BETTY, LOST, BROS & SIS Catch Up - Give Me My Remote : Give Me My Remote

BETTY, LOST, BROS & SIS Catch Up

May 21, 2007 by

Being in New York for a few days really threw off my TV watching schedule. I had to avoid family, friends and promos just so I could avoid being spoiled for some of my favorite shows.  Well, I’m all caught up and feel that all is right in the world again. So here’s my two cents on this past week’s episodes of BROTHERS & SISTERS, LOST and UGLY BETTY.

Brothers and Sisters Season Finale

Brothers & Sisters – I’m not sure I could love this show any more than I already do.  I caught up last night one the past two episodes, and my god if I wasn’t left in the fetal position crying my eyes out.  Only one baby making it?  And my god, Justin leaving for Iraq?  Greg Berlanti has always known how to get me crying, but last night was insane. I love the Walker family and enjoy how truly screwed up they are.  Best family on TV, hands down. In true Walker fashion, I needed some booze after watching those two episodes.

Lost

Lost – Yikes!  I didn’t realize that I had missed so much over the past two weeks.  I’ve always been a casual LOST fan.  Love the show, and I’ve seen every episode but I’ve never been a die hard, check out the message boards, fan.  That being said, I think the past two weeks were phenomenal. Ok, I didn’t really love the “invisible Jacob” plot, but it was still interesting to watch all the same. I really have no idea what to expect from the finale.  Is Locke alive? Will Charlie live (I hope so, he’s been fantastic these past few episodes)?  Will the Losties overtake The Others?  Smackdown of the century….game on!!  Looking forward to the season finale this week.

P.S. Remember when Charlie saved the woman in the alley from being mugged?  Did anyone else catch that the woman was Sayid’s Nadia?  Yup.  Crazy!

Betty and Henry, Ugly Betty

Ugly Betty – I have to say I was kind of surprised as how much I didn’t enjoy the season finale of UGLY BETTY.  Listen, the show is quality all the time, so when it has an off episode I definitely notice.  The problem with Ugly Betty is that I think it sometimes suffers from an identity crisis.  Is it a comedy, a dramady, a telenovela? When it tries to be everything to everyone I think the show suffers.  The season finale seemed like more like an episode of Passions (and no, that’s not a compliment) than the TV shows that one the Golden Globe for best comedy (that one still blows my mind). The “cliffhangers” were very soap operery (but maybe that was the joke).  Alexis and Daniel in a car crash?  Betty rushing to the airport to tell Henry Charlie’s baby might not be his? Amanda finding out that Fey was her mother? I guess is they were going for the soap angle, they could have at least been a little more creative (and funny) about it.

I will say this…I was completely touched and shed more than a few tears when Betty had to tell Hilda that Santos was killed.  That one broke my heart, since I personally found Santos blossoming relationship with Justin to be one of the most endearing parts of the show.

Betty, you know I love you doll, but the season finale should have left me wanting more.

I’m hoping Santos didn’t die, he’s just been shot and is in ICU or something like that. I actually like Santos now.

Oh, I almost forgot. I hope now that The Class is cancelled, Ritchie comes back to Ugly Betty. I love that guy.

I’m glad you posted something about Lost. I’ve been a fan since Day 1, and ever since they came back from that break earlier this season, the episodes have been Awesome! I’m thinking this is gonna be a great finale.

I so disagree about UB. It IS a soap opera of the most melodramatic, over the top kind – telenovela – and it AMAZES me when people complain about it being too soapy. UM, hello?? I don’t think its too soapy at ALL, especially if you watch some of the TN’s on the Spanish-speaking networks, UB doesn’t get anywhere CLOSE to the ridiculosity of those shows! But, anyway, yes, its a telenovela, so I don’t know why people are so shocked when things go really soapy. Its enjoyable to me, b/c the show is so self aware in regards to those things. I loved the finale, altho I definitely don’t think it was the best episode of the season at all.

    But *sob* RIP Santos!!!

Yes, I agree with Shari. Ugly Betty is a tongue-in-cheek homage to telanovelas. The original Columbian Ugly Betty was itself a telanovela. I believe the crazy over-the-top quality is on purpose, with a wink to the audience.

But it it is a telenovela then why is it going up against THE OFFICE and 30 ROCK in the Best Comedy category? And for the record I’m a huge fan of Ugly Betty, and this category has always been a sore spot for me.

I have no idea, GMMR, why its in the Comedy race. I consider it more of a comedy than a drama, personally, cuz I think 95% of the drama is very exaggerated and tongue-in-cheek, as Purvis said. Its kind of like Desperate Housewives, which when its really clicking well is EQUALLY a comedy and drama.

I think part of the reason why the finale went MORE the soapy way was b/c they wanted to give people something to talk about, a reason to come back next season.

That Charlie is a skank and I’m pissed that she’s making Henry move back to AZ with her!

Poor Santos. I was really starting to like that relationship also. Plus, he’s not too bad on the eyes.

I kind of liked it, but I definitely felt the cheesiness, but I think that’s been present since day one. They just took some of that away in the middle and now they’re bringing it back.

And as for LOST, that show is amazing and I can’t wait for tomorrow night! Don’t kill Charlie. He’s awesome.
