MOONLIGHT Over Dohring (Comic Con Update)

Cast of MOONLIGHT

Today was my first full day of my first Comic Con experience and it didn’t disappoint. If I weren’t so tired I would delve into details on all the panels I attended today, but I can hardly keep my eyes open so that might have to wait until tomorrow. But I couldn’t, in good faith, head to bed for the night without sharing some details from the first panel I attended today – MOONLIGHT. I have some really great pics of the cast that I’ll be posting soon, but I have to be up in four hours so I thought these pics would suffice for now.

So let’s get right to it – Jason Dohring. Need I say more? Jason Dohring, whom we all know and love loved as Logan Echolls on VERONICA MARS is returning to television in the CBS series MOONLIGHT. For those of you not familiar with the show, it’s about a private investigator who just happens to be a vampire. The pilot is being reshot right now, but if the extended promo we saw today is indicative of the show’s creative approach, then I think it’s going to be fantastic.

The Cast…
Alex O’Laughlin is Mick St. John- the oh so charming PI who struggles with his secret life as a vampire. This Patrick Demspey-esque Austrailian actor could just be the most talked about new face of the Fall season – well at least if the swooning ladies that were in the room at today’s Comic Con panel have anything to say about it.

There was some eye candy for the boys as well. Sophia Myles, an English-born actress plays Beth Turner, a reporter for an online website who may just have a secret history with Mick. Someone whose history with Mick is not so secret is Coraline, played by the beautiful Shannyn Sossamon. As it turns out, it was Coraline that turned Mick into a vampire when she gave him more of a love bite than he was expecting on their wedding night.

Brian White and Jason Dohring round out the cast. Brian, whom some of you may know from his roles on “The Shield” and “The Family Stone” plays Lieutenant Carl Davis, a cop who gets on Sophia’s good side by feeding her the leads she needs to get the story. But will Carl’s involvement with Coraline mean his days as a mortal are numbered?

Jason Dohring, Moonlight

And then of course is Jason Dohring. Jason, as you may have read here on GMMR, is the second person to play the role of Josef. In the original pilot, Josef was played by a man in his late 60’s, so we can expect that Dohring’s take will be completely fresh and new. Josef is a billionaire hedge fund trader by day and a booze lovin’ womanizing vampire by night. Having been on the Earth for over 400 years, Josef has played witness to a history that is beyond us all. I mean, how many people can be walking around the streets of Manhattan in 2007 and can claim to have been friends with Mozart back in the day? He must be a blast at cocktail parties (well you know, at least until he wants to suck your blood).

The Panel…
The excitement in the room as the cast arrived was palpable. Looking around it was obvious that quite a few VERONICA MARS fans turned out to support Jason. The room erupted when he was introduced and the first few questions from the audience were directed to Jason.

When it was my turn at the mic, I first took a moment to thank Executive Producer Joel Silver on behalf of all VERONICA MARS fans for bringing Jason Dohring back to TV so soon (the shakes from the withdrawl were just starting to kick in). I went on to ask why they thought of Jason for the role of Josef when the part was being recast. Joel Silver was simple and direct when he said that he wasn’t quite ready to let Logan Echolls out of his life (nor were we). The roles of Josef and Logan shared a lot of similar qualities, and he knew that Jason would be perfect for the part. And thank god for that.

I’ll admit that had Jason Dohring not been cast, I’m not sure MOONLIGHT would have been on my radar. But he was, and it is – and from what I’ve seen I think it should be on yours as well. Being a vampire-based show, it’s drawing obviously comparisons to “Buffy” and “Angel”, but Silver and the cast were to quick to point out that MOONLIGHT is a unique show unto itself and has its own voice and style despite the shared vampire theme.

MOONLIGHT will air this Fall on Friday nights at 9pm on CBS (which means you need to set your TiVo to record the show while you are watching FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS on NBC at 9pm).

Drop me a line and let me know if MOONLIGHT has caught your attention.

I’ll be back tomorrow with more pics from the MOONLIGHT Comic Con panel as well as pics and updates from CHUCK, REAPER, PUSHING DAISIES and more.

Although I was (okay, am) a big Buffy and Angel fan, I wouldn’t normally be drawn to a vampire show. I’ve never seen Dark Angel, for instance, or any of the others. Like you, my interest in Moonlight was piqued when they cast Jason Dohring, who was definitely the highlight of Veronica Mars for me. I think the part sounds fantastic for him, and from what you’ve said of the rest of the cast and the creative approach, I’ll definitely be checking out Moonlight this fall.

    Thanks for your reports!

This show wasn’t even on my radar until Jason became attached, and his character sounds perfect for him! I’ve always enjoyed the Vapire genre and I think this show could be good!

Jason Dohring. Joel Silver. Some other people.
JASON DOHRING. I think Logan 400 years later would be a little too emo for me, but hey, Jason Dohring on Television again is awesome. Mainly because I detest Kristen Bell.

And hey, they’re not the CW which means he can be their new network star and the show can get the accolades it deserves.

Like almost everyone said, I didn’t plan to watch this show until they cast Jason Dohring. Now not only am I watching, I’m getting all my friends to watch as well. (Oh, and that boy can suck my blood anyday!!!)

  8. Amanda on July 30th, 2007 4:28 pm

I was NOT going to watch this show until it was announced that J-Doh would be on it. And…I’m with Jenny…I detest Kristen Bell. But LOVE Mr. Dohring!

  9. Mannie on July 30th, 2007 5:24 pm

Why do you detest Kristen Bell?

I’m a huge fan of all things vampire, but it wasn’t until I heard that Jason Dohring was cast that I was excited about this show. He is my favorite person to come out of Veronica Mars and I can’t wait to see him as a vampire.

[…] Last week I told you all about the Comic-Con panel for CBS’s new show MOONLIGHT.  As I’ve said before, I wasn’t sure this one was going to be on my radar, and then they went and cast Jason Dohring which earned it a solid season pass on my TiVo.  But Jason Dohring aside, I think this is going to be a smart and sexy show and one that I think we’ll be talking a lot about on GiveMeMyRemote.com this season. (Check out my thoughts on the MOONLIGHT panel here) […]

For me it was an effor to watch Veronica Mars… Being from Argentina and having to watch the show at 3 PM on Saturdays wasn’t very easy. And after all the dissappointment of the series finale, I really, really, really can’t wait to see Jason Dohring back on TV. So let’s wish the best for this show, and hope for a good ending, in case it doesn’t last too long

Detest Kristen Bell?! My BFF?! Say it ain’t so! I love the gal and can’t wait to see her on Heroes. Booyah! That being said, YAY JD! I am so glad he’s back on my TV screen so quickly. I’ve missed my Logan. *sigh* Here’s hoping Moonlight doesn’t suck hardcore…

  14. Beth on January 2nd, 2008 2:13 pm

    LOVE! Moonlight!
Alex O’Loughlin is so totally hot and the on-screen chemistry of his character Mick with Beth is just amazine! MORE! MORE! MORE!~

  15. Lauren on May 4th, 2008 12:20 pm

To imitate Beth, I LOVE Moonlight! It is one of the only shows I loook forward to on television. Alex O’ Loughlin is my favorite actor on that show, that sexy thing! lol. But ever since I have seen the new episode, “Fated to Pretend”, where Josef “re-“turns Mick, I have had a different appreciation for him after that. And what he did for Beth in “Click” shows that he truly cares about Mick.
I am also completey psyched to hear that it’s coming back this fall! WHOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! SECOND SEASON BABY! This show is always full of surprises and I can NOT imagine what this fall will bring for us.
