Top Ten Emmy Finalists in Comedy & Drama

June 27, 2008 by

Has your favorite comedy or drama even have a shot at any Emmy this year? The Top 10 finalists for both categories have just been announced so you might want to check.

In an attempt to keep those annoying people who write blogs in check, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences have given us a heads up as to the top ten vote getters in both the Outstanding Drama Series category as well as the Outstanding Comedy Series category

The top ten in each category will be screened for a Blue Ribbon Panel over the course of this weekend.

The Emmy nominations are determined by averaging the total votes received for a particular show and the results of the Blue Ribbon Panelist. The five nominees in each category will be announced with all the other Emmy nominations at 8:30AM (est) on July 17th.

Here are the show that at least are in the running. My guesses for the Top 5 in each category are bolded.

Top 10 Comedy Series Finalists

  • Curb Your Enthusiasm
  • Entourage
  • Family Guy
  • Flight of the Conchords
  • The Office
  • Pushing Daisies
  • 30 Rock
  • Two and a Half Men
  • Ugly Betty
  • Weeds

A few thoughts…
I think the Academy will have a tough choice nominating both UGLY BETTY and PUSHING DAISIES since they both fall into that murky “dramadedy” category.  But I really honestly believe that PUSHING DAISIES should have the edge over BETTY.  I know I’m a bit biased, but UGLY BETTY certainly didn’t hold its brilliance from S1.  And those post-strike episodes were downright dreadful.  I think THE OFFICE and 30 ROCK are a lock and they should be.  I think 30 ROCK is going to pull out the win…if it’s nominated of course.
Top 10 Drama Series Finalists

  • Boston Legal
  • Damages
  • Dexter
  • Friday Night Lights
  • Grey’s Anatomy
  • House
  • Lost
  • Mad Men
  • The Tudors
  • The Wire

A few thoughts…
This category is a little bit tougher.  I feel pretty confident that MAD MEN and LOST will get the noms.  Glenn Close’s involvement with DAMAGES will probably sway more than a few people to vote for it.  Even if they haven’t seen it or know much about it I think they’re going to assume it’s great since she was on board.  I know it’s a long shot for both FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS and THE WIRE because Emmy hasn’t shown any love to date, but I thought it was a nice sign that both at least made it to the Top 10.  FNL is still one of the best shows on TV despite its rocky second season.  I’ve never seen THE WIRE (I know, I know…shut it ‘shida) but I hear it’s fantastic.  And since it just ended its run I think there is a small chance the Emmys will finally recognize it.  Personally I think we will see LOST walk away with the big prize, and I have zero problem with that.  Oh and if GREY’S ANATOMY takes one of the spots, them shame on the voters.  With the exception of the fantastic post-strike episodes, GREY’S was weak sauce all season.

And now I turn it over to you my trusty little TV fanatics.  Did your faves makes the list?  Who would you like to see in your Fave 5?

    It really bothers me that How I Met Your Mother did not even crack the top 10. Do these Emmy voters know it exists?

    Also, isn’t there a separate animation category? It surprises me to see Family Guy.

    And while I admit to not having seen all of the dramas (someday I will watch Dexter and The Wire), I would love to see Lost win, because I loved this season.

    Finally: Does anyone know (or have a link to a list of) what episode these shows submitted to the academy?

    On the comedy side, it’s The Office and 30 Rock for me and although I am an office flanatic, I too would give the nod to 30 Rock on this most recent season. Entourage is always in the mix and I have no opinion being a non-subcriber to HBO. (my cable bill is already $130 without it so that’s my story). I agree with Billiam on HIMYM, what’s up with it being dissed?

    On the drama side for me it is all about Mad Men. I think it is pure genius. I was also glued to the tube for Damages so it is up there for me. And glad to see FNL on the list even though I came late to that party.

    Here are my picks:
    * Damages
    * Dexter
    * Lost
    * Mad Men
    * The Wire – BEST SHOW ON TV EVER, seriously

    * Entourage – not gonna lie, it was pretty funny this season
    * Flight of the Conchords – “Bowie in Space” is forever a classic
    * Pushing Daisies – it’s cute, not really a comedy in my mind, still I’d love it to get nominated. Lee Pace is a cutie
    * 30 Rock – My money is on Liz Lemon.
    * Weeds

    Of course I love that The Office, Friday Night Light and Lost made the top 10, but how crazy (good) is it that Family Guy also made it to the top 10 finalists? I don’t think it’ll be one of the nominees, but I’m glad to see the Academy expanding its horizons!

    I’m really curious to know what actors made the top 10 lists, but I read they might not release those lists.

    What I’m really hoping for this year is a nomination for Dexter. But my top 5 would be:

    Flight of the Conchords
    The Office
    Pushing Daisies
    30 Rock
    Weeds

    Dexter
    Friday Night Lights
    House
    Lost
    Mad Men

    I’m hoping the Emmy voters do the right thing and include Flight of the Conchords over Ugly Betty or Two and a Half Men. (And here’s hoping Weeds gets a nom too!). Flight and Mad Men deserve the wins, in my somewhat humble opinion. The Office is my favorite show, but it was “off” this season. I’d be happy if Lost wins though. Wowza. There’s a lot of good telly to choose from!

    I’d love to see these as the top five comedies:
    The Office
    30 Rock
    Weeds
    Flight of the Conchords
    Curb Your Enthusiasm

    I’d love an Office win the most, but 30 Rock is really deserving as well.

    For drama–I just want the Wire to WIN this category, dang it! (Psst–I don’t care if you’re fed up with hearing this: Listen to me girl, you have GOT to quit stalling and watch it–best TV drama ever!)

    I doubt that Flight of the Conchords will make top 5 but if they did I don’t even know what i’d do. I love them so much. Even though the office and 30rock hold a place in my heart, if they lost to FotC i wouldnt even care.

    Aside the the glaring omission of “How I Met Your Mother” and “Big Love,” I’m pretty happy.

    Billiam – You can find a list of what episode each show submitted here: http://goldderby.latimes.com/awards_goldderby/2008/06/emmys-top-10.html

    I believe there’s a new rule that lets animated shows enter both the animated category and the best comedy category.

    As much as I adore Pushing Daisies and 30 Rock … I’m sad that Chuck didn’t get a nomination 🙁 I just finished a rewatch of the season and am convinced it’s one of the most brilliant shows ever. And the entire cast is … pardon the expression … AWESOME.

    As for drama … ho hum. House did have an amazing finale, but I’ve got to go with a new season love of mine and pick Dexter.

    The Wire is the best show I have ever seen. That said I will be shocked if they actually acknowledge it, because it can’t be judged based on one episode. Even if the average american tv viewer watched a few episodes they would say “Nothing has happened…. why aren’t the cops pulling out guns? …… who’s that guy again?“ The last episode (the one submitted) would probably seem just decent when taking out of context of the series. I hope 30 Rock wins best comedy!

    After watching the first few episodes of The Wire I deemed it the most overrated program of all time. After watching all five seasons I think it’s the best 60 hours of film ever put together!
