The Office Recap

Title: “Cocktails”
Original Airdate: Feb. 22, 2007

This was simply a wonderful night of television. For me, it started all with The Office. And hot damn it was a great episode. If we have to go the rumored six weeks before another new ep, at least we got something to ponder while we are on this mini-hiatus. But more of that in a minute.

Let’s start with the funny – the cold open.

Michael being Michael dazzled the office with his magic skills, or at least tried to. After getting completely wrapped up and shackled into a straight jacket, Mr. Scott attempted to free himself without any assistance. Soooo I’m thinking you know how that ended. The key falls from his mouth, Jim hides it and Michael ends up writing around on the floor of his office in a desperate panic. Oh Michael Scott, I’m so glad you don’t really exist in this world.

Jan and Michael, CocktailsMore of the funny takes place during a cocktail party at the home of the Dunder Mifflin CFO (those aren’t his initials, don’t get confused). Jan and Michael are officially a couple and are ready to declare themselves to all of Dunder Mifflin. Well, Michael is ready…Jan not so much. Michael manages to make a fool of himself, and of Jan, at every possible turn. Jan wasn’t pleased, and you know how she responded? By trying to get it on with Michael in the bathroom. Oh yeah, she wants him. She can’t get enough of the Michael Scott Love Machine. She’s so reluctantly smitten, she even threw the camera a “that’s what she said” tonight. Yeah she did. Something tells me that although he’s a terrible manager in the office, he might be a better manager in the bedroom. The twosome come close to breaking things off during the car ride home, but Dwight begs them not to break up (I second that by the way). These kids will make it…mark my words.

No words will be marked for Karen and Jim though. Yeah, they are keepin’ on keepin’ on, but how much longer is Jim going to fake it with her? I was a little disappointed in this storyline tonight, as NBC and all the episode descriptions talked about Jim’s meeting of Karen’s ex….yeah, never happened. But here’s what did go down. How about Karen pointing out to Jim all the Dunder Mifflin guys she had been involved with. There was the ex, Drake. The guy that she dated while he was briefly separated from his wife, and David Wallace – the CFO. The CFO admission was the deal breaker for a clearly exasperated Jimbo who throws a “What the hell? Have you dated every guy here?” her way. She hadn’t. Actually she hadn’t dated any of them. It was Karen’s attempt at a joke- a prank if you will. Jim appreciates the moment, he does, but there was something missing in his reaction. He wasn’t jealous. A normal guy might be a tad bit jealous if he thought his girlfriend had banged every guy at the party, but Jim wasn’t. He thought she was ridiculous (and yes, I’m going to get ripped for that in the comments, but that’s how I saw it). And if you don’t believe me, go back and watch the scene where she tells Jim about Drake. Check out the look he gives the camera when he says “gotcha”. Yeah, that’s a look most reserved for Michael Scott’s annoying antics. Just try to hold on to him Karen, but hold on tight because it’s going to get tougher.

Fancy New BeeslyWhy will it be tougher you ask? Because (Cue ‘Eye of the Tiger’ music) Fancy New Beesly is in the house y’all. FNB is all about the courage and the honesty. You know what she’s not about? Her boyfriend not wanting to hang with her and being called Pammy. Oh and may I add she’s not about being with a man with a serious issue controlling his temper.

So let’s back up a minute. While Michael and his #2 and his #3 (or is Andy #3…maybe Dwight took over #3 while Andy is anger management training)…anyway while the RM and the ARMs are away at the party, the rest of the office heads to Poor Richard’s for some boozing. After Roy beats Pam at a drinking game he tells her that she can’t keep anything from her and he can read her like a book. Oh really? You can read FNB like a book? I don’t think so.

Pam and her new found fanciness decides to tell Roy that if they are going to make it work this time, they have to be honest with each other. (Yup, it happened people.) Pam told Roy that on Casino Night, she kissed Jim. She said that Jim admitted his feelings and she realized that there were feelings there on her part too. Roy didn’t take this news well, and got extremely angry and yelled at Pam. The yelling came before he grabbed his beer mug and through it into the bar room mirror. Pam had enough and ended with him right there and then (nice FNB). As Pam fled, Roy and his brother Kenny managed to trash the bar in an anger filled rage. All this brings me to my favorite moment of the night. We come back from the final commercial break to see Roy sitting outside the bar. His brother tells him that he paid off the owners so the cops don’t have to get involved. Roy sits there for a minute and then simply states (come on all together now) “I am going to kill Jim Halpert” BOOYAH!!!

Pam and Roy

Game on people. Maybe this is finally the momentum we have been waiting for all season long. Thank for writers for letting us witness Pam telling Roy about Jim. Thank you for not taking that away from us. I do fear however that with a 6 week break you will steal from us the moment that Roy confronts Jim. Since The Office usually airs in real time, I’m not sure how this is going to play out. (Tiny, Miniscule, not even plot centric spoiler ahead…..We know that in what I believe is the next ep, the guys are talking about March Madness, so that might be telling in how far ahead the time line will be when the show returns. ) Please don’t rob us of this moment. We want to see Roy confront Jim about his feelings for Pam. Oh, and if you can have Karen standing there too it would be great. And one last request, can you please have Jim tell Roy that he still loves Pam? Great, thanks…that is all. Damn, no it’s not….sorry, one last thing…can you please drop this whole Toby crushing on Pam storyline? Let Toby be happy with Gym Girl. She was hot. Let Toby be with a hot chick, ok? Alright now I’m done.

Roy (David Denman)Overall a fantastic episode that left me quite satisfied (TWSS). I’ve only watched it once, but I’ve seen the Roy freaking out scene about 20 time now. And no, it’s not because David Denman looked incredibly hot as he was yelling at Pam (but he did look hot). I thought David was incredible in that scene. There wasn’t a false moment about it. It was raw and honest…nice work buddy. The false moment came seconds later when Roy and Kenny started trashing the bar. Maaaaybe I could see Roy doing it, but Kenny? Dude, why would he do it? Whatevs. Another great thing to look for when you are re watching the ep, is how Kevin has his fists raised as Roy starts yelling. Like Kevin was really going to take on Roy…ha. It made for a great moment.

There were so many moments tonight. Most of which I didn’t even begin to cover. But hey, we’ve got 6 weeks to talk about it, right?

Here’s where you come in. What did you think of the episode? Are you at all afraid for Jim Halpert’s life? Pam seems to be on the path to singlehood again…will Jim be far behind? So much to discuss. Feel free to chat it up here, or over at the GMMR forums.

P.S. The first deleted scene is already up

Great recap. But only two words stand out in my mind from it right now: six weeks. SIX WEEKS???? That’s insane. That’s like a mini-summer. There’s so much to deal with. I’m not afraid for Jim, though. He’s got some rage in him as well, but not the freak-out-trash-the-bar rage. More like directed, controlled, justified rage. And he’s gonna stomp on Roy with all the fury he’s been sitting on since Pam rejected him for the fat oaf. Man, my thoughts are all over the map right now. I have to watch this again, get a good night’s sleep, watch it one more time and then compose my reaction. But seriously, six weeks?

  2. Mrs. JBK on February 23rd, 2007 1:46 am

The best Office recaps on the web. You really need to start writing them every week.

We are going to see Roy confront Jim. I can’t imagine that they would not show us that.

JAM is on their way back to each other. I can feel it in my bones.

  3. neverenoughjam on February 23rd, 2007 4:49 am

Wow. Talk about anger management issues; Andy’s got nothing on Roy. What do you bet they wind up in the same group therapy session? Nah, I don’t believe it either.

No, I’m not afraid for Jim’s life. Dwight will save him with his kung fu fighting skills.

Oh, this was a wonderful ep. The funny is back. The FUNNY is so BACK. God, Michael and Jan ALONE were worth the evening. Loved Jim snorting into his wine when Michael asked his CFO how much he paid for his house. Loved the running gag with the potato salad. Saw the joke about the straitjacket coming a mile away–and still laughed at it. ITA about the Toby/Pam crush; stick a fork in that one, it is SO done.

And the best part was Pam FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY owning her feelings. No, the best part was Karen’s prank on Jim. No, the best part was Jan’s “TWSS”….

What a great way to segue into hiatus. Yay! Yay! Yay! I’m so happy again!

  4. Heather on February 23rd, 2007 6:28 am

A-MA-ZING. I thought Roy was so hot. Halpert better watched his back. Karen better watch her man.

  5. Clare on February 23rd, 2007 7:46 am

WOW!! This one was good….soooo good [/Jim]. I can’t wait to see this unfold, and yes, I REALLY hope we get to see it unfold. Looks like it’s all coming out in the open now, finally. Hope Pam holds on to her newfound FNB, she was fabulous. And David Denman? An AWESOME episode for him, really really great. Michael and Jan were absolutely hilarious. I’ve always loved Michael but lately his stuff has been fantastic. I found Dwight’s home inspection pretty funny too. “Oh good you’re up” (in David’s sons room) …heh heh heh too funny. six weeks….damn

  6. Angelica on February 23rd, 2007 7:56 am

I just have to say that one of my favorite parts of the episode came when Pam told Roy about the kiss. I loved it because Pam didn’t delcare that Jim kissed her. Instead she said “I kissed Jim”. Fancy New Beesly, indeed!

  7. Sus on February 23rd, 2007 8:08 am

    I am thoroughly pissed off.

I missed the first half of the episode because of a stupid power outage.

Someone please tell me where I can watch the entire episode without downloading it on iTunes. I will cry and cry and cry if there’s no way.

I thought Roy’s anger came out of NOwhere. I can see why he’d be angry but it was like 0 to OldRoy in 0.01 seconds. Awesome stuff, though. ๐Ÿ˜‰ The whole time Pam was telling him, I was saying, “Oh God no Pam don’t no no no no!” But then I was glad she got it out.

I loved Dwight sitting in the rocking chair, creepy as hell. That was awesome. Ooh, just remembered I have to tape SNL this week. I have to keep reminding myself or I’ll miss it.

  8. Brooke on February 23rd, 2007 9:06 am

    Wow.

Seriously… was not expecting the ending. I’d read Kate’s blog about some “questions” – but seriously. Wow. This was definitely an awesome episode on all counts. I LOVED, loved FNB.

“Don’t call me Pammy.” Was classic.

And the honesty, wow. Obviously, this will begin the downfall of Jim and Karen as well, because yeah, Roy’s going to go ape crazy in front of everyone, I’m assuming. It’s about time Karen found out that Jim was “in love” and that Pam was engaged. Puts a WHOLE other spin on it all.

As for Roy’s reaction, yes he was angry, but I agree, it was right on. I mean, what season was it where he just saw Jim leaning over Pam’s desk and pushed him into the wall? Boy has a tempr.

    Ok. I’ll stop.

But Jan and the dying star comment and the “that’s what she said.”

    Classic.

  9. Jim Mosby on February 23rd, 2007 9:13 am

What a great episode. I have too many thoughts and not enough time. I don’t know how I can watch that show without you all anymore. It’s the only way to do it! ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. Amber on February 23rd, 2007 9:22 am

My favorite line was Michael’s and I know I’ll mess it up. But when Jan pulls him into the bathroom and he declares “this is where you like your private time.” So adorable, our little man-child!
And GMMR, you are so right that Jim barely cared about Karen’s supposed meanderings with all the office men. I think he was shocked to think she’d fool around with someone married, but then probably realized he doesn’t know what she would or wouldn’t do because he just doesn’t know her that well.
I cannot WAIT for a Roy/Jim confrontation. Remember the basketball game? Roy’s all talk and smashy smash with his bro, but I don’t know if he can really come through on a threat.
Thanks for the recap, GMMR. I’d just like to say the haitus couldn’t come at a better time for me as I’m due to give birth any minute now. And we just got internet installed at home for two main reasons: so we can watch The Office deleted scenes or any webisodes to tide us over, and so I can keep updated on GMMR and we’ll be sure we won’t miss the triumphant return!

  11. kilwiggle7 on February 23rd, 2007 9:24 am

I loved this episode as well. I thought it was cute that Toby spent the whole night trying to win that yellow stuffed animal for Pam and then she told him to give it to his daughter (I just got done watching Take Your Daughter to Work Day). So cute… But I’m still rooting for Jim and Pam.

I was impressed by Pam’s new attitude… exactly what she needs! A whole 6 weeks without the Office makes me a sad girl… ๐Ÿ™

  12. s on February 23rd, 2007 9:24 am

i think you were missing the point with Kenny, Roy’s brother. The fact that he jumped in and started trashing the bar without knowing why Roy was upset was meant to be funny, and show how knuckleheaded these guys really are- sadly, I’ve seen guys like that, always up for some destruction and it doesn’t matter whether they know the reasoning or not. When he immediately started breaking things as soon as he saw Roy shatter the mirror, that was one of the funniest and most real moments for me.

  13. kilwiggle7 on February 23rd, 2007 9:24 am

    good luck amber!!!!

  14. LT on February 23rd, 2007 11:28 am

I agree with you S. I thought it was hilarious when Kenny just jumped in and started trashing the bar just because his brother was doing it. In fact, for me, that was the funniest part of last night’s show. I’m still a little confused about Karen though. Can someone tell me if that really was her ex that she pointed out to Jim? I couldn’t tell by her “pranking” skills if she had dated anyone in th room. And why was she straightening that one guy’s tie? Great recap, GMMR.

  15. velcro on February 23rd, 2007 12:05 pm

Dead Star Comment by Jan was brilliant. One of the best lines the writers of this show have come out with for sure and the way it was delivered was killah .

  16. srah on February 23rd, 2007 12:55 pm

GO Fancy New Beesley! I’m so proud of her! And I’m so happy that Jan has let Michael into her heart enough to get her saying “That’s what she said.” Hilarious.

  17. Scarlette on February 23rd, 2007 1:18 pm

http://www.fanpop.com Gives all up to date Office episodes..

Did anyone else think it was a little stale? I enjoyed it but they really need to step things up a bit. The last five minutes was excellent… I missed Oscar not being in as often.

The office needs to go on a trip- get new scenery , new relationships started. Perhaps a convention in London?

  18. Jessica on February 23rd, 2007 1:32 pm

Even though I hate to say it, they did deny us Jim and Pam saying goodbye when he left for Stamford…they may do it again and not let us see Roy vs. Jim. Could a possible Karen vs. Pam II make up for it? ๐Ÿ˜‰

  19. Mandy on February 23rd, 2007 1:41 pm

LT, after Karen said she was just kidding, she said that Jim was her first, so none of the other guys was a former boyfriend of hers.

  20. Jeannie on February 23rd, 2007 3:19 pm

I love this show. But I am worried that with Roy wanting to confront Jim that it will push Jim and Pam farther apart not closer. The reason this worries me is because I am afraid Jim will be irritated by the whole Roy wanting to kill me thing. This is just a thought and I hope I am wrong because I really want Jim and Pam to be together.

  21. Jenny on February 23rd, 2007 3:26 pm

Mandy – I’m not sure about that….I was still left confused why she was straightening that guy’s tie, too. And I didn’t interpret her saying that Jim was her first – as in first office romance….I thought she was pranking him again by saying he was her very first – like first boyfriend – which is unlikely. ??

I’m still confused, but was happy to see no lovey-dovey between Karen and Jim…notice the scene on the couch he is rubbing his leg?? I had to go back and make sure he wasn’t rubbing Karen’s leg! (He wasn’t, BTW.)

  22. LT on February 23rd, 2007 4:21 pm

I feel the same way Jenny. I just got finished watching the episode for a second time and I’m still confused. Did you notice Jim’s face when he saw Karen straightening that guy’s tie? I mean, did she even know the guy? That was just strange regardless. And Jo- you must have loved Dwight’s BSG reference.

  23. Heather on February 23rd, 2007 4:48 pm

Yeah I was a bit confused by the whole Jim/Karen story line. One thing I did like is he seemed quite indifferent to her for the most part. Otherwise that story – it didn’t seem to be going anywhere. I am quite curious if they will do a Jim/Roy confrontation or it will be in real time and 6 weeks will have passed and we will just have it recapped or talked about? Hopefully Dwight will be there to back Jim up if it’s needed.:)

  24. John D'arc on February 23rd, 2007 6:08 pm

    ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  25. Kris on February 23rd, 2007 6:41 pm

Heather, LT, and Jenny: my interpretation as to why Karen was straightening that guy’s tie was b/c it was part of the prank. She knew Jim was watching (i think), and wanted to give off the impression that this guy may have been another former lover or maybe that she was flirting w/ him. I think that scene was for the prank’s sake–she did it b/c Jim was watching. She was joking about dating every guy there but she was also joking about Jim being her first boyfriend. That’s what i got out of the scene.

And, GMMR, something tells me that we’re going to be denied the showdown between Jim and Roy. That totally pisses me off. I just don’t see them putting off the showdown for 6 weeks b/c the show does take place in real time. That makes me sad. I really want to see a duel!

  26. Lisa aka LMR722 on February 23rd, 2007 7:19 pm

GMMR – awesome recap – best anywhere.

I loved this ep and it will have to do for the next 6 weeks. I’m normally unspoiled but even I’m trying to find out at least the name of the next ep. That’d be something to hold us over anyway. I will add to the other voices, “please do not withhold the denouement” We have been cheated in the past and we want it this time – we mean it. If the first scene in the next ep is a talking head, I will be FURIOUS. I want to see confrontation and all important witnesses on deck!

My fav line of the night hands down, though, was Jan’s TWSS… OMG

  27. sabrina on February 23rd, 2007 10:36 pm

That’s what she said…wow I finally got what TWSS meant…haha

David Denman was hott when he started going all “Andy Bernard” at the bar. It was awesome. I know his brother joined in b/c he’s still not over about his jet skis. LOL

I’m excited to see a Jim and Roy show down. I can’t wait!!

  28. deV on February 23rd, 2007 10:47 pm

Great recap! I’m pretty sure I heard Kenny mutter “jet skis” when he started picking up the chair and wrecking the bar with Roy. I think he thought Roy was upset and had a surge of anger about the jet skis and joined in. “I’m gonna kill Jim Halpert.” Best DD line ever.

  29. cure6199 on February 24th, 2007 1:59 am

the office seriously NEEDS to be 10 minutes longer. Loved the episode but could seriously be perfect with extra time!! Can’t wait 6 weeks but i’m dying to know what happens with roy confronting Jim. GO FNB

  30. Jake on February 24th, 2007 5:02 am

I agree with Brooke and Velcro–Jan’s line was one of the best in the episode:

“The downside, date Michael Scott publicly and collapse onto myself like a dying star.”

Hilarious! As far as the Jim/Karen storyline, I saw it the same way as Kris above. Karen was pranking the whole night. When Jim finally broke and asked if she’d dated every guy there she pranked again by saying, “no…you’re my first.” Remember, after Jim responded with a “really?” she said, “geez, it’s so easy it’s almost not any fun!” Meaning, she got him again. I think the real point to take from this is that Jim, even while being pranked, isn’t having any fun with Karen. He’s going through the motions.

My prediction for the Jim/Roy confrontation: it’ll be in flashback. We’ll have an interview with Jim wearing a shiner and then we’ll see tape of the fight, which I think will actually be Roy coldcocking Jim. Probably in the parking lot. I doubt the writers will combine the fight with any declaration of love. They seem to keep things in step with real life and those would be two big emotional issues at once. But I can see them throwing in some words between Pam and Roy, overheard by Jim, that tips him off to Pam’s feelings.

  31. Mel aka foggymoontour on February 24th, 2007 12:03 pm

GMMR – I’m totally with you on your Karen/Jim comment. I felt the same way – Jim thought she was ridiculous, and at the same time didn’t really care. Like Jake said, he’s just going through the motions at this point.

I’m stunned that we have to wait six weeks. This is going to be hard. Yeah yeah. TWSS.

  32. Jen on February 25th, 2007 4:22 pm

6 weeks. then the conversation that we’ve all been waiting for finally arrives.

    BRINGGGG ITTTTTTTT
    TEAM HALPERT babyyyyyy

  33. Val on February 27th, 2007 5:06 pm

Of course, I love the sweet, awkward Jim & Pam relationship. It’s been one of the things that keeps me watching the show religiously each week. But I’m enjoying the quirkiness of adding two more relationships to the “Office”: Dwight & Angela; and Jan & Michael. Especially Jan & Michael – they are both such brassy people on the surface, but so damn vulnerable underneath, that it’s a treat to watch them spar with each other.

I think so many people have to re-watch to catch the REAL reason Jan pulled Michael into the bathroom for a little “romantic tryst.” I’ve heard so many people comment that Michael makes her so HOT that she couldn’t resist. But if you watch the episode, you’ll notice that this brittle woman who values her competent appearance to others so fiercely was cringing every time Michael made a comment about Sandals resorts and the two of them being “Luvers.” I think she just desperately needed to find a way to make him SHUT UP! without screaming it at him and competely ending the relationship with him. I can’t remember what he was rambling on to the corporate CEO about just before the escape to the bathroom, but she looked mortified and panic-stricken. I think she was on the verge of screaming at him to just SHUT UP, but her therapist has told her (as she has often repeated to the camera) that she needs to take a chance and date Michael. Sex was the only solution she could think of.
