It’s Sunday Funday time on YOU’RE THE WORST!

In the show’s first season, the “Sunday Funday” installment was a turning point for the show. The episode featured the entire ensemble together for most of the adventure, which showcased how well they all worked together.

And with a catchy song, and an easily repeatable format, the FXX comedy is taking things up a notch in season 2: it’s a Sunday Funday Halloween.

“We weren’t trying to…revisit what we’re doing, but we liked it, we had a good time with it,” YOU’RE THE WORST creator Stephen Falk explained on the show’s set. “It’s a very easy structure in which to put a show, because then the normal storylines that are happening can be put on top of it…but then we looked and saw what time of year it would be. My fiancee, who is also our head makeup person, was asking us to do a Halloween episode. The two things just clicked…Halloween episodes are dumb, but the idea of watching them go through Sunday Funday again, in costume, was too much to resist.”

When YOU’RE THE WORST kicks off its new season on FXX, Jimmy and Gretchen are adjusting, in their own way, to their recent cohabitation.

“I think both Jimmy and Gretchen go through periods of feeling good about living together, and also desperately wanting not to live together and annoying each other,” YOU’RE THE WORST star Aya Cash (Gretchen) shared. “I feel we hit about halfway through the season, [and then] we stop playing with the moving in cliches. There’s obviously some back and forth about ‘Where do I put my stuff?’ and ‘Whose schedule are we on?’ which I think is interesting, but you could do a whole season of that. And a lot of shows would. But I think [YOU’RE THE WORST creator] Stephen [Falk] and the writers have really pushed it forward, and moved into something deeper, and playing with something else…so you’re not just going to watch a whole season of, ‘Oh my God, they’re living together, here are the issues.'”

The show’s evolution was an important step for the writers — a fact the actors appreciated.

“I think it was really important for all of us not to change too much,” Chris Geere (Jimmy) acknowledged. “Stephen has this thing called ‘second seasonitis,’ [as] he calls it: you look at what worked last year and you try to recreate it. I think that’s important to avoid. And, thankfully, touch wood, we’ve all picked up from where we left last year, rather than trying to create a new show.”

One of the thing the show is leaning into? The fabulous chemistry between the whole cast.

YOU’RE THE WORST — one of the best new shows from last year — returns on Wednesday, September 9th with a new season, and with a new home on FXX.

And those aren’t the only shifts going on: Gretchen and Jimmy have reluctantly moved in together (after Gretchen’s apartment burned down), Lindsay is newly single, and Edgar…well, he’s still into Lindsay.

For fans of the smart, yet charming, comedy, there’s also a bit of good news: season 2 will consist of 13 episodes, up from season 1’s 10 installments.

I spoke with YOU’RE THE WORST creator Stephen Falk about the larger season, switching networks, allowing growth in the characters, and more… Read more

YOU’RE THE WORST: Stephen Falk and Desmin Borges on the Cut Edgar-Lindsay Kiss

For as fabulous as YOU’RE THE WORST’s first season was — and if you haven’t seen it, please remedy that ASAP: the first season is on DVD and streaming on Hulu — there was one key moment that was filmed that didn’t make it to our television screens: a Lindsay and Edgar kiss.

“The uninteresting answer is it was a really long episode, and I needed to cut something,” YOU’RE THE WORST creator Stephen Falk shared. “It wasn’t a significant kiss; it was a silly kiss.”

The moment in question was supposed to come in the episode, “Equally Dead Inside,” where Edgar and Lindsay came to the (horrifying) realization that they may be sidekicks in their friends’ lives. And after they grew tired of being stood up, the duo came up with their own plan to get back at Jimmy and Gretchen.

YOU’RE THE WORST — one of the best shows on television last year — is premiering its second season on FXX on Wednesday, September 9th. And if you haven’t had the time to check out the series, the entire first season is now streaming on Hulu. (The first three episodes are free to everyone, but in order to unlock the the last seven episodes of season 1, you have to subscribe to their service. On the bright side, you can get two weeks free.)

The show, on the surface, is about two not-always-great people who reluctantly find themselves in a relationship with each other. But really, while the show follows Jimmy and Gretchen’s blossoming relationship, it’s just as much about them finding their own way and exploring their friendships with their not-sidekicks Lindsay and Edgar, too. It’s funny, it has heart, and it is absolutely worth your time to watch.

But in case you need a little bit more convincing, I asked YOU’RE THE WORST creator Stephen Falk to share why he feels newbies should check out the comedy.

It was another great year for television, and to celebrate that, I made my list of the top shows in 2014.

As per usual, my annual disclaimer: I literally can’t watch every show, and so some shows that probably should be here (like TRANSPARENT) didn’t make the cut because I couldn’t catch up in time. (But on the bright side, I caught up on every show I name-checked last year as not being caught up on.)

So, these are my top shows of the year…

YOU’RE THE WORST and MARRIED have been renewed, FX announced. Both shows will have 13-episode second seasons (up from their first-season 10 episodes), and YOU’RE THE WORST will transition over to FXX.

“We love these shows and the creative visions of Andrew Gurland of MARRIED and Stephen Falk of YOU’RE THE WORST,” said Nick Grad, co-President of Original Programming, FX Networks and FX Productions, in a statement. “Both series have terrific ensemble casts and outstanding lead performances – Nat Faxon and Judy Greer in MARRIED, and Chris Geere and Aya Cash in YOU’RE THE WORST. These shows are honest, 360-degree looks at relationships and we’re excited to see how they evolve.”

YOU’RE THE WORST: Kether Donohue Makes a Case for Lindsay Being the Worst

Comments Off on YOU’RE THE WORST: Kether Donohue Makes a Case for Lindsay Being the Worst

While the fabulous new FX comedy YOU’RE THE WORST isn’t actually filled with truly terrible people, there’s no denying these characters occasionally do some, um, questionable things.

But that’s not a bad thing. And in fact, when I spoke with YOU’RE THE WORST’s Kether Donohue (Lindsay) on set, she made a case for why her character is truly the worst…

YOU’RE THE WORST: Stephen Falk and Desmin Borges on Edgar’s PTSD

Comments Off on YOU’RE THE WORST: Stephen Falk and Desmin Borges on Edgar’s PTSD

youre-the-worst-desYOU’RE THE WORST — a great new FX comedy you should all be watching — is a show that lives in shades of grey. The characters might not be joyful good-doers, but they’re not, in actuality, the worst. Instead, they’re unapologetically themselves…which can make things difficult for the people around them.

Likewise, YOU’RE THE WORST isn’t a straight-forward comedy: sure, it’s wickedly funny at times, but the show also isn’t afraid to embrace the fact that life can be tough. Case in point: Edgar’s PTSD, which had been mentioned in the first few episodes, but is touched on a bit more in tonight’s brand new episode, “What Normal People Do.”

I spoke with YOU’RE THE WORST creator Stephen Falk and series star Desmin Borges (Edgar) about playing out Edgar’s PTSD on-screen, the research they did, and more…

Comments Off on YOU’RE THE WORST: Aya Cash and Chris Geere on Their Not-All-Terrible Characters

While the new FX comedy, MARRIED, explores life for a couple who has been together for years, the network’s other new series, YOU’RE THE WORST, explores the very beginning of a relationship between two (occasionally terrible) people.

I went to the Los Angeles set of the wickedly funny comedy (which actually films on location in the city), and spoke with YOU’RE THE WORST stars Aya Cash (Gretchen) and Chris Geere (Jimmy) about their characters…
