THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES: “Dungeons & Dragons”

February 19, 2008 by

Is it possible that I loved last night’s episode of TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES without really knowing what was going on?  At times I was utterly confused about elements of the many flash forwards, but on the whole I thought the episode kicked a little ass. So many questions are raised about the development of Skynet and just what is happening in the future to what’s left of humanity.  And what’s up with Cameron?  Is she going to go all toaster on us and double cross the Connor’s?

I’ll admit that my knowledge of time travel is pretty much based on the “Back to the Future” franchise.  But I do know that if you go back in time and you alter history, then the future is impacted.  So riddle me this…if Derek came back from the future and killed Andy Goode, then how was Andy still alive during those flash forwards? Even if Derek was flash forwarding to the time before he came back to kill Andy, wouldn’t Andy still not exist because at some point in the past Derek killed him?  Holy lord I think I have a headache.  Anyway, I really didn’t understand most of that last night, so if someone could throw me a bone and explain it to me that would be nice.

While you’re at it, if you have any theories on just what was happening in the underground room with all the music, feel free to share.  I thought maybe the robots were reading the humans’ memories or something, but I really don’t have much of a clue.  Was that something that was maybe in the “Terminator” movies?  Any thoughts?

What in H-E- double hockey sticks is going on with Cameron?  There were a few tells last night that indicated that our little SheBot is going to turn on John and Sarah sometime in the future.  I mean, what’s up with her keeping that bolt from the Terminator endoskeleton when she clearly stated herself that every single part must be destroyed? That on its own was bad enough, but juxtaposed with Future!Cameron’s declaration that “Sometimes they go bad. We don’t know why” added all kinds of dimension to her already layered storyline.

I’m a big fan of the return of Charlie (even if he wasn’t selling beepers).  It seems he never got over Sarah, and Sarah was clearly in love with him if she was trusting him with most of her secrets about her and Josh.  Knowing what he knows, I’m assuming that he’ll be killed by Cromartie, but I don’t think he’ll give Sarah and John up.

Major kudos to Brian Austin Green for rocking his role as Derek Reese so much that I never once though of West Beverly High, Donna Martin or Scott Scanlon with a gun. Impressive. And a personal thrill for me was seeing Jonathan Jackson in the role of Kyle Reese.  I used to have a big thing for this kid back in my soap days when he played Lucky Spencer, son of Luke and Laura on General Hospital.  I always thought the guy was a good actor but he never really made it.

So a lot went down last night, and even if I didn’t understand everything, I thought it was a really intriguing and engaging episode.  Probably my favorite to date.  I’m still shocked I’m into this show as much as I am.  I guess I’m now one of those Summer Glau groupies.

Did you watch?  What did you think of last night’s episode?

I loved loved loved this episode! It’s all I wanted this series to be and Brain Austin Green? If I can’t have Micheal Biehn? He’ll do in a pinch.

As for the confusion, I can understand it you haven’t seen the first Terminator movie a hundred times like me. There were lots of references to it (which I found cool as shit!) Keep in mind, Derek wasn’t having flash forwards, those were flashbacks for him. And just because you change one thing doesn’t mean you change the inevitable. I don’t think anyone can actually stop Skynet. And doomsday will always happen. They only change how and when.

I am loving this show to peices. I think paired with 24 would be a super high octane Monday!

I had a fangirl moment when Jonathan Jackson came on the screen! I really didn’t know what was going on most of the time, either.

We were just seeing the future the way Derek knew it before he went back and changed it. Now that he traveled back, he already exists in the past so he will remember the future the way it was as he knew it. Those are his memories.

I find the best thing to do with time travel is to just not think about it — too many paradoxes otherwise. The biggest flaw is that if they do stop Skynet, then it wouldn’t have created any time portals, and Future John would never have sent Kyle Reese back to protect his mother and thus he never would have been born. So that’s why I just sit back and enjoy the ride. 🙂

Cameron also kept some of the metal from the fourth episode (“Heavy Metal”). And the bolt isn’t just a bolt — it’s the CPU of that Terminator. So the real question is what does River… I mean Cameron… really have planned? What’s her real mission?

I believe-because of the whole time paradox thing- that when they send someone back in time (like derek) who then changes the future, but not HIS, he has lived his life up until now, but he has altered the universe in which he lived and has created a different path for the one he is in now….OTHERWISE, if they stop skynet, then there’s no kyle reese going to the past which equals no John Connor or Sarah Connor as we know her…THEREFORE, all the work they have done to stop skynet will be nulled…I know its confusing, but it’s the only way I can wrap my head around it…
