful thing for longtime fans.

For those who have been watching on DirecTV, the Taylors will face a few decisions tonight that could change their lives dramatically. How will this couple, which is arguably the most realistic and loving marital team ever portrayed on the small screen, deal with what’s in front of them? With passion and grace and, of course, clear eyes, full hearts.

I would post a clip, but I don’t want to spoil anything for those who are waiting to watch the whole season on NBC this spring.

I will just say to them, it’s worth the wait. And to those who will watch tonight, savor every last second, this is sacred TV!

OFF THE MAP with FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS’ Zach Gilford Premieres Tonight

Comments Off on OFF THE MAP with FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS’ Zach Gilford Premieres Tonight

Okay, so, Zach Gilford (aka Matt Saracen on FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS) is just one of the fine actors in this ensemble cast which was put together by executive producers Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers and Jenna Bans (GREY’S ANATOMY, PRIVATE PRACTICE), but he’s the reason I’ll be giving OFF THE MAP a shot.

However, if you’re a fan of Shonda or GREY’S or PP — and I know many of you are — you should definitely peep the series premiere of OTM this evening.

It’s a medical drama in a “Doctors Without Borders” type setting and it debuts at 10/9 central.

Take an early look…

Will you watch?

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: The Final Season Debuts Tonight

Talk about a series that makes me proud to be in the business of writing about TV…

The final season of FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS — a show I’ve been in love with since, well, probably its second or third episode if I’m being honest — debuts tonight on DirecTV.

I’m pleased to say that fans will not be disappointed with these last hours of a show that may have hobbled through its five year run from a ratings standpoint, but scored consistently high marks with its writing, acting and overall heart — well, you know, except for that whole Landry-murder misstep way back when, but they recovered quickly!

Take a quick look at a preview for tonight’s premiere…

If you don’t have DirecTV, don’t fret… the episodes will of course air on NBC next year.

Clear Eyes, Full Hearts…Don’t Miss It – FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS Premieres on ABC Family

When people find out that I’m the Editor of a TV blog, I’m inevitability asked to rattle off my list of the best shows on TV. It’s a tough question to answer given that I don’t watch every show on every network. But once I get that caveat out of the way, I emphatically recommend FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS. Despite a lot of incredible series in contention, FNL is my personal favorite.

This is old news to long time readers of GIVE ME MY REMOTE and listeners of The TV Talk Podcast. For years I’ve been encouraging all of you to tune in, buy the DVDs, and do whatever it takes to get involved in this incredible show. I’ve heard from many of you who have heeded my advice and, as such, can now count FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS as one of your favorite series too.

However, if you are a person who has heard the effusive praise, but hasn’t yet had the chance to tune in to this amazing television show, it is not too late. In fact, you’re just in time.

Starting Tuesday, September 6th, ABC Family will be airing FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS from the very beginning and in order, every weeknight at 6 p.m. EST. Yes, that’s five nights a week that you get to spend time with the people of Dillon, Texas.

As someone who has seen every episode, I can tell you that my DVR is set. I’m so excited to relive the series through this second run.

I implore you to join me, especially if you’ve never seen FNL. I have yet to meet anyone that gave the show a fair shot and didn’t end up loving it. It’s that good!

Clear Eyes. Full Hearts. Can’t Lose.

Planning on watching FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS for the first time on ABC Family? Drop us a line and let us know.  Already a fan but watching again from the beginning?  Chime in too. Maybe you can help me convince those of the fence, just what extraordinary TV they might be missing out on.

After years of getting shut out of the “major” Emmy categories, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS finally scored nominations for its lead actors Connie Britton and Kyle Chandler — and no one could be happier about that than their costars Derek Phillips (Billy) and Stacey Oristano (Mindy).

Take a look at the video below to get Phillips and Oristano’s thoughts on the nominations, plus their teases for what’s to come in FNL’s final (sob) season…

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: In The Bag

The post-Saracen era began this week on FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, as the focus returned to Coach Taylor’s challenge to build a new team.  Many of East Dillon’s players grew up without father figures, including Lions quarterback Vince Howard.  Beyond the lessons of X’s and O’s, these young men have built walls of distrust that their coach must tear down.

More on Eric Taylor’s confrontation with Vince later, with a clip that captures the sharp writing and fearless acting that serves as the foundation of this series…

Fatherhood was the epicenter of this episode, as we watched the daunting responsibility of raising children bring out the best & worst in the men of Dillon, Texas.  A few weeks ago, I theorized that finding the heroes of FNL was as easy as following the traditions of respect and good manners.  It is no surprise that discerning good Dads from bad Dads may also be done by separating truth from fiction.

Tim Riggins knows what poor parenting looks like.  His Dad left Dillon for a life of honky tonk bars and golf course hustles long ago, and Tim is not willing to see Becky suffer with false expectations like he and Billy did.  All season, casual viewers could have easily perceived Tim & Becky’s storyline to be one of mutual attraction or romantic inevitability.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: Stay

First crushes are sweet. They write silly notes in your yearbook about how corny your jokes are, not realizing it took three days for you to work up the courage to ask for their penmanship. First kisses are important for answering trivia questions down the road. Twelve years old, just before the lunch bell rang, behind the school sign. First loves, however, occupy a category all to themselves.

First loves allow you to see yourself through the kindness of their eyes, plan the loftiest of futures without hesitation or cynicism, and cry the heaviest tears you will ever shed. They are a refuge from the storms of teenage melodrama and family discord. When your future is wide open, uncompromised by tough struggles and bad experiences, it is easy to believe that your heart can and will always belong to that unique person.

This week’s Friday Night Lights showcased two young couples struggling to answer a fundamental question. How do you say goodbye to the first person, outside of your immediate family, who loved you unconditionally? The words are too painful to say out loud. Taking the first steps in a new direction feels like a path to ruin. Sometimes, the only way to let go is to close your eyes and put your foot on the gas.
