BREAKING NEWS: NBC to Renew FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS!!!

This just in exclusively from Nikki Finke at DeadlineHollywoodDaily.

EXCLUSIVE: NBC Picking Up ‘Friday Night Lights’ After Partnering On It With DirecTV

This is great news to that small but passionate audience for the best TV series you’re not watching. I’m told that Jeff Zucker, Marc Graboff and Ben Silverman had been searching for a way to pick up the critically acclaimed but low-rated Friday Night Lights that would still make financial sense. The answer came in a deal with DirecTV, now owned by John Malone’s Liberty Media. Clearly Malone is looking to offer exclusive content to his satellite subscribers to distinguish DirecTV from its rivals on a content basis as well as price. “It’s an innovative deal where NBC found a partner who will share costs and exhibition windows,” an insider explained to me. I’m a big fan of FNL so I say hooray.

I’ve got to say that this news has more than made my day. At first I was a bit confused by the wording and I thought perhaps was being picked up just for DirectTV subscribers, but the more I thought about it, that didn’t make any sense.

Wow, this is going to make the FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS panel at the Paley Festival in a few weeks a LOT more interesting.

CLEAR EYES. FULL HEARTS. CAN’T LOSE.

I was just coming over here to see if you knew yet! I’ve never watched the show but I am super happy!

Yes! I’m not a petition-signer or a write-in viewer, but the fact that they were going to get rid of FNL changed me. It deserves to be on television. I’m going to go and rewatch the first season now!

This is great news! I’m not too clear on DirecTV’s part in all of this but hopefully everyone will be able to view it like you said!

I was late to the FNL and loved the first season watching it on netflix. Second season there has been a bit of a drop off, but these last view episodes I think they found their swing again.

I’m hoping they might finish up the second season and go right into the third now that NBC doesn’t follow a traditional schedule.

From the way I interpret it, I think the it sounds like it IS only for just DirecTV subscribers, since it talked about having exclusive content to “distinguish DirecTV from its rivals.”
Or what did you think it meant? I don’t think it will still be on NBC will it? Is there any other reportings of this on other sites (maybe with a clearer description of what actually is happening with the show).
Even if I’m reading it correctly, I’m guessing though that they will still end up on the internet in one form or another (though maybe we’ll have to by them from Amazon Unbox or wherever, rather than get them for me).

  12. Give Me My Remote on March 6th, 2008 12:40 am

Billiam – The way I see it, it really wouldn’t make financial set to keep the show going just for DirectTV subscribers.

    Wow, you responded really fast.

Here’s another link. The author figured the show would air first on DirectTV and then on NBC. That would make more sense.

Yeah, I’m up late tonight and online.

Per the TV Guide post – that would be fine by me. I mean if someone has DirectTV and chooses to spoil the show for me I will throw down, but as long as it airs new eps and I can see them, it’s all good with me.

    RIGGINS! RIGGINS!

Oh. My. Good. God. This is such great news, I thought we may have seen the last of Dillon TX – I’m so glad it’s not!!

  17. Mandy on March 6th, 2008 1:46 am

Yes!! I’ve been suffering from the flu bug most of the week, and this has helped me feel a bit better. More Saracen! More Riggins! More Coach Taylor! More of the pure awesomeness that is Tami Taylor! Yay!!!!!

  18. kilwiggle7 on March 6th, 2008 2:18 am

I literally squealed with joy when I first found out…. I can’t wait to call my sister in the AM with the great news. so deserving of another season and I can’t wait to see my Saracen again!!!

  19. Shannon on March 6th, 2008 10:14 am

I’m hoping & praying that this “deal” between NBC & DirecTV includes the show to be aired on NBC (or some NBC affiliate like Bravo or USA or something), because otherwise this doesn’t do me any good. I had DirecTV in the past and had nothing but problems with it and won’t ever get it again. Plus it would cost me too much to get out of my cable contract anyways.

  20. Ryan on March 6th, 2008 10:18 am

Not only is The Office cast returning to work today but now I find out that FNL is renewed for next year! This is the best day of this very long winter I’ve been through! 🙂 I hope they air the episodes first on NBC (or an affiliate) before Direct TV because I would hate to miss out on its first airing, but I agree that as long as it stays on the air and I eventually get to see new episodes, I really don’t care how it works out! This has totally made my week and makes up (almost) for missing new episodes the rest of this season.

OK, though I’m in Argentina, and here we’re just in the middle of the second season, I just wanted to say that this is the greatest news I’ve had in a long time. I’m a die hard fan of the Dillon Panthers, and honestly with so many great shows that were cancelled over the years (Pasadena, John Doe, etc…), I just can’t take another loss. Thank you so much to whoever took this desition… 😀
