PREVIOUS DANCE

It’s just about midnight and I just finished watching tonight’s installment of SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE. As exhausted as I am I couldn’t go to bed without sharing my thoughts on the dancers eliminated tonight. Especially as there seems to be a lot of unrest about who was sent packing.

But before we get to the eliminated contestants, how banoodles was Wade Robson’s Mia Michael’s opening routine? I’m a big fan of the darker, more macabre routines and I think it’s why I am such a fan of Wade Robson’s work (ramalama anyone?), but tonight I was surprised to see the creepy crazy coming out of Mia Michaels. Don’t get me wrong, I know Ms. Michael is a nut job, and I mean that with the great respect, but sista is out there. So I should have expected this from her, but I didn’t. Shame on me. It was fantastic. And what a stand out performance for Mark. You are quickly become a favorite you little freak.

Dancing for their lives…

I can’t say that I was shocked to see Chelsea & Thayne, Comfort & Chris, or Kourtni & Matt in the bottom three tonight. I don’t think that Kourtni and Matt really deserved to be there, but I can see why they were there, and I’m not sure I can easily swap them out with another couple and feel 100% ok about it.

So kicking things off with the first solo of the night was Chelsea Traille. I like Chelsea and I think she brings a lot to the show, but once again I found her solo lacking. She’s a gorgeous dancer but she doesn’t really bring much to her routines. I was expecting much more given the feedback she received the last time she was in the bottom three.

Thayne is also a great dancer. The whole Benji Schwimmer look alike thing is starting to distract me. They really do look so similar. I liked what Thayne brought tonight. I can’t say that I think it’s all that standout when compared to past SYTYCD Contemporary dancers, but he didn’t suck or anything.

Kourtni‘s solo showcased what she does well. This was my favorite of all the solos because I really liked how she interpreted the music and the lyrics. It’s such a short time you are up on that stage and tonight Kourtni used every single moment to her advantage. Well done.

With each week I like Matt more and more. I thought he had a good solo tonight. Probably the best of the three guys, but once again, I’ve seen better. I’d like to see Matt spend more time choreographing his routine as it feels a bit like he’s making it up on the fly.

Comfort is one hell of a dancer. If she were in a club I’d be one of those girls standing in the circle around here wondering who I could take home if I could do what she was doing. But I don’t think Comfort has enough to last long in this competition. I don’t think she is versatile enough. And while I liked her solo tonight I can’t help but think of bigger picture and what keeping her would mean to other contestants.

And last and kind of least was Chris. His solo did nothing to help him. I just don’t think he has the level of talent of the other Contemporary dancers in the competition. And tonight when all three Contemporary dancers were dancing for their lives, Chris really stood out, and not in a good way from the other guys.

The Judges have made their decision…

And tonight we said goodbye to Chelsea Traille and Chris Jarosz.

I think it was definitely Chris’s night to go home, but I’m kind of shocked that Chelsea Traille was dismissed from the competition before Comfort. As I’ve said, I just think Comfort lacks a lot. But I must say that if we were going to base it on just tonight’s solos then the judges were right in their choice of Chelsea. She wasn’t that great.

So two more go and 14 remain to dance another day. Tune in next week when Thayne and Comfort perform their first routine as brand new partners.

Oh and don’t think I forgot about Quest. I just think they are worthy of their own post.

Did the right two dancers go home tonight? How would you have made the call if you were the judges?

Yeah. As long as Kourtni didn’t leave I was fine. I don’t think any of those bottom six have a shot at winning and Nigel pretty much told them that tonight. I love how they don’t pull punches but they give them the truth in a caring way.

I was glad to see Chris go. It was his time (actually, I thought last week was his time).

I, too, am less convinced about Chelsea leaving us last night. I think she’s way more versatile than Comfort is.

Oh, and my crush on Mark is solidified with his work in last night’s group routine. I guess Mia got over her anger with him after rehearsal for week one’s contemporary, since she gave him the lead role in the group piece. He’s so quirky-cute.

I think its too bad for Chelesea Traille, but on the other hand I like Comfort as well, so I dont know……

We’ll see what the new pairing is like next week…

I was shocked to hear Chelsea was gone. Chris not at all. I didn’t get to watch until late so I didn’t know who the third couple was. Interesting that Jessica & Will’s disco didn’t make the bottom three. I liked it but I didn’t expect America to. I really think the judges were looking for a way to give Comfort one more week to pull something off and this was the way to do it. If she and Thayne pull a crappy dance next week, I think she will be gone.

I felt like that African Jazz would have been an awesome routine in the hands of some of our S2/S3 favorites. I just don’t think Comfort OR Chris has IT. And Chelsea never really put any feeling into it either. I liked the comic book routine though – I would have put the disco in the bottom three, kept Will and gotten rid of that girl instead. But overall I’m pretty happy with who went home.

kath, you read my thoughts. every week. how does that happen?
mark is SOOO becoming my favorite! i always am a fan of the people who are a little off-kilter, & i think he is crazy unique. looove him. he & chelsea (sp?) hightower are definitely my favorite couple.
& thayne = benji!! i notice that every single time the camera focuses on him! it’s really weird…
i agree with your every word. except i LOVE comfort. but you’re right, based on versatility, she’s not too strong, but i think she is freaking hilarious!

Oh, how I long to see my Kourtni and Mark dance together! They’re my favorites and I’d love to see what they could do as a team. I, too, have developed an intense crush on Mark. If they’d been paired together to begin with, I doubt the lovely Kourtni would struggle weekly in the bottom three.
