Rashida Jones & John Krasinski in NYC (WARNING: SPOILERS for THE OFFICE)

Someone over on the NBC.com boards snapped these photos of my main squeeze John Krasinski and his “friend” Rashida Jones exiting a NYC subway. At first I let out a huge sigh of relief…it was nice to see John with Rashida especially after being forced to listen to all this John Krasinski/Rene Zellweger nonsense this past week. And you can tell how REALLY down on the JKras/Rene rumors when I get excited to see John with Rashida (I’ve come so far).
Anyway, I figured the two VERY close friends were just spending some quality time together as they often do in NYC. But on further inspection of the pics, you can see Paul Lieberstein (Toby) in the background. And in another shot you can see a camera off to the left.
We know that they are done shooting episodes of The Office. We also know that John wrapped earlier than the rest of the cast to head down to the Carolina’s to shoot “Leatherheads“. Could they perhaps doing some reshoots for the season finale? Here are some working theories and observations…
“Dundie Award winner for Office fan with the biggest scoop of the week” goes to “Ryanyc” who is the kind soul who snapped these shots and posted them on NBC.com.
Here’s what “Ryanyc” had to say:
“…they did a couple of different ‘takes’. The first time I saw them they were being filmed walking out of the subway station. After they did that a couple of times, I thought they were done as Rashida and John both got into a large van. The rest of the ‘crew’ was still outside talking amongst themselves so I jokingly asked one of the assistants if Rainn was around and he said ‘no’.
The next shot they took was of the pair at a hotdog stand, then as they walked down 8th towards St. Mark’s Place. I didn’t get any pics when they were walking unfortunately.
The whole time their acting felt very natural – Rashida would be tugging on John’s sleeve, there was this one time where they were about to cross the street and she held John back because he didn’t see a car was approaching. Overall, if you didn’t know they were filming you’d think they were an actual couple. As for the crew there was only the one cameraman, couple of assistants and Paul of course. “
THEORY #1: We know that “Karen” and “Jim” head to NYC for interviews with corporate during the season finale. Could they be doing some on location shots that they weren’t able to do during the regular season? (This is what I’m leaning towards)
THEORY #2: John, Rashida and Paul all just happen to be in NYC and decided to get together. Camera crews just happen to be around and spotted them just as they were exiting the subway….NAH!!!
THEORY #3: They are filming some footage for The Office DVD extras. I don’t really buy this one, but see observations A & B – John looks REALLY good – would they let Jim look this good?
OBSERVATION A: John is NOT sporting the hideous Jim hair he has had as of late. His hair actually looks good. Did Karen force him to get a haircut for the interview (please Karen).
OBSERVATION B: I don’t think they have EVER let Jim Halpert look as good as he does in these pics. Believe me I’m not complaining, it’s about time they let his inner JKras out on the show. To that end, I think Rashida’s outfit is more “Karen” than Rashida. I can’t tell if the necklace she’s wearing is “Karen’s” horseshoe necklace, but it it was that would be a big clue. UPDATE: The purse Rashida is holding in the pics above is the same purse Karen has – coincidence…I think not. (thanks to mycrazyhair for that tip)
OBSERVATION C: Look at the people in the background. Seeing that the people are clearly watching what’s going on, theory #2 just doesn’t hold up.
OBSERVATION D: If this is “Jim” and “Karen” then why is he smiling at her? This is the season finale people…she was supposed to be dunzo by now. Hell, Karen was supposed to be dunzo after episode 10. Bring on Pamela!!
Do I have to even bother keeping an eye out for JKras when I’m in L.A. next weekend? Whether he’s in NYC or in the Carolina’s, it looks like he’s probably spending time on the East Coast these days. Actually, with my luck he’s probably visiting his family back home in Newton, MA while I’m here in Cali.

Saw this over on NBC and have been depressed every since. Hope upon hope that this isn’t really Office footage. I agree, GMMR, that the pics show John and definitely not Jim. In S2 when Jim was shown in non-work clothes, it was a somewhat dorky striped shirt. How sad that I even know that. The dress and hair tell me that he is not in character. It’s a little harder to tell from Karen’s dress.
Any chance at all these are “mock” scenes to throw us off the scent of a Jim/Pam connection that finally happens?

Ryanyc says they did a couple of takes coming out of the subway station…so it’s definitely for film…whether it’s reshoots or DVD stuff…I’m not sure. But it certainly isn’t typical Jim.
I’m just confused. I know that it is obviously for The Office, but I don’t get why Jim would have changed his hair, even at Karen’s request. But, he probably did, so whatever.
GRRR, I want May 17th! NOW!
(Oh, and I wished that I was in NYC yesterday and caught this, Ryanyc is now the most popular poster over on the NBC boards! haha)
Ok, I was thinking…since this is clearly John and not Jim, perhaps they were just rehearsing or blocking for a scene? Maybe they shot the scene as Jim and Karen later in the day? Hmmmm. I cute as John looks with tidy hair, I certainly hope Jim doesn’t change his hair!

None of them are in character, at all. I don’t see how this could be for The Office. I do see the camera but it could just be paparazzi.
The characters go to New York for job interviews they are not dressed for that at all. And Toby in a hat? I just can’t picture that at all.
Maybe Karen made Jim get a “corporate” haircut, which would not be a bad thing at all. But….geez, I don’t know what’s going on. I thought John finished filming weeks before the rest of the cast did???
My vote is that the three of them were just hanging out and it’s not tied to the show at all.
Oh, God, unless they were just doing a run through and this wasn’t the real thing yet. That could explain why they aren’t dressed right.
Based on the few spoilers I know, my theory ire the last few eps is that Pam tells Jim everything in Beach Games and Jim, not really believing her, decides he just can’t deal with it anymore and tries for the corporate job. Of course, he eventually comes around, realizes Pam is for real, and stays in Scranton to be with her.
But, I also thought that he and Karen might have had an argument about whatever happened with Pam which is what prompts her to try for the job. If these pics are real, then most of my theory is shot to hell.
Ok, I’m going to try not to be worried. We know they go to NYC for the interviews so, if anything, it has to do with that. Maybe those were the only scenes left to be shot.
cam – did you read the post above? The person that saw the pics also said they did multiple takes. It was clear they were filming. As for Paul/Toby being there, he’s a producer for the show so it could make sense that he was there.
If they were just walking around, why would Rashida be holding Karen’s purse?
This has definitely caused a firestorm of speculation over on NBC.com (me among them). I think it’s real but I also think that it could be more back story for what may be a fake ending. I hear there are multiple possible endings.
OK, I think that Karen did force Jim to get a haircut, and they’re in NY for interviews, but I think the reason they’re still together is because they don’t reak up. I think that Karen will get the high-up job rather than Michael, once they realize how much better she is. This will permanently seperate the two (I HOPE). So long, Karen!
It IS too much of a coincidence that the three of them are there together, but NONE of them appear as though they are “in character”, at least clothing-wise. Everyone has already said John doesn’t look like “Jim” here, but I think Rashida looks like Rashida…not Karen. Paul could be directing or script supervising? Who knows? (b/c he doesn’t look like Toby here either.
I started to think maybe it was a shoot for “Brief Interviews with Hideous Men” b/c John is directing/acting in that along with Rashida, but then Paul shows up.
I’m totally baffled. Maybe it was a run-through for a scene. I don’t see why they would suddenly be okay with changing Jim’s hair since they’ve had him in a wig the past three episodes. Why would they go to all that trouble and then suddenly be okay with different Jim hair?
It’s vexing.
Wow. I don’t know what to say. John most definitely looks like John, and not Jim. But Rashida has Karen’s purse, and then with the cameras and Paul (one of the head writers) being there…. Man. Maybe Jim and Karen go to NYC for interviews, but these scenes could just be them walking around NYC before or after the interviews.
I dunno… “Jim” looks so different – are they trying to show how he’s changed, and maybe how Karen has changed him?? Or maybe this whole thing is, somehow, just for the Season 3 DVD extras. (and BTW, the pics of John/Jim smiling could be from when they weren’t filming…)
Anyway, I guess only time will tell, sadly, i.e. a month. Stupid month!
Maybe it’s a fantasy scene of Karen’s? John looks good, they are in NY & seemingly together. Maybe she’s thinking how it could be if they both got jobs at corporate, both moved and were finally together. (ie, rid of Pam.)
Or maybe they really do get closer together…there is no way Pam & Jim will finally be together–not yet, anyway. That would screw up all of the anticipation on the show.
Who knows…I definitely agree that it’s Karen, they were acting like a couple so it has to be Jim (not John) so I really think it’s a fantasy.
Damn John Kras looks pretty buff in the pic, usually in the office he just looks like a scrawny weenie. Must be for that new football movie. And why does Toby look so grumpy in that shot?
I WAS IN NYC THAT DAY! LIKE 10 BLOCKS AWAY! UGH. I spent my day shopping when i could have walked a couple blocks and gotten there. i am now offially depressed.
Dont you think its possible they are in NY to maybe do a talk show or something? That would make sense too.
nonono. John is definently being John. He would never have that hairdue if he was being Jim, and that is definently not a Jim-gettup. As for Rashida… she and Karen do have a similar style, probabaly (besides the pant-suit thing), so I really don’t think she’s acting.
My theory: the cast finished up their shooting in New York for the season finale, but they were still there. There could be a number of reason that Paul went with the crew to NYC and now they’re done shooting and just chilling together in NYC for a drink, or coffee or lunch or something before they head back, or maybe they stayed for a day, or something.
Not that weird.
The guy that took the pics was right there and said they did multiple takes of them coming up from the subway, Leslie, and so they were definitely filming something and not just chilling. What, I don’t know. I find that when I look at Jim at times he doesn’t even look like John and then visa versa but wow, the guy in those pictures is not Jim.
I agree with whoever said they were probably doing a run-through instead of an actual take. It makes the most sense to me. He wouldn’t need to have his “Jim hair” for a run-through. And you just don’t show up for a corporate interview in jeans. Unless they’ve already done the interviews and are sticking around for sight-seeing.

so this could be for the show or it could be the extras which would make sense for the multiple takes. however, the more pictures I see of John and Rashida, the more I’m convinced that they are together in real life. don’t know though…anyways, it could be that the season finale will be like casino night in the fact that jim and pam don’t get together until the last scene. if that was true then karen and jim wouldn’t break up until later that episode. jkras is beyond adorable whatever they do with his hair, but it does look better in these pictures then it has lately on the ofice
Is it possible this is unrelated to TO? On a similar note, a local radio station does a weekly Celebrity gossip segment with Star Magazine and, of course, RZ and JK were a cover story this week. The reporter from Star described JK as “something of a lady’s man”. LOL. Maybe he is trying to dispel the rumors his own way.
I think they are shooting a scene for the show because well, Paul is there with and so is a camera man. I remember Greg Daniels did the same thing with Steve in season 2. Also, Rashida is wearing Karen’s purse and John is wearing Jim’s watch. If you look at his left wrist it’s the same watch he always wears on the show.
I love the idea of Jim getting a makeover because well, I’m sick of that wig he’s wearing. Also, a makeover fit in if Jim wants a fresh new start in a possibly new job. I mean he is trying to move on, whether we like it or not.

I think this is for Brief Interviews with Hideous Men. I don’t think the purse and the watch are nearly as significant as John’s hair and Paul’s hat. Those are major, major style changes that would not be allowed on The Office.
“Brief Interviews” wrapped months ago. And I don’t think we are seeing “Toby” in those pics…I think it’s Paul, as in Paul a producer for the show.
I’m leaning towards this being a rehearsal…they go into costume, ruin John’s hair and ta da…it’s Jim and Karen.
Glad everyone’s enjoying the pictures. It certainly was a rush to see stars from my favorite sitcom in real life!
I posted a few more pictures on the NBC site — they’re from my friend’s cell phone camera so the quality’s not that great, but there’s a shot that clearly shows the cameraman.

When I saw filming in NYC for movies, they would close off where the filming was and let the spectators look from where it was closed off. I know exactly where this station is and I would have been there at St. Marks yesterday if I still was in town. THAT sucks.
Normally, when I would be around a subway station, unless I was looking for or expecting a person to be coming up from the subway, I wouldn’t be staring straight into the subway entrance and looking at people coming up the stairs. I think that these people knew that there was “filming” going on but didn’t know for what so they just lingered around.
I think that they are doing some external shots that they did not get to do before because of the weather and because John had to go to film his movie. Maybe there is a break in the movie filming and they just decided to do this now and add it into the season finale. Maybe they are filming a special commercial for the season finale. I do think that they are using his haircut for the movie for a change in The Office to make him more corporate. Maybe Pam or Ryan says something to him to make him think about change.
I do not think that it is extras for a DVD or anything like that because they wouldn’t bring just 2 characters back for that.
I hadn’t even heard of any rumors going on with John and Renee, but the funny thing is that when I found out that she was also in the movie, I knew that somehow she would attempt to sink her grubby claws into him and try to keep him as her own. She is just so awful.
Did Paul write the episode? Maybe that’s the reason why he’s there…to supervise the scene since he wrote the episode? I, too, agree that maybe they were rehearsing a scene… Hmm…
i walked right by this spot yesterday and was on the phone with my mum. i can’t believe i missed jim, karen, and toby!
John wrapped early because of “Leatherheads.” They’re probably just making up for the lost time. And I say the more JKras in the finale the better…

it’s picking-up shooting if anything. the shots are of them just roaming around new york and/or blocking. since they’re in nyc, it’s probably for the final or penultimate episodes. you can’t shoot NYC in CA and have it come off as being genuine.
whenever i’m in nyc, i sightsee and just walk around. what’s so unusual to think that JIM and KAREN wouldn’t sightsee in casual clothing?
Could they be shooting a Season 4 Premiere Episode??? New Seasons usually mean new haircuts – They are dressed for cooler weather… Could be scenes from the S4 opener.
Kath, I’m going with your theory #1 – pick-up shots for the finale. My guess is Jim restyled his hair for the “fancy” NYC interview, and Karen is showing him around NYC trying to convince him it “ain’t so bad”; this is either before or after their interview hence the casual clothes.

Not many people are discussing the idea that maybe Paul Lieberstein got JKras and RJo to be in a side project he was writing. To me, this seems the most likely.

This is actually probably for “Brief Interviews with Hideous Men” , which both John and Rashida are in. Then again, I’m probably wrong because that’s supposed to be in post production right now, so never mind.
Maybe they had Jim and Karen staying together at the end of the season finale because the writers are clearly jerks about this (saying nasty stuff about pro-JAM fans) and then realized they’d lose about 2/3 of their fan base if they keep this stupid Karen plot line going, so they re-did the ending.
Julia – when have the writers said nasty stuff about pro-Jam fans? I’ve never heard this – I’m interested to know more since I always thought they were supportive of the fans.
I agree that this is most likely a shot for “Brief Interviews”, which both Rashida and John have roles in. Since John is directing, it makes sense that for a scene in which he appears, he might ask Paul L. to help out behind the camera as a fill-in director. Yeah, I know BI has supposedly wrapped, but it’s John’s picture and if he decides he needs another fill shot he can jolly well set it up and do it, at whatever time it’s convenient for him and Rashida.
If you read the comments, and posts over at NBC.com, it was confirmed that they were filming THE OFFICE.

I was thinking that yesterday when I made my message; however I forgot to add it!
Maybe they are doing some scenes for season 4 because if Rashida’s schedule is going to be busy with “The Rules For Starting Over” then they might not be sure when they can get Rashida and John together again and so they are filming some scenes in advance.
Listen people, we KNOW they go to NYC for the job interviews. I think Jim changes his hair to make a good impression. He’s already in with the CEO. After the interview he and Karen spend a little quality time together. Jim has made comments about how great it was that NYC was only half an hour away from their old office. I bet there’s a narration by Jim over the footage shot of he and Karen being a great couple…because of the decision he has to make. If he OR Karen get the job, things would get complicated, and like it or not…things ARE getting serious b/w Jim & Karen. Besides all that, Pam is still the wild card and a driving variable for the show. Don’t count out a decision that might have to made concerning her again.

nope it was for the episode when they are walking around the night before the episode it is dark so Jim’s shirt looks different but that is definitely Karen’s outfit
