Weeds is bitingly funny; it’s crude but somehow not indecent humour. It’s not saccharine when it comes to portrayals of family (Celia Hodes continually makes fun of her daughter’s weight), yet there is a “heart” to the show through the Botwin and Conrad’s family. The children are smart and fully developed characters unto themselves. It has great social commentary that isn’t a ‘hit-you-over-the-head’ kind of message. Nancy Botwin is a fearless woman yet somehow still quite likeable and vulnerable. It’s absurd in parts, without being over-the-top. Weeds has the best use of music in any show I’ve ever seen (often for comedic effect rather than melodrama) and if you’re singing “Little Boxes” after a few episodes, something is wrong with you.*

*Each episode starts with a different version of the theme song, ranging in musical styles/genres and languages.

How’s that for getting you to watch it? It’s one of my favourite shows on TV.

this is quite possibly the best show I’ve ever seen from cable television. It’s edgy, smart, and while it is about marijuana it does it with a sense of class, and not sleaze.

    Smoking weed = illegal

Watching Weeds = Legal (and enjoyable!)

I like the chance the network took with this show. I like to see how Nancy is dealing with whatever life throws her way. In some weird way she’s a role model to women. Not saying that selling/growing marijuana is necessarily a great career path for anyone, but she’s doing what she can to get by and take care of her family. That, and it’s freakin hilarious!

Yikes. that above should read “if you *AREN’T* singing “Little Boxes” after a few episodes, something is wrong with you.*

My husband and I love this show! We’ve never had Showtime, but we were hooked from the time we rented the first DVD of Season 1. We can’t wait for Season 3 to arrive in stores!

“Little boxes…on the hillside…little boxes made of ticky tacky…”

Weeds is worth watching because of its ridiculous absurdity and because the show has no shame in tackling any and all political, social, and religious issues and doing its best to help make them less taboo. Plus, Nancy Botwin is a fantastic character…everything she does should make her unlikable and yet you constantly root for her. And everything Kevin Nelon says and does is just hysterical. If you are a fan of quirky, dry humor you’ll enjoy Weeds.

Two words. Kevin Nealon. Two more. Justin Kirk.

Weeds is the only reason I have cable, great show!!! Nancy rocks!

  10. Michele on June 19th, 2008 5:24 pm

We’ve caught up with it through Netflix – it is a seriously awesome show! Kevin Nealon steals every scene he is in as abso-frickin-lutely hilarious. It is such a clever mix of humor, and totally off the wall, almost horrifying, but somehow believable reality that you can’t help but be intrigued by it. I’ve bought season 1 & 2 already, but we are still dealing with Netflix for season 3. (Just subscribed to Showtime to start tivoing season 4 for when we catch up…) Wouldn’t these dvds round out my collection nicely? :0)

I’ve seen one episode of Weeds, and I have to say that I absolutely loved it. I would have never thought that a show with a subject like this could be so funny and so heartwrenching at the same time! (And I got this all from watching just one episode!) More people should subscribe to Showtime because they have such awesome shows! I’m completely addicted to Dexter, and all the episodes of Weeds and Californication are on my To-do list!

I’ve been watching Weeds all along, it hooked me from the first episode. It’s simultaneously hilarious, touching, outrageous and smart. The only bad thing I can say about it regards the decision to lose some great characters this season (including the smoking hot Conrad and feisty Heylia). I definitely encourage everybody to catch up on all 3 seasons on dvd and watch the current season…you won’t be disappointed!

  13. Bensell on June 19th, 2008 6:36 pm

I’ve watched Weeds from the beginning – I just started my Showtime back up last week for season 4, but only have seasons 1 & 2 on dvd.

Weeds has the best mother-son dynamic on tv today – Nancy, Silas & Shane are a great family unit. When you add Andy to the mix, not to mention the extended “crime family,” you have a truly great family show. Just not in any kind of traditional way. Heylia may be my favorite character – her bonding with Celia towards the end of last season was absolute hilarity.

Plus, with (personal favorite) guest stars like Zooey Deschanel, Sprague Grayden and Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the deceased dad, you really can’t go wrong watching this show.

“Weeds” challenges our ideas of suburbia and the American dream all with pleasant black humor. I missed a few eps of season 3, but it’s not a show you have to watch every episode to enjoy.

Plus, the acting is fantastic. I agree with the Nancy Botwin love. She’s sorta selfish and acts without thinking, but in the end I’m always on her side. She a fascinating female character on television that is both vulnerable and brazen all at the same time.

Weeds always cleans up at the awards shows. I would love to be able to watch and see what the hype is all about!

I’ve just recently started watching Weeds from the beginning and it’s one of the smartest shows on TV. I’m just beginning the 3rd season and am trying to get through it as quickly as possible so I can begin season 4! It’s 100% fun, and a great great show to watch and check out.

  17. Brian on June 19th, 2008 9:39 pm

I just finished season one and I’m simultaneously watching seasons 2 and 4. Confusing? Sure. Fun? Surer. At my age, it’s even more fun than weed itself. And for the record, Nancy is frighteningly hot.

  18. Gavin on June 19th, 2008 10:34 pm

Weeds is amazing. It made me actually like Kevin Nealon. He’s hilarious, and the rest of the cast is great. Shane’s comments are amazingly insightful for such a young kid. Overall the show is sheer entertainment.

  19. Alison on June 19th, 2008 11:06 pm

Weeds is amazing in so many ways, but one of my favorites is the way in which Andy’s speech to Shane on how to, um, pleasure himself. Ah-mazing.

  20. Renee on June 20th, 2008 6:23 am

Weeds is the most riveting, addictive show I’ve seen in a long time. I’ve lost count of how many times I have actually gasped while watching.

  21. Courtney on June 20th, 2008 9:37 am

I’ve seen Mary-Louise Parker in things before (particularly in her short role on West Wing) and sometimes she’s bugged me, so the reason I’d want to see the how is to see how she works in it. I’ve heard good things, but sometimes my scale is a little different.

  22. allison on June 20th, 2008 11:15 am

You should be watching weeds because of Mary-Louise Parker. When I first saw the show I thought wanting to stay in your nice suburban home was kind of a lame excuse for becoming a drug dealer. But Mary-Louise Parker really sells the character.
Also it is hilarious. I love the cooky characters and guest stars (like zooey deschanel, whose character thought shane would do really interesting things with his facial hair).
The drama is also top-notch and I think season 3 was the most exciting yet. Every episode left you on the edge of your seat.

  23. Alyssa on June 20th, 2008 12:40 pm

I’ve never seen Weeds, since I don’t have Showtime. But every comment and review I’ve seen of it has been so positive that I’ve been dying to check it out. I love Mary Louise Parker and Kevin Nealon.

  24. Geri on June 21st, 2008 4:57 pm

I have a friend that raves about this show so winning this would definitely make it a lot easier since I don’t get Showtime.

  25. Andrew Miller on June 21st, 2008 6:05 pm

I love because not only is it painfully funny, it is also incredibly intelligent. It’s the kind of show that makes you actually think about what you would do in a similar situation, and often times the answer is not so black and white. Weeds also tackles a lot of today’s big issues and is one of the best critiques of American suburbia in both film and television. I can without a doubt say that Doug and Andy are the two funniest characters on tv right now, and yes, I do watch the Office, and HIMYM. I feel like a lot of stoner comedies rely a lot on stupid and often times unintelligible humor, but Weeds takes the opposite approach and makes all the jokes subtle and witty. Mary-louise Parker is a BRILLIANT actress I can’t see anyone else filling the role of Nancy Botwin. I highly reccomend you pick up this show and send me the box set! 😉
