Jason Castro Singing “Memory” (Watch)

April 22, 2008 by

For those of you who were really digging Jason Castro’s version of the Cats classic, “Memory” here’s the video for you to watch over and over again. Face it…you can’t get enough of the baby blues.

I was a little torn by Jason’s performance tonight. One on hand I thought his rendition of what is perhaps one of the most famous Broadway songs of the past 20 years was daring because it was so different than the original. But on the other hand I almost felt like Jason didn’t really take the time to embrace the essence of the original song and just tried to put his musical spin on the lyrics and melody. While I liked his interpretation of “Memory” I can’t say that I was blown away by it.

No doubt about it – Jason is a talented guy and I think he will really go far after this competition. I know exactly who he is going to be as an artist and I’m glad that he really hasn’t strayed from that. I thought his voice was pretty, sweet and vulnerable tonight, and I definitely didn’t think it was the trainwreck that Randy said it was, but it also wasn’t a stand out performance for me.

I realize I am being 100% contradictory on my review of his performance. Here I am saying that I like that Jason has a consistent sound, yet on the same note I think he’s becoming a bit too predictable. Glad I’m not one of the judges (although I wouldn’t mind their paychecks for a week).

Talk to me about Jason’s performance tonight. Were you digging it? On the fence like me? Or did you flat out hate it?

I love Jason Castros voice, his unique talent and the way he can emotionally draw his audience in.
I dont think “Memory” was the best song choice for him. But I did hear he was really sick all week???
I base my decision to stick as a Castro fan on all of his other performances and the fact that I will by his Cd’s.
He has a different style and I love hearing him sing.
Others have had “bad” nights and are still on the show.
So I stick by Jason Castro. I cant wait until his Cd’s are for sale.

I love Jason Castro. I like someone who sings with feeling. I thought his rendition of Memory was good. It wasn’t a bad performance just because Jason sang it different. I think the judges should be looking for someone unique. I am a singer myself. Jason is unique and always true to himself. This is the way he wants to sing. Soft, tender, and with great feeling. I will buy every CD he has.

I just love Jason Castro! I thought he did a great job when this clearly isn’t his style of music. His pre-performance interview was hilarious. I loved the fact that he didn’t know Memory was sung by a cat and that Andrew Lloyd Webber said he wouldn’t be surprised if he ignored every suggestion he made. Jason knows who he is as a artist and won’t conform!!! I hope Syesha goes home this week .

After his performance I turned to my fiance and said “wow he’s done it again” and I still believe it despite what the judges said. Who in their right mind would do Memory!?! Yet, he did and it was great. He is what he is and they need to see that. Cook is still my favorite and I hope he get 2nd (all the press without the commitments 😉 I think Jason has a great future in this business!

I love to hear Jason sing, he gives a unique touch to any song ever written. He is also so natural. He is not trying to impress any body. In AI website there is a video with the contestants talking about been cool and he says with his genuine smile “I’ve never been cool”. In this times where there is so much peer pressure. What a better Idol for my kids that somebody like him. I can wait to buy his music and I hope he’ll sing in Spanish as well.

I thought it was among his best performances, because even though, might have been vocally a couple problems in a few places, his voice was sounding stronger here that it does sometimes. I think that this, and, when he sang Hallelujah were among his best performances. I kind of liked him earlier in the season, but thought his voice a little weak, and performances a bit boring and amateurish, and not of the caliber to make it this far in a competition like this, but, here, I still feel like vocally, this is the direction he needs to go in if he can pull it off and improve vocally, (it was by no means a train wreck, as Randy said), otherwise, his singing might remain a little weak and boring. I think he was taking Andrew Loyd Weber’s advice and putting a lot of himself into it, and giving it a good shot here. I would give it a pretty solid 7 1/2 on a 1 to 10.
