So Say We All: How I Met Your Mother, Heroes, Journeyman

November 20, 2007 by

It’s been a while since we’ve had a ‘so say we all’. Why? Because I’m a very inconsistent blogger who starts these little things and then forgets all about them. Well, there was a lot of TV happening last night, and rather than rant about all of it, here’s my two cents on what I watched and then I’m turning it over to YOU.

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER

Why, why, why does this show not get more recognition? It’s such an amazing comedy and I think it’s right up there with THE OFFICE and 30 ROCK. I love ENTOURAGE and UGLY BETTY but neither one of those shows can hold a comedic candle to HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER yet it never gets the love. Anyway, last night we had a classic Slapsgiving Day episode. Oh wait, I meant Thanksgiving. Ted & Robin tried to navigate their non-friendship only to find themselves back in bed. Can’t these two just get back together already? Robin isn’t very interesting without Ted. And it’s clear that Ted still loves Robin. If we ever meet the kids ‘real’ mother, I think I’m going to hate her.

But Ted & Robin weren’t the story last night. Nope. Last night was all about the slap!! With the slapcountodwn slowly ticking down until 3:01pm, a nervous Barney did all he could to convince Marshall that the slap really wasn’t necessary on Thanksgiving. Slap Bet Commissioner Lily agreed and called a moratorium on slapping for the holiday. Marshall was bummed (me too). But lucky for all of us, Barney’s gloating bated Lily enough that she lifted the respite with one second left on the clock, and Marshall’s slap left Barney on the floor. And as every Slapsgiving should, the night ended with a song around the piano. (Check out the music video for “You Just Got Slapped”)

For those of you who have no idea what the Slap Bet is, take a minute to check this out.

Let’s talk about HEROES & JOURNEYMAN after the jump…

HEROES

All around a pretty good episode. I didn’t think it was as fantastic as the past two weeks, but I’ll take an episode of HEROES that doesn’t put me to sleep as a good thing. Last night’s focus was on the dear Bennett family. After discovering that HRG had kidnapped West when he was a boy, Claire rebelled and told her parents that she refused to leave Costa Verde with them. Later Bob found Claire at cheerleading practice (I found the uniforms particularly slutty, no?) and revealed himself as part of The Company by calling Claire by her true last name. West confronted HRG about Claire’s intentions and later helped his past captor when they found out Bob had kidnapped Claire. An eye for an eye, or a daughter for a daughter, HRG kidnapped Elle. And did anyone love the scene when he tied up Elle and put her in a pool of water so she couldn’t use her powers? Awesome! Kristen Bell plays Elle as so sweetly demented that she captures my full attention whenever she is on screen. So the daughters are exchanged, but a battle ensues and once again Issac’s paintings prove to be true as Mohinder shoots HRG in the eye and kills him. But all hope is not lost. The last scene pulls back to reveal HRG receiving Claire’s healing blood as his eye heals and he’s brought back to life. But who saved him? Is he so valuable that Bob would want to save his life? Is Bob perhaps not as shady as once thought? Oh and I’m working on a theory that perhaps Adam is Nathan’s real father and that’s how his healing blood was passed to Claire. I haven’t full thought it through though.

And in other Heroes news, Hiro goes back in time to try to save his father from being murdered. His father doesn’t want him to mess with what was meant to be. Hiro agrees not to save him, but he stops time enough to discover that it was Sark aka Takeo Kinsei aka Adam that kills Kaito Nakamura. Dun dun dun! Oh and Matt can not only read people’s minds but can also force thoughts into their heads. Hey Parkman, why don’t you use those powers to get the AMPTP to give the writers the money they want so we can get back to this television season?

So, Heroes….are we feeling good about where this is going?

JOURNEYMAN

I had a little JOURNEYMAN marathon last night and caught up on the past 2 episodes. See the show comes on so late that I’m usually asleep within the first few minutes. It’s what happens when you get old. Anyway, I’m still completely loving this show. But, much like Katie, I’m starting to get really frustrated by the lack of answers about Dan’s time traveling abilities. I’m also a little frustrated that we haven’t learned any more about what Livia has to do with all of this. Dan’s whole family is falling apart, and he seems more concerned with solving the cases than trying to figure out how to stop all of this. With every episode I’m liking Jack more and more. I’m hoping he will be clued in on Dan’s “illness” pretty soon so he can start to help him out in the present. Last night’s case of the kidnapped girls was interesting, but not nearly as interesting as next week when (SPOILER ALERT) Zach is kidnapped and Dan is shot. And was that Livia confronting Jack in 2007? I can’t wait!! Please tell me I’m not the only one loving JOURNEYMAN?

And that’s all I have to say about that! Your turn. What did you think of last night’s television. And what else did you watch that I didn’t talk about (besides CHUCK because that show is getting its own post in just a bit)? It’s been a long couple of days and I’m so ready to talk with you people so let’s get to it.

I only watched HIMYM and Samantha Who last night. Loved HIMYM – another classic Thanksgiving episode! I felt the same as you GMMR – at the end of the episode with them all around the piano – saying Happy Slapsgiving – I was thinking how funny the show is and how none of my friends are watching it! It was a great episode. I loved Ted and Robin’s inside joke, and how by the end of the episode Marshall said something like “I guess we’re all doing this now, eh?” So funny.

I am also loving Samantha Who…always keeps my interest and I’m disappointed when I miss an episode. I like her and Brian Watson – can’t wait for their characters to get back together.

Tivo’d Chuck – will watch it tonight. 🙂

I missed HIMYM!!! I usually record that on the VCR upstairs becaus eit conflicts with Prison Break and Chuck, but without Prison Break I figured it would just record. WRONG! My season pass got erased somehow. And I can’t watch it online! What to do?!?!?

Heroes was good, but Elle is still annoying me. Less than in past weeks, but I just don’t like her much. (Again, sorry – I know there are great fans of hers – I am just not one of them…) I was a little intrigued by HRG getting saved because all spoilers seemend to point to his actual death.

I’ve been watching Journeyman also, and my thoughts are along the same line. I’m about ready for a ‘why’ to be revealed, and for Jack to find out the truth. The glimpse into next week actually gave me the chills. Boy that guy is creepy!

And I am anxiously awaiting your Chuck post because while I think the show is awesome, and I have always thought Chuck was a cutie, DAMN those were some hot kisses! :0) I don’t know which girl I am rooting for more there!

Heroes was great last night. I am loving these faster paced episodes. I think Mohinder might have saved HRG…I don’t think Bob would do it. I am scared about Matt’s new power. He could easily become a bad guy. I mean he used it on Molly and he really didn’t need to.

Now I am waiting for the Chuck post…

I LOVED last nights heroes! Just loved it. I didn’t think I was possible for me to love HRG more, but last night proved me wrong. It was really just a great all around episode. Matt’s new mind control powers are interesting as well–I am always intrigued by the darker side of these power uses. OH-and how great was the ending? A shout out to season 1? “Holy—-” 🙂 I never gave up on this show, I think its still fantastic. (YAY writers….lets end this strike soon so we don’t miss too much!)

Last night’s TV was excellent (haven’t gotten around to Chuck yet).
I don’t want Robin and Ted to get back together (would feel like a waste of time to me), but I like how she called him on having a new hottie every episode this season. Bob was funny too.
Next week’s Journeyman looks pretty sweet. I wish it got better ratings.
And I personally felt Heroes’ ep was the best so far this season. Watching Parkman use his powers in morally gray ways was intriguing. And any episode focusing on HRG and Claire is bound to be good (“Company Man” anyone?). And with this many characters, I’m glad they’ll ignore even main ones if there just isn’t room. Let’s make a list of everyone missing from the episode: the twins (no complaint), Sylar, Nikki, Micah, Monica, Peter, and Nathan.

I really enjoyed this ep of Heroes, but probably because watching it without the commercials gives me Season one nostalgia.

Did you catch the Veronica Mars reference with the “rainbows and unicorns”?

  8. Give Me My Remote on November 20th, 2007 4:34 pm

Yes yes yes!! I actually made a note of it last night, but in my cold-medicine induced haze I completely forgot to mention it. You were all unicorns and rainbows…I loved it!

Heroes: I thought this was the best episode of the season–much more like last year when we had twists, turns and resolution to smaller storylines.

I’ve warmed up to Elle. Now that I see she’s slightly demented, I like her cockiness and swagger.

I still wince whenever West is on. His acting is stilted. Some of the lines he utters sound more like reading than talking. And his devotion to Claire is a bit over the top.

The season started with so many new characters, it seems they needed several episodes to introduce and explain what was going on. Now we’re getting meat to chew on–yay! I don’t think it’s a surprise that the reason for Heroes being so good lately is that they’re focusing on original characters who we know and love. They could immediately kill off the twins and the copycat girl and I’d hardly notice. Or care.

Journeyman is my favorite new show, right up there with Chuck. If there’s any good to come from the strike it’s that it is getting a chance to grow and develop that it wouldn’t have gotten otherwise. It has completely sucked me in, and I look forward to it as much as any other show I watch outside of The Office. Kevin McKidd is awesome and both his wives are hot. (Yes, I’m shallow, I know. Sorry) I love the way the writers are showing how his life would be affected in every way by his time travels. Yes, it’s a far-fetched sci-fi premise, but they don’t shy away from exploring how it would affect his wfe, his kid, his job and all that.

I too loved the Veronica Mars reference and when Noah put Elle in the water. I knew she’d use her powers not thinking about it. That was very stupid of her. Last year, I wouldn’t have cared if Noah died, but I’m glad he’s not still dead. I wonder when his family will find out he’s alive.

I love HIMYM and don’t get why people won’t watch it. I’ll get people to watch an episode every once in a while, but they don’t watch it regularly. I loved the Slapsgiving episode and the song was great. I’m thinking HIMYM is another show that needs a few seasons to catch on kind of like Scrubs was if I remember correctly.

I loved Chuck and was shocked that Bryce was still alive. I wonder who froze him.

I quit watching Journeyman. I liked the first few episodes, but I’m not really liking the wife or the brother and the last couple I haven’t really cared much for. Maybe it’s too slow paced for answers or maybe I’m just impatient.

  12. jenn on November 20th, 2007 6:59 pm

HIMYM-one of the best ever! NPH is amazing-where is this man’s emmy? I will be saving this episode on the DVR: hi-larious!

I gave up in Heroes and Journeyman a few weeks ago. Nothing ever seemed to happen and I was sort of bored.

LOVE LOVE LOVE Chuck! Can’t wait to see what happens but I’m also torn because we have so few episodes left. I can’t believe Zach Levi was Kip on “Less than Perfect”–I could not stand him on that show (which I guess means he did a good job) and I think I love Chuck at least as much as Jim Halpert.
    Nerd Power!

  13. christy on November 20th, 2007 10:20 pm

I thought Heroes was good, and I am enjoying the shows that don’t have the pointless twins and the copycat girl

Journeyman is my new favorite show, and I am hoping the mystery behind his time travels continues on, as the mystery is part of why I am interested in the show. I am afraid if they give us some scientific experiement reason or something about why he time travels I will lose interest.

Havent watched Chuck yet, as it is on my DVR waiting for me since I chose to watch HIMYM last night…with was great! I love this show and I love Robin and Ted’s inside joke 🙂

  14. Patty on November 21st, 2007 4:13 am

It’s 2am and I am caught up! HIMYM was pretty good. I have S2 coming from Netflix. I have only seen eps here and there and am excited about seeing everything from the beginning.

Heroes – is back! It was slow going there for wahile but i am back on the train. I can’t wait to see what happens this next two weeks. Sad that the strike is cutting this season so short.

I too was behind on Journeyman but I watched both last week and this week together and liked them both. While it’s not my favorite new show (that goes to Moonlight) it’s still on the DVR and I paln on hanging on til the end. I am torn beween wanting to know what the deal is and just watching the mess unfold slowly.

  15. Mike on November 21st, 2007 3:47 pm

    HIMYM, Journeyman, Chuck, Heroes.

    What are my favorite shows?!

Maybe it’s CBS, maybe it’s just early in the shows run, I don’t know but the show definitely should be receiving more hype. Last night was one of those episodes you keep on the DVR for a long time and one you look forward to seeing both on the DVD (imagine the extras!) and when the show goes to syndication.

I’m not interested in getting exact explanations about how Dan and Livia travel through time in Journeyman, but it seems as if the show is stretching how much time they can go before Jack is clued in. So that part of the previews held the most interest for me. Can’t wait.

Heroes is picking up speed and hopefully finding the spots that work and those that don’t (tired of the wonder twins). I would guess it was Mohinder who helped HRG. I would expect HRG to be underground working against the company and not revealed alive to his family for a while.

Good reviews, GMMR. Thanks for the slap links!

  16. Ryan on November 22nd, 2007 12:45 am

I like journeyman a lot as well. Only downfall of the show is Dan’s wife–not a very good actor. Other then that every episode has an interesting story and then there’s the huge story arc of “why exactly is all this happening?”.

Its the quickest hour of tv for me. Before I know the episode is over.

  17. Cindy on November 26th, 2007 12:21 pm

Journeyman hands down. I love this show. It’s has all these layers, scifi, well acted drama, great characters that evolve with every episode, mystery, family relationships and romance even) that I totally want to know more about.
I disagree with Ryan–I think Dan’s wife is an awesome actress. All of the actors are great! I wish more people would give it a chance!
It’s so much better than a lot of the ubiquitous CSI’s out there.

I think a lot of people wont give it a chance because they write it off as another Quantum Leap, it’s a slower pace than Heroes, or it’s shown too late… I say give it a chance!!

    It’s a great “grown-up” scifi drama.
