16 is just a nice number isn’t it? Well not for Susie Garcia and Marquis Cunningham who were the latest dancers eliminated from SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE. We all saw it coming…well at least we knew Susie was going home. And although it makes sense that her partner would be eliminated along with her, I didn’t think Marquis deserved to go home yet.I guess I got a little ahead of myself and jumped right to the end, didn’t I? Well, to back up the Hot Tamale Train for just a second, let’s first talk about the opening group number and then the bottom three couples, all of which were asked to dance for their lives.

The Group Routine…
Tonight’s opening group routine was a Shane Sparks original and I LOVED it. I love me some Shane Sparks and I have missed him this season. It’s nice to know that although he won’t be judging he’s still going to be somewhat involved in the show. Marquis opened the number with class and when the poppers took over I was hooked. Comfort was amazing and really held her own up there with the likes of Twitch, Will and Joshua. I kind of felt that the non-Hip Hoppers were just background players, but that’s ok…they’ll have their chance to shine. Bravo Sparksy!!

Dance for Your Life…
Much like my girl crush Cat Deeley, I’m all about getting down to business, so let’s talk about the three couples dancing for their lives. Joining Susie and Marquis and doing solo routines this week were Comfort & Chris and Chelsea & Thayne. I’m not sure any of those couples were a big surprise to be in the bottom this week.

I can’t say that I was truly blown away by an of the solos, with the exception of Marquis but I’ll get to that in a minute. Chelsea was good but she didn’t have a breakout performance, nor did Comfort who was good but not all that exciting. Thayne is beautiful to watch but I was left wanting something a little more inspirational a la Travis Wall’s old routines. Chris really didn’t do much for me. I was bored. And then there was Marquis. The judge said his solo was all tricks and very little dancing. Really? That was the only solo of the night that I went back and watched again because I thought it was that good. I’m calling you judges. I think you were making excuses.

I Call Foul…
I’ve got a theory (and no it doesn’t involve bunnies) – the judges sent Marquis home in an effort to keep Comfort around longer.

Let me explain. I think Susie deserved to go home. She wasn’t at all impressive this week during the performance round – especially since she was dancing in her own genre. (Oh and I’ve hated her since her first audition) But Marquis has been impressive since the very beginning, and in my opinion he has shown us a lot more than Chris has to date. But here’s the deal – Marquis and Comfort aren’t a good match. Pairing the two together could be disastrous, and the judges don’t want to risk losing Comfort…yet. Comfort is good for the competition and more importantly good for the show. She brings a certain accessibility that some of the other dancers can’t. The show needs hip hop dancers because I think Producers believe that the genre appeals more to the masses. And let’s not forget that there’s a a good story that comes along with an untrained, non-professional street dancer taking on other genres. It’s the same reason they have all their chips on Twitch this season (even thought I personally think that’s a damn good bet). I think Marquis could have done a lot to raise Comfort’s level is other genres because he’s such a strong, trained dancer. I would have liked to see that match up. Then again, my theory could be complete BS and the judges really could see more potential in Chris than Marquis…anything is possible.

So two more dancers are gone, and next week the Top 16 take to the stage once again. I’m kind of hoping next week’s performances are a step up from this week…on the whole I wasn’t all that impressed. Were YOU?

I wasnt that impresses with the solos either! I remember Danny “dancing for his life” last year and holding my breath the whole time!!! So sad about Marquis. He has something really beautiful unlike Skanky McSkankerson Susie. I am sure she is a very nice person (eek) but I just couldnt get past how she presented herself. And her dancing was NOT up to par. I am still pissed off that she got to the top 20 and the red headed girl who mom did HSM didnt. She was amazing!

I am also sad that there are no hot russian guys this year. Where’s my Pasha?? Where’s my Dimitri??? : )

My theory is that the 1st four people kicked off are in the form of couples. The judges want to give everyone time to mesh before they start messing with who is paired with who. So Marquis got kicked off by default because he was paired with Tranny Suzie. Now, next week, if people don’t step up, I think we will see some partners broken up so we can get some re-pairing if only to get who the judges want into the top 10.

I don’t necessarily agree that the decision to remove Marquis had to do with Comfort, but I do also cry foul. I really enjoyed the solo by Marquis and thought it was pretty clear that he deserved to stay over Chris, based on their performances so far. I didn’t like the judges’ excuse last night and thought that there was some other reason for their decision. At least my favorites are still in the competition though, so I can’t be too upset.

I really liked Marquis’ solo too. I also came to like Susie quite a bit (she was so good last week). I’m sad to see each of them go. I don’t see anything particularly special about Chris or Thayne. They’re good, but not outstanding (as in nothing stands out about them).

It’s strange – I can’t say there’s 1 person who’s really captured my heart this year (like Nick S1 or Donyelle S2), the closest may be Kourtni. I root for Twitch because I’ve been watching him since he was on the Wade Robson Project on MTV years ago. And there are others I “root” for (Comfort, Kourtni, Mark, Matt and Joshua), but as a whole, I’m kind meh about this group.

I despise Katee’s sour puss though. Uggh.

It’s becoming much more transparent who the judges want to stay around. Each week, they praise dancers that just aren’t passionate or energetic enough (Chris, Katee, Thayne, I’m looking at you) while they criticize people are are truly unique and interesting (like Kourtni and Matt). IDK.

oh yeah, and what’s this “Comfort, you haven’t shown your potential or come alive until Shane’s routine tonight” when they gave her top marks in the first week for her sassy number (and outfit). A little consistency plz.

Let me ask you this Nigel, Mary and Mia. Last season Danny Tidwell performed a solo that brought all the judges to their feet. He was amazing. But to break it down all he did was the same jump all around the stage. Gorgeous? Yes. Did it show talent and strength? Yes. But why is Danny doing to same jump 1000 times in a row ok but some of Marquis “tricks” weren’t? I am pretty fired up about this.

I call BS on Marquis leaving. His solo was amazing. At least come up with a better excuse, jidges!

I have to agree and say that there is something a little lack-luster about this season of dancers. There’s no one that I connect to, or am espcially rooting for. I’m not quite sure why the judges picked the top 20 they did. There are several people that were beautiful dancers that they didn’t keep and kept people like Jessica and Susie, what gives?

I keep on thinking of the dancers on the last few seasons and how great they were, I miss them! (wow that’s sad!) They should bring back the past dancers and have a SYTYCD “allstars” type of show. I’d be all over that!

  9. Lindy on June 20th, 2008 2:42 pm

It doesn’t help me that there are like zero cute guys to be rooting for. I miss my travis, ian, neil, pasha’s of the past seasons! Bring on the hot men!

I also have to add that the choreography hasn’t really blown me out of the water this year… Don’t get me wrong, I’m still in love with this show, but they need to start stepping it up!

  10. Alyson on June 20th, 2008 3:59 pm

Was I surprised that Marquis and Susie went home? No. But that doesn’t mean Marquis shouldn’t have stayed around a little longer. His solo clearly stood out amongst the others, and I’m talking about the guys and the girls. Why must we suffer through another week with the oh-so-annoying Chris?

  11. Michele on June 20th, 2008 7:54 pm

I’m a little blah on this season as well. I just feel like the fire and passion from the previous years is missing. Is it the lack of Shane Sparks and Debbie Allen (who I just LOVE as a judge?) Not enough Mia & Wade routines? Or just lackluster dancers? I don’t know, but I hope they step it up – and soon. This is the only show I’m watching this summer (that is not from Netflix) and I am really hoping for more!

I don’t think it matters about Marquis because Chris is also going home soon. Those two don’t/didn’t stand a chance. Chris has a sweet demeanor and Marquis looked like he was about to cry all the time. They are definitely not in the same league as some of the others.

I loved the 4 highlighted dancers in the Shane Sparks routine (btw, did you also see Napoleon on Americas Best Dance Crew?). That is what I liked the most this week. I loved the chest popping and the guys holding (Twitch’s?) jacket.

I think my early favorite is Joshua. Ya gotta love Twitch’s personality/attitude/partner (best partnership) and it’s breathtaking to watch Will also. But Joshua just goes into the ZONE when he’s onstage like a lightswitch flips on. He could have an acting future!

    Can’t wait til next week!

So you’re saying that Chris would make a better partner for Comfort than Marquis would?

  14. Holly on June 23rd, 2008 12:33 pm

I think the real reasons Marquis was voted off were:
A: he isn’t as cute as others
B: is not a strong male persona
    C: Doesn’t have a memorable personality

This season hasn’t really captured me like Seasons 2 or 3. Does that mean it’s played out?
