Today’s a pretty big day for a show that’s been on summer hiatus for a month and won’t be back for more than three months.

How the heck can they possibly resolve this in the fall? Flashbacks? Lots of talking head comentary filling in the blanks? Screw the real-time approach? Maybe Pam fell and hit her head while playing flonkerton and it was all a dream and Jim never told her he loved her, Roy never set a date and Angela never gave Dwight a cookie.

I’ve really got to find a hobby or something. This is driving me crazy. I even rented a tux for today.

I was watching the season finale AGAIN on Thursday night (had to have my Thursday office fix) and my hubby said that it is all going to be a dream. I hope that it isn’t. I am all for real time with talking heads. Or even if it picks up after Jim’s trip down under. I would hate for the show that has so many loyal viewers to take the Newhart route.

Watching the show for 2 seasons I can tell you that the writers are much much better then just tossing it all away on a dream. If the writers didn’t want the kiss to happen then it wouldn’t have, there is no reason to have this become a dream. Im thinking the first 3rd season show will start off not saying anything at all about it, having a funny segment in the begining and through out the course of the show fill in the blanks.

I agree w/ Josh. The Office is filmed like a documentary so there is no way they’re going to make it a dream. It’s supposed to be real to life, not like a soap opera w/ dream sequences. The writers will pull through for sure, no doubt in my mind. About being filmed in real time, i don’t know. They may fill in the blanks throughout the third season or they may just skip the real time deal. The show may have been filmed in real time or may not have been b/c any show on tv usually does a halloween or Christmas show so i don’t know.

  5. suzette on June 10th, 2006 4:53 pm

Maybe the documentary crew took the summer off and casino night was the last day they filmed the office staff. Maybe the season premiere will be the crews forst day back. Maybe, maybe, maybe…

I agree the writers are no dummies. I think it’s also worth stating the obvious: this is a comedy, not a soap opera. However they resolve this, it’s not going to be like “A very special Everwood” or something.

I really think there isn’t going to be any kind of fairy-tale, happy ending. Maybe this is a jaded guy’s perspective talking, but I’ve watched the reruns and JAM videos ad nauseum, and I really think Jim is way hotter for Pam than Pam is for Jim. Her feelings amount to a secret crush. He’s full-bore obsessed. He’s got nothing else, while she’s got a history with Roy that the viewers know little about and which probably explains how she ended up engaged to him in the first place.

To put it short, I think Pam may or may not marry Roy, but no way she ends up with Jim.

Disagree? Then set me straight, because I’d rather believe otherwise.

Brian makes an excellent point. It’s true: Pam clearly isn’t as in love w/ Jim as Jim is w/ her. Whenever you see Jim talking about Pam, you can see that longing, but when Pam talks about Jim, there just isn’t as much need. Brian is right when he says that her feelings are more like a secret crush. Plus, she’s become too complacent in her relationship w/ Roy. They do have a lot of history and it’s tough for her to just take a risk on Jim. However, i’m an optimist, and i think the writers will know what to do when it comes to Pam and Jim. They won’t screw this up. I still have some hope that they’ll end up together….because i’ll be pissed if they don’t ^_^;; In the end, it’s all up to Pam. Does she want to take a risk on Jim? Does she love Roy enough to marry him and share a life w/ him? Does she love Jim enough? We’ll see…

I don’t think Pam has the luxury to indulge in her feelings for Jim, whatever they may be, whereas Jim is single and can pine after Pam all he wants. To me, it is not that Pam doesn’t love him Jim (I think she does), but she doesn’t want to admit to herself how much she likes him because it would mean she would have to do something about it! Her life looks like it is set in a certain direction, and I think she is terrified of any changes. Whether the declaration Jim made will force her to face her feelings for him remains to be seen, but I do think it will actually make her reconsider whether her life is going in the right direction. She is having all these feelings for someone who is not her fiance, and her fiance does not seem very supportive of what she wants in life so I do think this will make her decide to call off the wedding.

  9. Amy on June 12th, 2006 10:10 am

Exactly, Genevieve. The thing is, until Jim actually came out and said something, I don’t think Pam knew she had any non-platonic feelings for Jim. She DID have those feelings, but she had them swept so far under the rug, she wasn’t even aware they were there. If you look at the way she looks at him and behaves around him, and if you consider that Jim smile she has, you can’t really believe she doesn’t love him. And the fact that she had to run and call her MOTHER (trust me, that’s HUGE) says that when it was all out in the open, that rug got pulled away and Pam was forced to actually feel all those things that she had been denying. And the fact that her rejection was actually a question says to me that she isn’t sure she believes what she’s saying. He tells her he’s in love with her, and she knows that she should say she can’t and she automatically thinks that she can’t, but all of a sudden she’s not so sure. And really, if there were any doubts at all in her mind, they were banished during that kiss. She may not end up with Jim right away. I strongly believe he will transfer. But I really do believe that it should be enough to make Pam wake up and take control of her life and do something to make herself happy, even if those plans don’t include Jim right away(which, eventually, they will.)

Genevieve is right and we must not forget certain Jam moments where we see Pam’s feelings.

She was clearly jealous of Katy in “Hot Girl”, so much that she tried to glam herself up by applying lip gloss then stopped when she noticed the camera on her.

Her jealousy resurfaced in “The Fire” as Jim and Katy were leaving for lunch, she kissed Roy after seeing them being all flirty. Earlier, when Katy calls Jim through her phone she is clearly annoyed and tells Jim to give Katy his extension.

In “E-mail Surveillance” she seemed pleased when Jim reveals that he hasn’t been talking to Katy.

Then in “Office Olympics” and “E-mail Surveillance” she is confronted about her feelings about Jim by Angela and Phyllis. Her reaction is of course shock because at that point she is still in denial about her feelings for him but the fact that it is obvious to her coworkers is jarring to her.

In “Christmas Party” she took his gift (the beloved teapot) over the ipod. Yes, Roy did reveal that he was going to get her one but during her talking head, she didn’t express any regret with her decision to trade with Dwight.

“Take Your Daughter to Work Day” she stared adoringly at Jim when he was bonding with Abbey, she saw him as a father figure. When she saw Roy goofing off with that problem child Jake, you could see the disappointment in her face. To her, Roy would seem more like a buddy than an actual parent.

In that same episode, Jim walks away from her as she’s talking to him since he had to leave early for his date. She is surprised and a little sad because unlike the past, he didn’t hang on her every word.

At the end of “Michael’s Birthday” she tells the camera that it was a “good day” much like Jim “Not a bady day” at the end of “Diversity Day”.

The Booze Cruise, she looked at Jim encouraginly for what it seemed like an eternity. I don’t know what person would risk their engagement for a simple crush.

“Valentine’s Day” she is clearly let down when Jim doesn’t give her a gift.

When Jim tells her about his bygone crush on her in “The Secret” you could see her face fell right before she leaves the kitchen when he reminds her that his crush was years ago and that he’s over it.

In Casino Night, she tells him “I… can’t” when he tells her that he’s in love with her instead of “I…don’t” as in she doesn’t love him back. Now, if it were only a crush I don’t think she’d call her mother to tell her what happened. Then, as we all know, she kissed him back.

I’m not really sure what the writers will do at the beginning of S3. Jenna Fisher told an interviewer that David Denman (Roy) was really shaping up physically since the wrap up of the filming of S2 (maybe we’ll find out more in his *exclusive* interview here at GMMR?). How that would impact the premier storyline for S3, who knows? But I would think it would look pretty funny if they were to pick up right where they left off and Roy had dropped a noticeable amount of weight…though they don’t always show Roy in every episode, so I suppose it could be done…hhhmmm…

We also may be told more through the webisodes which start in July, I believe. I’m guessing the writers won’t give away too much – but maybe there could be some reference to Casino Night as far as a time reference for the viewers…And I won’t even get into my spec on the missing money and who I think it is. ::coughroycough:: I’ll save that for a possible meta here later?

Regarding Pam and Jim? Well, I could go on for way too long couldn’t I? Generally, I don’t know that I agree that Jim’s way more into Pam than she to him. I don’t think Pam has had the time or opportunity to give as much thought to her feelings for Jim past friendship. For one, she has been and has always seen herself as engaged/involved with Roy since knowing Jim, right?

For two, I think the writers have written her to have horrible self-esteem. It’s shown time and time again and not just with her and Roy. How else can you account for willingness to stay with someone like Roy and put up with his crappy treatment of her? Fear of the unknown, I think, only plays a small part in that.

Her self-esteem, I think, also plays into why it’s so hard for her to see what a great guy Jim is and how it’s even possible for him to love her as he does. Even Jenna said it herself in the Joseph & Joseph podcast re the soda exchange “Hi” – Pam seems to have blinders on when it comes to Jim and what a great guy he is.

I think those blinders got a *major* jolt on Casino Night and, though I don’t believe it will come quickly or easily, she’s going to have to come to terms with Roy’s treatment of her and their relationship, her feelings for Jim and Jim’s feelings for her…

No, The Office is not a soap opera (thank goodness!) but it does have, by far, the best combination of comedy and drama to make it the best show on the planet…and, yes, I am biased.

It takes a lot for me to change my mind (not a great trait, I know) but you make a good argument Amy. Plus, I like your outcome better than mine.

I think it’s funny how guys and girls analyze this from unique perspectives. For example, I totally get lovelorn guy thing, but I had no idea that calling mom was a big deal.

I know this thread is a little stale, but I think Pam’s repulsion to a life with Roy has been growing at a faster pace than her attraction to Jim. I keep thinking about that talking head from “Boys and Girls” where she talks about having a terrace with flowers, but how there are no houses like that in Scranton. She definitely wants out of the engagement more than she wants to be WITH Jim. I think that will be the approach the writers will take. She’ll lose interest in Roy FIRST, then re-build what she has with Jim.

Amy, you hit the nail on the head! Just allow me to quote Jim and Kevin in response to Pam’s “I can’t?”

    Jim: “I think you’re bluffing.”

Kevin: “I think she’s full of it.”
