What’s Your Favorite TV Show Holiday Episode?

December 18, 2007 by

Ah, the very special holiday episode. Most shows have had at least one, and more often than not they are emotional episodes that pull at our heart strings and make us feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Whether it’s Lorelai and Rory exchanging presents, Pam getting that perfect green teapot from Jim, or a big ‘ol rockin’ party at the Buy More, there’s been a lot of great holiday episodes in our TV history. But what’s your favorite?

Share with us your favorite holiday-themed TV episode!!

This is a lot tougher than it seems. So many fond memories to choose from. But here’s a glimpse at my favorite holiday episode of all time…

I was going to pick a past Christmas episode (probably Gilmore Girls 1st season with the apple tarts) BUT Supernatural has come in and swept away my heart with their most recent “A Very Supernatural Christmas” This is my favorite because they did not abandon what type of show Supernatural was to make a cheesy Christmas episode. They had monsters, and mystery, and a good ol’ fashioned torture scene. But it showed us so much about Sam and Dean’s past, and the unbreakable bond they have, and I’ll be darned if I didn’t tear up at last scene of two brothers sharing what they think will be their last Christmas together.

So that is currently my favorite Christmas episode!

I agree with the person above – “A Very Supernatural Christmas” was fantastic!!

But, I’m going to go with the Christmakkuh episodes of The OC! Such good times.. and great television – I miss it 🙁 ::moment of silence:: I want a Seth Cohen starter pack..

The 2-part Saved by the Ball Christmas episode (season 4) when Zack and the others are working at the mall where he helps out the homeless guy and dates the homeless girl – you know you like it – i watch it every year

OMG, could they have possibly picked any better music for those scenes? I was so emotional after I watched that the first time. It was probably, in addition to being an amazing Christmas episode, the most satisfying season finale of any show I have ever watched. Just … gah.

I agree with your pick! The Office Christmas Specials were completely magical. Extras just gave it a good run for it’s money though. I think the Office earns extras points for its nostalgia value.

I get emotional every time I watch that even though I haven’t seen the UK version yet. I think it’s because it’s the guy who played Arthur Dent as Tim. I have loved Arthur since I was in seventh grade (book Arthur obviously, but the crush was easily transferred to movie Arthur). So cute!

FRIENDS – The One With the Holiday Armadillo

    Pure hilarity! Aaand totally loveable.

GMMR’s pick is definitely one of my faves, but I have to go with the US version ofThe Office and “Christmas Party.” Not only was it a terrific episode, it was after that episode that I became the Office fanatic I am today!

I’m particularly partial to Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip Christmas episode that contained the Katrina musicians playing that beautiful version of O Holy Night. *sigh*

Office and Friends Christmas specials are always great. And Bones had a good one that I remember…

  12. Sarah on December 18th, 2007 9:15 pm

Definitely has to be the Festivus episode of Seinfeld. Although any of the Office Christmas episodes are close seconds.

I have 3- I can’t choose: “Christmas Party” from season 2 of The Office, “It’s a Wonderful Job” from season 3 of Moonlighting and “The Man in the Fallout Shelter” from season 1 of Bones (I actually just watched that one tonight

While I also agree with GMMR’s pick and the OC’s Chrismukkahs, I have to point out VM’s “An Echolls Family Christmas” – while it probably wasn’t Christmassy in the traditional, feel-good sense, it was such an excellent episode of the series.

  15. CrazyGringa on December 18th, 2007 10:36 pm

My three are the one GMMR picked (I watched it a couple of weekends ago for the upteenth time and still cried), The Christmas Party (The Office) and the OC’s Chrismukkah episode.

I watched the UK Office Christmas special in July or sometime so I never really thought of it as a Christmas episode and my personal favorite of that series. Tim’s TH about life not being about the big events but the little moments is one of the most profound statements I have ever heard.

I just re-watched The Office’s Benihana Christmas from last year and honestly it is my favorite. The scene with Michael being really Steve and Jim being really John on that couch laughing about the marked waitress is an absolute favorite of mine. Plus I remember screaming the word ‘rebound’ out loud in my living room the night it first aired when Jim says it. In a bleak season (from a JAM perspective), this was a very bright moment.

I want my office back, *sniff*.

i’m going a bit back, but the my so called life christmas episode is really great. ricky is homeless at the time and the chase family takes him in…very touching episode

  19. grumpyoldman on December 19th, 2007 10:26 am

Nothing beats the hearbreak of Fonzie spending Christmas Eve alone on Happy Days.

  20. Billiam on December 19th, 2007 10:38 am

Futurama had a couple excellent Christmas episodes. Here’s part of an exchange from “A Tale of Two Santas” (in which Bender is mistaken for the murderous Robot Santa and is about to be executed, and so Fry bursts in wearing a Santa suit):
Fry: “He’s not the real Santa! I am!”
Zoidberg (dressed as Jesus): “And I’m his friend Jesus!”
Mayor: “You’re not the real Santa! You’re not even a robot. And how dare you lie in front of Jesus!”

  21. Amy on December 19th, 2007 11:32 am

I have to agree with An Echolls Family Christmas. Still my favorite ever episode of Veronica Mars. The OC’s Chrismukkah episodes were always great, as are the seasonal offerings from The Office. The final Bones episode before the strike was also a great episode – just aired four weeks too early.

  22. Amy on December 19th, 2007 1:20 pm

    (This is a different Amy!)
I still like to watch The X-Files episode How the Ghosts Stole Christmas each year. I hadn’t been expecting anything great from the ep, but I totally teared up at the end when Scully admitted maybe she did want to be out there on another investigation with Mulder on Christmas Eve. And then the gift exchange at the end, shipper magic…
“Wait. Is that a hound I hear baying out on the moors?”
“No, that was a left cheek sneak.”

  23. allison on December 19th, 2007 4:06 pm

I agree with everyone who’s said “An Echolls Family Christmas” and also, of course, Chrismukkah. While the O.C. was sometimes hit or miss, Chrismukkah was always awesome.

  24. Sarah on December 19th, 2007 7:27 pm

“A Benihana Christmas.” I know it’s not the most original one, but the end scene, before the tag, where everyone is singing, and Angela is so happy, breaks me every time. She’s like the Grinch – her heart grew 3 sizes that day.
Also, thank you for posting the Office Special. I haven’t seen those in a couple of years, and I forget how good they really were. I love the part about being thrown together with the people you work with. It’s so true.

  26. hotdvdmovie on December 7th, 2009 7:40 am

    i love The Office.

  27. Ella on December 8th, 2009 10:45 pm

I totally agree with the first comment. I would have originally gone with something like Las Vegas’s xmas special “White Christmas” (s4, ep8) or Gilmore Girls’s “Forgiveness and Stuff” (s1, ep10) or Crossing Jordans’s “Blue Christmas” (s1, ep10). These are all very good episodes… but after watching “A Very Supernatural Christmas” I have found a winner. It is an amazing episode, definitely the best Christmas episode out there and maybe even one of the best tv episodes of all time!! I loved it!!
