House Recap: “Insensitive”

Ah yes, what a warm and romantic Valentine’s Day edition of House – the perfect episode to watch with your special someone. Because nothing says “I love you” like watching House pull a 25 foot tapeworm out of a teenage girl’s stomach. Just gives you those special warm fuzzies, doesn’t it? You know, the fuzzies that make you want to vomit. Yes, clearly this show is not backing away from the kind of graphic gore that I was talking about last week. I don’t know what was more disturbing: House taking forever to pull out the hugely long worm, or the fact that the teenage girl was conscious the whole time and was watching everything fairly calmly. That would be because this girl was born with that extremely rare disease where you can never feel pain. Which, of course, is exactly the type of disease that House would LOVE to have right now. But naturally, good ol’ Wilson, i.e. House’s conscience, soon squashes the man’s hopes of taking a sample of the girl’s spinal fluid and injecting it into his leg on the grounds of it being totally unethical and potentially harmful to the patient. Curses, foiled again.

Still, this patient sure afforded many memorable moments. The scene where House and the girl try to one-up each other on who has the worse deal was definitely one of my favorite House scenes ever. Sample exchange: Girl: “I can’t hold a boy too long because I might over-heat”. House: “Girls can’t hold me for too long because I only pay for an hour.” And of course, my favorite line of the night was also in this scene when, in an effort to convince the girl to stop resisting treatment and calm down, House says, “I’m sure I could say this without being condescending, but then that would give the false impression that I respect you.” Zing! No one does zingers better than House, especially when he’s being challenged.

And speaking of that, House’s manhood seemed to be strangely challenged by the discovery of Cuddy’s date, who she met at SingleBallroomDanceLovers.com. Hugh Laurie’s reaction to her date freely admitting that information was absolutely priceless. But I also loved the fact that Cuddy totally nailed House when, upon him showing up at her doorstep later that night to essentially harass her more about her date, she flat out asked, “Do you like me House?” Ohhhh, the cranky doc was pretty floored by that frank question, and seemed totally vulnerable as she inched closer to him seductively. Which again begs the question: Who is House going to end up with? Cuddy or Cameron? Cuddy’s date was totally right when he pointed out that Cuddy only really seems confident and sexy when she’s talking to House. But what about Cameron? Judging from the previews for the next episode, it looks like [SPOILERS!] House and Cameron might actually kiss!! If that’s the case, then I guess I was wrong about my prediction of it taking several more seasons for House and Cameron to hook up. [END SPOILERS]

And speaking of Cameron, what was with her suddenly becoming a callous nympho and wanting to have a “sex only” relationship with Chase because he’s the one she’s “least likely to fall in love with”? Did she make this sudden drastic change because of Foreman’s insightful speech to her about what true commitment and love really is, or was it because the actors who play Chase and Cameron recently became engaged in real life [and congratulations on that you two!!] and the writers wanted to somehow hook them up again on the show as a result? Whatever the reason, it will sure be interesting to see where they go with this new story. And also, here’s hoping that they give Chase more to do in general in the future episodes. I liked that he started to step up and take initiative this time – here’s hoping the writers will finally start developing his character more.

Final note: So I guess I was wrong, and Foreman actually was still dating that hot blond nurse. Well, WAS being the operative word here, because he broke up with her at the end of the episode. I guess, as she pointed out, he’s the kind of closed off personality who is too married to his work to want to really get close to someone and commit. And frankly, after this episode, it sure seems like ALL of the doctors at this hospital just can’t commit to a relationship. Come on, guys, it’s time to grow up – don’t make me call in Dr. Phil!

Now that you’ve obviously fixed the banner issue, I want to say that last night’s episode was one of the best ever, even with the 25 foot tapeworm bit. House is one of the few programs that is watchable from beginning to end because of the great writing and character development (and in spite of some of the visuals). And I agree with you, LaLa. They should give Chase more to do.

I just can’t see House and Cuddy together. Ewwww. Just…ew. Where did this come from, anyway? I never even thought of it, and I hope it never happens. I hope it was just some quirk, a wrinkle in the fabric of time, something. I don’t care if House ends up with Cameron at all. But Cuddy…ew. Show us another tapeworm before you show us that.

House and Cuddy wouldn’t be to bad but now that Cameron is married to Chase it can’t happen.Though House and Wilson wouldn’t be a bad couple! i’d like to see them together, they already fight like an old married couple and do care about each other so much, that House would scarifice his own life to keep amber alive cause it would make Wilson happy.

BTW i agree with Jake (up on list) that “House is one of the few programs that is watchable from beginning to end because of the great writing and character development (and in spite of some of the visuals).” House is my favorite tv show and Everyone i know has watched it and can’t think of anything bad to say about it.They all admit that even if the don’t watch it often it keeps them on the edge of their seats while they o watch it.Its such a great show…i hope House wins the Emmys this year!-luck to the whole cast and the show, but a bunch more to Hugh Laurie-!
