QUARTERLIFE – New Show Alert!

Oh, where to begin with this one? I’m sure that you guys have heard the rumors that CHUCK won’t be back until the fall, and this probably makes you very sad because you will miss either a.) the chance that you might see that sex bomb Adam Baldwin (bet you didn’t know that was his full name, did you?) OR b.) the guaranteed weekly chick fight between Sarah and another spy with an impossibly hot ass, AND c.) you will miss my recaps. Shut up! You will TOTALLY miss them!

Except now, if you are willing to get on board with a new show with me, you will not have to. I am going to take on recapping QUARTERLIFE, which will air on NBC on the night of February 26, which is a Tuesday. It’ll move to its regular Sunday night timeslot on March 2. I’m not sure of the times, but I’m sure Kath will “What to Watch” it when we get close, so KEEP YOUR PANTS ON! (Which, by the way, is actually good advice in most all situations.)

As some of you who have been with me from the beginning know, I like to know as little as possible going in to shows that I hope to fall madly in love with, partially to avoid prejudice but also because I enjoy the anticipation. I do, however, know a few things, and those few things are enough to make me excited, and I will now share them with you.

  • First of all, the people responsible for this show are the same ones who brought us My So-Called Life. People, I cannot even BEGIN to tell you how much love I still harbor for that show. So classic. Let’s put it this way—one day on my blog, I posted a list of things that I felt were staples of the teenage girl experience of my generation (and I’m 27, by the way). There were a few debatables, but no one could deny MSCL. It was just that good.
  • Secondly, this show is coming to us from the Internet. I believe it’s been airing in eight minute increments, but I do know that it’s going to be condensed into six hour-long episodes. Why does this excite me? Because this seems like a great, grass-roots type of thing to happen, and I love the thought that talent and substance and solid content are being valued.
  • Third, and probably most important, the premise sounds awesome. It’s a girl in her mid-20’s keeping a video blog. Now, I don’t video blog, but I am an extremely avid blogger, so … HELLO, art imitating life! While I think the promise of discussing “personal moments” sounds a little Sex in the City, I trust these guys to keep it real.
  • Finally, not to be forgotten, there is a major part of me that loves some angst. Felicity, Freaks and Geeks, The Office, high school-era Dawson’s Creek, even in some ways Smallville … all angsty. But angst is like Jell-O—I always have room for more!

So who’s in? And by the way, in case I have made this sound too girly (given that I am, in fact, a girl), I would just like to say to the guys—don’t be afraid! There are dudes behind this and I never felt like My So-Called Life veered into super-gross-girly-girl territory. You’ll be fine, and I’m sure the video blogger is a hot babe, who, granted, may not be literally kicking ass and taking names like our favorite CIA agent, but who may in a different sense still kick some ass. Who knows? But I will be there to find out and you should be too.

Unfortunately, I watched most of it online in research for an article and was pretty disappointed. I’m a huge fan MSCL and Once & Again (also from the folks behind MSCL), but MSCL was like magic captured in a bottle. This show is, sadly, nowhere near as good.
