The Big OFFICE News (Watch the Video)

September 26, 2008 by

Listen if you were just spoiled you can’t really blame me since everyone and I mean everyone is talking about THE OFFICE today.  It finally happened.  Jim Halpert proposed to Pam Beesly.  If you want to relive the moment again and again…and maybe again, then be my guest.

I triple dog dare you to get anything done today when you can just watch this:

Grrr, we’ve not watched it yet. It’s on our DVR.

There are two shows I try not to be spoiled one is The Office the other is Lost.

When I logged on to my Google Reader this was the first thing I saw. I don’t mind spoilers as long as I’m warned then I can choose. You posted this headline less than 24 hours after the airing.

I hate to complain ’cause I love your site, but you really dropped the ball on this one. I’m hoping that when the hubby and I watch the show tonight that your headline turns out to be a foiler.

    If not, BOOO!!!

  2. Vanfan14 on September 26th, 2008 1:12 pm

    Kathie,

Is this the new numero uno on your list o’ amazing TV kisses? I know you ran that list a few weeks ago, but seriously. That. Was. Amazing.

  3. Jennifer on September 26th, 2008 1:15 pm

I’ve watched that clip so many times this morning it’s ridiculous. It just continues to be more and more incredible.

  4. Joel on September 26th, 2008 1:16 pm

Yeah, I CAN complain that you spoiled it. Same as Tracy, saw it in my Google Reader, didn’t even have the option of not reading it. Guess whose RSS feed just got deleted from my Reader? (hint: yours)

Seriously, just a jerk move. Why did it have to be in the SUBJECT LINE? Here’s an example of what you could have done:

“BIG NEWS ON THE OFFICE!! (WATCH THE VIDEO)”

..Huh, that wasn’t so hard. In conclusion, you suck.

  5. Jenn on September 26th, 2008 1:19 pm

I’m going to go ahead and defend GMMR on this one. How long is she supposed to wait? I didn’t watch the show last night either and I may have been spoiled but it’s my fault that I didn’t watch it. Do you make the rules for the spoilers? What if someone doesn’t watch it until next week? It’s something that we can’t talk until you’re ready?

  6. Megan on September 26th, 2008 1:19 pm

Seriously, you guys are upset with GMMR for spoiling you? You didn’t think that the internet might have some spoilers they day after the premiere? Give me a break.

On to other tidbits… did Jim get a new car? That doesn’t look like the Saab.

  7. Rob on September 26th, 2008 1:28 pm

I come here all the time and I never comment but I have to now. I’m so sick of people complaining about being spoiled on a show the day after it airs. This is the age of DVRS and if you choose not to watch the show when it airs then that’s the risk you take. If you have GMMR is your reader then you should know that she talks about the office and that office spoilers can be expected.

If she posted this last night before the west coast saw the show then i would be right there with you complaining but i just don’t see the fault.

Be upset if you want but please don’t start with the name calling.

  8. Rincey on September 26th, 2008 1:28 pm

I think the general “rule” is to wait 24 hours before discussing MAJOR spoilers without warning. A lot of people like myself are busy Thursday nights, but I just stay up extra late to watch certain shows because I know it is difficult to avoid spoilers.

I also follow GMMR on Google Reader and even if you just read the headlines, you would’ve been spoiled by this post.

Just for the future, major plot points like this should at least stay out of the headline because if people see a headline that discusses a show they know they haven’t seen yet, they will probably close the window before they are spoiled. At least, that is what I do.

  9. Mandy on September 26th, 2008 1:28 pm

Once the episode airs on both coasts it’s no longer a spoiler. Only advice I can give is avoid the sites that may be talking about the show. Or avoid the internet all together until you’ve had time to watch the show.

  10. John on September 26th, 2008 2:02 pm

I have to concur with the GMMR defenders.

Once the show aired on the West Coast it is fair to comment on the show. And GMMR talks about the latest happenings on TV shows. You know that if you read the site.

  11. Give Me My Remote on September 26th, 2008 2:10 pm

Sorry if this is a double comment – my computer just froze.

I changed the headline. I still firmly believe that once something has aired on the West Coast it is no longer a spoil. But I don’t really need the name calling or the aggravation so I changed it.

  12. Michele on September 26th, 2008 2:14 pm

I just love, love , love how her reaction was the same ‘What are you doing’ from Casino Night, only with a much better ending. And with another delicious kiss. Almost a full day later and I am still squeeing inside!!

  13. Melody on September 26th, 2008 2:27 pm

    Anyway…
I really enjoyed the season premiere! Umm is it bad that I laughed when Kelly fainted? haha. I loved this episode.

  14. John K. on September 26th, 2008 2:31 pm

You really called kathy a jerk? What is your problem dude?

I didn’t watch The Office until lunch time today. I stayed off GMMR and other sites where I could be spoiled. If I cared so much about the show I would have watched it last night.

  15. Laurie Crist on September 26th, 2008 2:44 pm

don’t worry Kath, it wasn’t you who spoiled it for me. Melora Hardin (Jan) totally ruined it on Martha Stewart BEFORE the show aired. She looked a little like, oh oops but chattered on quickly after it, saying well you all know they are about to anyway….!

(apologies if it is a double post)

  17. carrie on September 26th, 2008 3:11 pm

Wow—if you don’t want to be spoiled then watch the show when it airs. Morons!

Thanks for posting the clip. 🙂

  18. Megan on September 26th, 2008 3:35 pm

This scene to me was as perfect as it possibly could have been! I woke up this morning all grumpy when my alarm went off, and then I was like it’s okay, Jim and Pam are engaged. Lol.

  19. Emily on September 26th, 2008 3:39 pm

If it’s already aired, it’s not a spoiler anymore!!!

Thanks for posting the video…how many times in one day can I watch it before I’m considered “clinically insane” too ? 😉

  20. GMMR on September 26th, 2008 3:47 pm

Let’s be nice to each other. No name calling, please!

  21. Crentist on September 26th, 2008 4:04 pm

We love you, GMMR! I would’ve been bummed if your headline had spoiled it for me, but I’d still love your site!

I, for one, have played this over and over again, watching his face, then hers, then his, then hers…. Whew! And what a kiss!

    Thank you!

  22. tara on September 26th, 2008 4:16 pm

Umm, if you don’t want to be spoiled , and don’t watch it live, then DON’T GO ON THE INTERNET! Duh. That’s beyond common sense. After something airs on both coasts its fair game!

…. I can’t stop watching this clip haha

  23. Kim on September 26th, 2008 4:30 pm

I’ve been reading tv sites/blogs for years and I have never heard a “rule” dictating that people wait 24 hours before discussing an episode. Every site I frequent goes by what I consider to be the general consensus: all episode discussion is fair game after it airs.

In other news, I loved the scene. Perfect for Jim and Pam. It was totally about them, and the moment, and not about fireworks, or grand, empty gestures. He just couldn’t wait. I loved the simplicity, and the rain, and the kiss.

  24. Nicole on September 26th, 2008 4:33 pm

I think that anyone who’s heard all of the rumours of something “momentous” happening in the rain has been expecting that an engagement was going to happen. I personally haven’t seen it yet, but that’s the risk I take by not watching on the day it airs. All I can say is that I CANNOT WAIT to see this episode tonight! And for once I’m really glad that Hulu doesn’t work in Canada because there’s no way I’d be able to resist watching that clip at work. At least now I’ll get to watch it for the first time in context.

  25. Deirdre on September 26th, 2008 4:40 pm

I just watched it again. I LOVED the kiss. That has to fall under the top 10 kisses on TV EVER!!!!

  26. Michele on September 26th, 2008 4:59 pm

OK, I’ve already commented here today, but the last line of your post says it all. I CAN’T seem to get anything done – I get goosebumps and tear up everytime, and you are like an enabler putting here with such easy access for me to waste my day away!!! (But its totally worth it…)

  27. karen (Kath's sister) on September 26th, 2008 5:05 pm

    That gave me goosebumps

I wondered why there was 2 places to comment on the Office. Now I realize that this is the “Spoiler Comment” thread.

Everyone has said what I was thinking, but I have noticed that Comcast headlines don’t spoil as much right after the show airs anymore. Also, on CBS.com, they don’t plaster the photo of the recently booted Survivor on the front page or headlines. I watch the show online and it’s nice that I can do it without being spoiled.

  29. Tracy on September 26th, 2008 7:50 pm

    Hey all,

As the person who originally started this discussion I feel I have to defend my comments and my actions.

I agree with all of you saying once it airs on the West Coast it’s fair game. However, that being said I still don’t think a spoiler should be in an article headline especially so soon after it airs.

And for all of you people who told me not to go on the Internet … what are you crazy? I did not initially come to this site ’cause I know Kath would have a recap. Like I said in my earlier post I logged on to Google Reader to see what was going on in the world, not just on TV, and that is where I read that Jim and Pam are engaged. I don’t just have entertainment sights on there.

I think a lot of you were very mean … you don’t know why I didn’t watch the show last night. For your information, I had an evening meeting and didn’t get home in time to watch. When I did get home, yes, I could’ve watched it via the DVR, but the husband had a conference call with Japan and it’s a show we ALWAYS watch together.

I don’t even know why I’m telling you guys this except to say it’s very easy to throw stones when you’re faceless. Just be a little more kind. You never know the other person’s story.

I do want to thank you Kath for changing the headline because I’m sure there are others like me who have other stuff going on – really don’t we all? – and didn’t want to be accidentally spoiled.

Unlike Joel I will NOT be removing this site from my reader. I really enjoy the commentary, recaps, etc. I also realize that you can’t please everyone all of the time. All I ask is that you be mindful of the headlines.

  30. lauren85 on September 27th, 2008 9:47 am

Just throwing in my two cents on this debate cause its hilarious… calm down people! I vote with the “after it airs its fair game” camp…team GMMR! As much as I love the Office, it still still just a scene in a tv show. And simply knowing that they were engaged (which we all knew would happen eventually) doesn’t mean that scene was any less amazing. I agree with all that’s been said, after all of Jim and Pam’s drama, the sweet simplicity of that moment was perfect. Ok….off to watch again…. 🙂

  31. Lisa (aka lmr) on September 27th, 2008 9:59 am

If you miss a season premier, you need to call Ted Mosby and borrow his Superbowl antispoiler head gear 🙂 and cut Kath some slack.

  32. Michele on September 27th, 2008 10:22 am

    LOL Lisa – agreed!

And whichever way you found out, Jim & Pam are ENGAGED people! :0) Watch the video again (and again) and just give in to the squee!

  33. Liz on September 27th, 2008 11:38 pm

Entertainment websites should not have to wait for you to watch TV.

I loved this engagement-I only hope Fake Jim doesn’t ruin things.

  34. Lisa (aka lmr) on September 28th, 2008 8:07 am

Pam’s been in love with Jim forever and the man just proposed so she’ll go back to NYC on cloud nine (and with a much nicer ring on her finger) and I don’t think Pam would turn a wandering eye to fake Jim, she’ll be much too giddy. By my calculations, she has 6 weeks left in NY, not much time.
