You Be the Critic..Kid Nation, Back to You, Gossip Girl, Kitchen Nightmares

September 20, 2007 by

There were quite a few new Fall shows that premiered last night.  You’ve heard me talk about them a lot over the past week or so, but now I want to hear from you.  If you watched KID NATION on CBS, BACK TO YOU on Fox, GOSSIP GIRL on The CW or KITCHEN NIGHTMARES tell us what you thought about each show.  Are any of them worthy of being talked about each week on GMMR?  Should you fellow GMMR readers give any of these shows a shot.

You be the critic..

I tried to watch Gosspip Girl but sorry, couldn’t get into it at all. Kid Nation? Don’t like kids so I have no interest. Plus, they weren’t REALLY out there on their own. Back to you? Kelsey Grammer? Yuck. Kitchen Nightmares? Again. Yuck. When does Puching Daisies start? And Moonlight?

Gossip Girl was everything I thought it would be. I loved it. Kitchen Nightmares was quite entertaining as well. I have no idea how I am suppose to watch Private Practive and Criminal Minds at the same time. I don’t remember ever having a Wednesday night with something I would want to see on 4 networks. This is going to be tough.

Well I watched Kid Nation last night. I was forced by my 8 year old daughter to sit through it. I was ready for it to be horrible. But I actually enjoyed it. At the end of the epidsode they gave the kids the option to leave if they wanted. One little 8 year old boy decided to go home. He was just the cutest little thing, but he was so homesick he just had to get out of there. One of the 14 year old girls is VERY mature for her age and that did creep me out a bit. She as like a thirty year old in a young teens body. The show wasn’t nearly as cringworthy as I thought it would be. You should give it at least one try.

“Gossip Girl”- downloaded the pilot for free the other day on iTunes. in the beginning, i was bothered by the narration to be honest, but then at the end of the episode, i realized that i had really enjoyed the show. i’m still not loving the narration (nothing against the actress, of course, ha) but i really liked seeing the different relationships between the characters & it was really sweet seeing young siblings (& characters in general) really looking out for each other for a change on tv- instead of fighting for comedy purposes. i already love the humphrey family, ha. this definitely made my dvr…
“Kid Nation”- i really enjoyed this as well, but for completely different reasons. i love kids & i got choked up (dare i say i teared up) many times throughout the show…tears of joy when someone achieved something they didn’t think they could & tears of sadness when the show stirred up my own feelings of being homesick as a kid going to sleep-away camp. i won’t make this novel any longer, but needless to say, this will also be on my dvr.
i recorded “Back to You” as well but i’m waiting to watch it with my mom, so that’s it for me!

Gossip Girl was exactly what i expected. Basically its nothing new…just teen drama and angst mixed with sex and alcohol.

Yep. But i loved it! I will definately be watching…this is just the show to capture the still sad OC audience and pick up those who are just sick of shows like One Tree Hill.

I think Penn Bagley cast as Dan Humphrey was a great choice. He is so far the character that is the easiest to connect with. It will be interesting to see how the characters develop over the season. Will Josh Schwartz be able to bring us another teen drama phenomenon?

I will be watching for sure. 🙂

I watched “Back to You” and it wasn’t as horrible as I thought it would be. I am not a fan of Patricia Heaton but she was decent in the role.
I watched “Kitchen Nightmares” and found the should to be good. My husband was hooked on “Hells Kitchen” this past summer and I just wanted to see Gordon Ramsey is in other kitchens. My background is in restaurant management so I found myself yelling at the screen a lot, especially when he was in the walk in

Like Gina, I watched “Back to You” and was pleasantly surprised that it was better than I thought. I’m not a Kelsey Grammer fan, but it was a cute show. The station manager reminded me of the Miles Davis role on “Murphy Brown” – only as played by a Chris Farley-type of actor. Anyway, it’s not DVR material for me, but if I see it on and there’s nothing else that I want to watch more, I’ll definitely tune in again.

  9. Bonnie on September 20th, 2007 1:25 pm

I thought “Back to You” was pretty lame in the beginning. Lame jokes, rather lame colleagues, almost hyper-fast paced delivery, but then it grew on me – towards the end. I’ll keep recording it for now.

I liked “Gossip Girl”. Although it was similarly melodramatic to One Tree Hill, etc., I thought the acting was better and the storylines were good.

I’m more excited about certain shows next week, though!

  10. Tara on September 20th, 2007 1:26 pm

Kitchen Nightmares- Last night’s episode was a cross between Hell’s Kitchen and The Sopranos! Outstanding!

Kid Nation- I love it, and I saved it on the DVR because I’m making my kids watch it. Maybe it will finally motivate them to have a little bit of personal responsibility!

Back To You- I like Kelsey Grammer and Patty Heaton, so I thought the show was great. The biggest suprise for me was after it was over and I left the channel on to watch Till Death. I’ll definitely be watching that this season!

  11. DarthMom on September 20th, 2007 2:10 pm

Back to You was better than I thought it would be. I also watched part of ‘Til Death for the first time and was surprised that it was fairly funny. Tried to watch Gossip Girl and thought it was boring — I just couldn’t get into it. I just can’t bring myself to watch Kid Nation even if it is good because I’m around kids all day and I do not want to watch them on TV at night. I tried to watch Top Model (which I usually like) and I think I might be tired of that show too because I was bored with that. I ended up watching a couple of episodes from season 2 of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” on DVD from Netflix. And then I fell asleep on the couch.

  12. SB on September 20th, 2007 2:11 pm

Dammit all if I did not get sucked into Kitchen Nightmares last night. I hate when I accidentally watch TV shows. 🙂 I don’t see it being crack for me, though. Fortunately, Billy flipped past Gossip Girl because I do love me some trashy teen dramas, and I felt a little like someone who has quit smoking and then someone lights a cigarette right in front of them … it was like I was being sucked into Dawson’s Creek all over again, and I already have enough guilty pleasures for the year. (I’m looking at you, America’s Next Top Model.) WTF am I going to do when I get a DVR?

  13. Sim on September 20th, 2007 4:30 pm

I decided to try and watch Gossip Girl – only because I like Kristen Bell (but even she couldn’t help the show). It is the same kind of teen drama, but worse…it’s like you can’t go anywhere without someone texting someone to your whereabouts. It made me wonder who’s watching me!
Sure Serena has that likeable factor, but I don’t want to waste my time, because there are so many good shows coming up this fall.
I looked forward to Kid Nation, because I just can’t stand parents who complain that they would never put their kid in that situation. (As if it’s some kind of abuse). Our country was built on our ansestors and their CHILDREN who worked very hard. There were no t.v.s, video games, or cell phones. Today’s kids are spoiled rotten (my nephew especially), so watching these kids work, together, to make a “home” for themselves for 40 days, gave me hope for our future. Really, if you have kids or not, it’s nice to see these kids become mature before your eyes. Which is more than I can say for the adults around me.

  14. kilwiggle7 on September 20th, 2007 4:41 pm

I watched Gossip Girl through the iTunes download. It was pretty good and I’ll probably continue watching. I do however think that it’s a little too racey for the younger teens, but being 25, I don’t feel dirty watching it like I would if I were younger. Parents should definitely think twice about letting someone younger than say, 14, watch the show.. but that could be said for many shows, so what am I talking about…

I watched Kid Nation last night and absolutely loved it. I like the mix of kids they got on the show, no two are alike and it’s interesting to see the group dynamics. The two older boys were fun, but if I were one of the other kids I would have gotten mightily upset at them. I was proud to see that these kids want to succeed and chose outhouses over the tv. Good for them! No one was upset at the decision either. The gold star is a great idea, I would love to make 20K in 3 days, unfortunately being a grad student, I make only a little above that a year :-/. I’ll definitely keep watching. I’m afraid my Wednesdays are my busiest TV days and I’m happy that FNL switched nights or else I’d be overbooked!

I downloaded Gossip Girl earlier this week, then watched it again on tv last night…I really enjoyed it. You can already see the Josh Schwartz influence in the relationships, especially with the parents. I liked most of the cast, it took me a little bit before I realized where I knew Blair from…Carrie Bishop from VM! I think it will turn out to be exactly what the OC was for me…. a good dose of high school drama, with a little heart thrown in there to justify a spot on my tivo 🙂 I vowed not to watch the CW this year out of loyalty to VM, but this doesn’t count because of the Kristen Bell narration…right?!?!

  16. snowy on September 20th, 2007 6:21 pm

Back to You was forgettable for me (lame jokes, overacting from both Frasier, I mean Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton). They did try to pull it in at the end though w/ the reveal so I’ll prob give it another shot until my Tivo is too full of other shows to watch.

Gossip Girls was A-mazing and I’m a bit sheepish to confess that but oh well! The fashion was fun to watch, the acting pretty decent, and who doesn’t love a peek into the lifestyles of these NY socialites? Blake Lively (main character) absolutely makes the show. She is subtle in her performance and you can really see her going either way–being really snotty and vindictive, or really trying to change and be sincere. I thought she was so-so in the Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants (but that’s b/c Alexis Bledel, outshined everyone) but this is definitely Blake’s show and I hope she makes it big because of it. Like the above poster said, I liked that the older siblings stepped up and took care of the younger ones. Here’s hoping that it is more than just a sexed up booze and alcohol orgy and that there will be more character driven storylines (and fabulous fashion!)

Gossip Girl fills the hole in my heart left by the cancellation of The OC- I really, really enjoyed it! The clothes, the hair, the sex, the drinking, the hot guys! Everything about it was great, down to the killer soundtrack. I am so psyched to see how this show progresses and its definitely earned a home on my Tivo!

  18. Andrew on September 21st, 2007 1:16 am

I’m still holding my breath for Pushing Daisies and Chuck, but so far Gossip Girl is the best new fall show. I too was devastated by the loss of the OC but a show like this will definitely fill the gap. The characters are so well written, you can’t help but fall in love with Dan. All in all, I’m really excited to see where this show goes.

I tried to watch Back to You but couldn’t make it through 10 minutes — it was that bad. Generic, boring humor, just like Everybody Loves Raymond.

Now that Gilmore Girls is off, the CW is useless to me once again.

  20. SB on September 21st, 2007 10:44 am

Courtney, NO! Don’t give up on the CW yet–there’s still Supernatural!

  21. HallieNYC on September 25th, 2007 11:34 am

I caught Gossip Girl and I definitely enjoyed it! Teen trashy dramas are what keep me hanging on to life (lol). But seriously, it is the show to watch this season because unlike so many other teen dramas Gossip Girl centers around New York City kids…and nothing is more interesting than that 🙂

Check out some of the videos of clips, interviews, and the songs from the show!

I Loved Kid Nation so much. Greg is by far the coolest person on a reality show ever. It’s like watching Sawyer on Lost except their kids. I can’t understand why anyone wouldn’t like the show, it’s cute, it’s funny, it’s a tear-jerker, and it’s some of the best drama I’ve ever seen before. Gossip Girl was boring. Back to You was nothing new, and I didn’t watch the other show.
