HBO Max’s new take on GOSSIP GIRL will debut Thursday, July 8, HBO Max announced.

The new show “explores just how much social media — and the landscape of New York itself — has changed in the intervening years” since the original series went off the air in 2021. The new show stars Jordan Alexander, Eli Brown, Thomas Doherty, Tavi Gevinson, Emily Alyn Lind, Evan Mock, Zion Moreno, Whitney Peak and Savannah Lee Smith. (Former GOSSIP GIRL writer Josh Safran is running this new show.)

The streaming platform also released the first character portraits and a new teaser (featuring a voice over by Kristen Bell)…

GOSSIP GIRL is the latest show to get a reboot/continuation, with the former CW series getting a new life on the upcoming streaming platform HBO Max.

“[Co-creator] Stephanie [Savage] and I talked about it at points over the years,” co-creator Josh Schwartz told reporters after a TCA panel for his upcoming series LOOKING FOR ALASKA. “Obviously we’re seeing more shows get revisited. Certainly there were people on social media asking for it.”

Many GOSSIP GIRL fans were a little shocked when the series finale revealed that (spoiler alert, for those who plan to catch up on DVD some day) Dan Humphrey had been writing the revealing blog. And they weren’t the only ones.

“I did not [know],” former GOSSIP GIRL showrunner — and current SMASH boss — Josh Safran told me. “Over the years it shifted, but I think where they landed was absolutely the right place to go.”

While it might be frustrating for some people to have not known that key information while shaping the series, Safran saw it as something positive.

GOSSIP GIRL’s end is fast approaching.

The CW has officially announced that the teen drama will say goodbye with a two-hour series finale event on Monday, December 17th.

According to the network, “All will be revealed in the drama-filled series finale, featuring a look back at the unforgettable OMG moments of the series that made headlines, including interviews with the cast and creators themselves.  In addition, viewers will be treated to a sneak peek at the upcoming series THE CARRIE DIARIES, starring AnnaSophia Robb as the incomparable and iconic Carrie Bradshaw growing up in the 1980s.”
