BIG BANG is Unravelable and Britney is Unwatchable

March 25, 2008 by

CBS is the place to be on Monday night if you just want to kick back and laugh. Yeah, I said it – CBS! The one-two punch of THE BIG BANG THEORY and HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER is an unstoppable block of comedy creeping in on the funny territory owned by another network on another night (hint – the night begins with ‘Thur’ and ends in ‘day’).

The Big Bang Theory

Hopefully I’ve pestered you enough that you’re finally giving THE BIG BANG THEORY a shot. If not, I might just have to take Sheldon’s approach of knocking incessantly on your bedroom door at 4am (now if you saw last night’s episode that didn’t sound nearly as creepy). Not only is THE BIG BANG THEORY a hysterical half hour of comedy, but there are lessons to be learned as well. For instance, last night we learned not to lie…or if you are going to lie make sure it’s unravelable. Even if you tell a little lie to spare a friend’s feelings it might lead to finding a former MIT drama major, who may or may not have been abused in the Philippines by a chaplain with a club foot, in your kitchen pretending to be a drug addict who is also a middle child with a genetic predisposition to inadequate serotonin production. So really, just don’t lie.

My love for all things Sheldon continues. Give the show a shot. Watch it during lunch on CBS.com

How I Met Your Mother
Britney Spears on HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER
Is the ‘Oops she did it again’ joke played out? How about ‘oops she sucketh again’? Yeah, I’m sure a few have used that in the past too. The long awaited (and by long awaited I mean the whole two week wait) for Britney Spears’ appearance on HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER left me cringing. I think my expectations were set a wee bit high. I kind of thought she would be a natural, but clearly I was wrong. Talk about overacting! I thought Britney was near unwatchable in what was otherwise a fantastic, sweet and charming episode. I guess whatever actings chops Ms. Spears had from her Mickey Mouse Club days were washed away by the booze and the Lufti. And not even ONE Britney Spears is a train wreck joke? Not even from Barney?

Enough with the Britney, last night’s episode was all about the Chalke – Sarah Chalke that is. The SCRUBS star was spot on in her role as Ted’s new dermatological love interest. I think it was just last week that I was cursing the day we actually found out who the mother of Ted’s children is, and now I’m begging for it to be Sarah Chalke. Her chemistry with Josh Radnor (Ted Mosby) was hot, hot, hot. And it’s quite plausible that she is in fact the mother. With HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER on the bubble, the writers have certainly set her up to be ‘the one’ in case of cancellation. She did mention that she was at a St. Patrick’s Day party but left early. We know that the Future Ted Mosby also spent St. Paddy’s Day at a party, the same one Ted attended. Was anyone else searching her office for a yellow umbrella like I was?

Oh and it was good to see the ‘real’ Ted Mosby back last night. Let’s hope his trashy, womanizing ways disappeared along with the butterfly tramp stamp.

Did you catch either of these shows last night? Favorite moments? Was I too hard on Brit Brit?

Well, at the risk of you banging down my door I will say that I do not watch Big Bang Theory (ducks), but your view of HIMYM was spot on. Britney was a wreck, the lowest point of a great show. I am so glad Sarah Chalke took that role instead of Alicia Silverstone because I thought she was incredible. Total chemistry, and I was hoping she was the mother too (and totally caught the St. Patty’s thing…) Can’t wait to see her back!

I know its unlikely that Stella is the mom (due to SC’s ‘other’ show), but I want her to be. I loved that episode.
    (and Britney? eh)

Sheldon with the chicken was killing me. Totally right about Sarah Chalke. I was hoping it’s her too.

I had to tivo BBT, but HIMYM was ok…great storyline (ok – only storyline!)….Sarah Chalke was so natural and really fit in with the show. Would love to see her in more scenes with Barney! We know this is Scrubs’ last season, so maybe she can transition to HIMYM after this year?

And Britney – I didn’t think she was a train wreck…but certainly not very natural. She had a ton of scenes! I wouldn’t say she ruined the episode, but I will say she didn’t add to it.

I also watched Christine – which I enjoyed, but not as much as last weeks. Yahoo – CBS Monday nights!! 🙂

Ted has the yellow umbrella now so it wouldn’t be in Stella’s office. I kept wanting it to be raining during one of his sessions so he could just walk in with it.

I think your totally right about Britney Spears, she added nothing to the show. Barney and Marshal were as usual awesome. Lilly and Robin really had nothing to do, and Ted was back to his loveable self.

No need to search her office for the yellow umbrella — Ted has it. He picked up the umbrella when he went back to the club to find his cell phone.

Britney is a terrible actress, but hopefully her appearance did what it needed to do: draw people in to watch a really great show. While Britney sucked, she wasn’t too overpowering. I really loved the Ted/Stella story. The 2-minute date made me melt and fall in love with Ted all over again. I really hope any people that watched just to see BS instead saw how awesome this show is. It breaks my heart that it hasn’t been renewed yet!

Well, at the end someone was wearing a yellow dress and had a yellow bag… (hint: it’s not Stella)

Well my expectations were really low for Brit (i still had her Will & Grace appearance running through my head) … so I thought she didn’t do that badly. Yes she overacted, but she did a lot better than I expected. She even made me laugh. I think that how people viewed her performance probably had a lot to do with what they expected to see. GMMR, you said your expectations were high, so you were disappointed … me, my expectations were really low so I was pleasantly surprised.

(an off topic p.s.: when are we going to hear your take on the buffy paley panel?)

I completely disagree about Britney, I thought she was great last night! HIMYM isn’t exactly a show full of stellar actors, so I thought her mediocre acting fit right in. And i’m by no means a Britney fan, but i’d rather see her doing things like this than being hospitalized anyday.

Frankly, I was just happy to see Britney wearing makeup and looking nice. Is she a natural actress? Absolutely not. However, considering her personal life being in shambles, I kind of liked seeing her do something respectable. I’m still remembering Crossroads, so really acting-wise, this was definitely a step up.

The rest of the episode was sheer perfection.

She spoke in coherent sentences. It was so sweet. I wanted to cry…

Finally someone who agrees with me. I’ve been searching the blog-o-sphere and had begun to question my sanity. I couldn’t stand Spears last night. From her first delivery she was awful. I’m pretty sure her character wasn’t supposed to be a bad actress playing a secretary. If I’m wrong and it was, then she did a fantastic job, otherwise it was just gruelling.

Loved the 2-minute date. Loved the Re-Return of Ranjit during the 2 minute date.

But the thing I loved the most that no one seems to comment on was Marshall & Lily. Ted asks who knows what they want for lunch 10 weeks from now to which Marshall responded “Sloppy Joe, Shrimp Cocktail, and a milkshake” And 10 weeks later thats exactly what he was eating. And Lily’s nails were hilarious.

I’m throwing my hat into the ‘Britney actually wasn’t that bad’ ring. For all the hype over the appearance, she actually had a rather small part in the episode, and while it’s true that I wouldn’t exactly call her line readings natural, I actually thought that that added to the eccentricity of her character. My issue was the episode was that there was no B-plot, and therefore the gang wasn’t really involved. I think that the show tends to do better when it jumps around from story to story. But A) it’s good to have the show back and B) all the Britney publicity delivered 10 million+ viewers, which is their highest numbers this season, so hopefully season 4’s future is a little more secure now.

Ranjit rocked it. That’s all I have to say there.

Overall, it was one of the better eps this season as I’ve not really been feeling it yet.

I don’t think that Stella is the wife but I think she’s somehow involved with it.

Last but not least, Britney was not brilliant. She filled a role that any aspiring actress needing some screen time deserved. It was not believable.
