The Best of….THE OFFICE: “Business Ethics”

October 10, 2008 by

The Office, Amy Ryan, Business Ethics, Holly Flax

For the record, I started a new job in June and it wasn’t stated in the new employee manual that I couldn’t  sleep with vendor for discounts…or steak.  I mean really, how is one expected to just know that? Desperate times call for desperate measures.  If there’s anything we’ve learned from big business as of late it’s that ethics fly out the window when we are in an economic crisis.  If you don’t believe me, let me show you my $440,000 spa vacation bill.

As we already talked a bit yesterday about last night’s episode of THE OFFICE, I thought maybe you could indulge me by letting me share my favorite bits from “Business Ethics” via the power of the world wide web.

My favorite moments – what were yours? (And despite appearances, not all of these videos are of Holly)

The Big Announcement…

Really?  No enthusiasm here people?  It’s almost like they don’t have any idea about the struggles Jim and Pam have gone through to get to this point in their relationship. Oh wait, they don’t.  Wanna bet there’s a pool going around about whether or not Pam will actually go through with this wedding?

More after the jump…

Let’s Get Ethical…Ethical…

Really?  This is the first time Olivia Newton-John has been featured in THE OFFICE?  I find that hard to believe.  Ha!  This scene is why Michael and Holly are so perfect for each other.  Two peas in a uncomfortably awkward pod.  Jan was never this much fun.

Cookie Monster Sings Chocolate Rain…

Come on you know searched for it?  I didn’t know it actually existed, but it does.  This is very Michael – Cookie Monster Sings Chocolate Rain.

Dwight Schrute: Time Thief…

Ah a classic Jim/Dwight prank.  The taunting of Dwight with the Battlestar Galactica/Lord of the Rings/Star Wars references was inspired.  Truly inspired.  If Jim would only use his power for good he might be running Dunder Mifflin.P.S. Hey Jim – Battlestar Galactica is not a shot by shot remake of the original.  I just had to clear that up.

Hollis “Holly” Flax: Morality Hall Monitor…

The female Michael Scott.  Holly just wants to be liked.  Don’t we all?  She should be careful though. It’s never a good thing to fall in love with you best friend in the office.  It never ends well.  Or maybe…

So those were a few of my favorite Dunder Mifflin moments from last night.  Have any others to share?

Seems that while some of you thought it felt like the old OFFICE we know and love others just didn’t find the funny.   What did you think of last night’s episode?

And I don’t know if this is the right time to discuss this, but I’m so Team Holly it’s not even funny.  I know she won’t be sticking around for too long, but I’m almost sad the see the return of Jan.  I like seeing Michael happy.  Holly vs. Jan?

Oh and as a bonus – just in case you forgot…

Jim and Pam, proposal, engaged, THE OFFICE

I really enjoyed last nights episode. Being a major JAMMER I was worried that not having Pam in the office at all was going to suck. But it was fine! I think it did feel a little like the old Office and the humor wasn’t over the top. I loved it, I’ve watched it three times since last night!!! So yeah, it was a good day.

I really liked it. I thought it was a safe, calmer episode, but that’s ok by me after the big announcement from the last episode. I loved the Jim/Dwight prank..and Dwight’s reaction during the Battlestar Gallactica conversation was hilarious. The episode was ok with only the one, smal, Pam scene…but hopefully that wont happen very often! Jim seemed to be a little giddy. ME TOO. 🙂

    Some other funny moments:
*When Michael threw out Holly’s lunch so they could “bang it out” over lunch!
    *A belt with a key
*Jim’s talking head about not working b/c he’s too busy watching Dwight
*So maybe you’re not completely ethical after all. Yes, maybe I’m not.
*How do you tell somebody you care about deeply – I told you so?

GMMR — I don’t know this myself, having never seen either show, but I was told by someone who is a diehard original Battlestar Galactica fan — I think Jim knew it’s not a shot for shot remake of the original, and that was the joke. My friend told me that anyone who was a real fan of the original hates the remake because it is so different. She said that when Dwight was trying to eat the paper out of frustration, she could totally relate.

Somebody correct me if I’m wrong about that.

Not at funny as the premiere but still good. I can always tell how I feel about it by how quickly I want to re-watch the episode and I haven’t done that with this one yet. It was still worlds better than some of the stuff we got last year. I definitely prefer episodes that take place in the office (unless they take place at a gas station) so it felt more old-school in that regard. I’d give it an A-.

I really liked last night’s ep – I did miss Pam but I really do love Holly/Michael! I’m definitely Team Holly – I like Melora, but I really wish there was a way for Amy to stay on the show. I realize she’s a movie actress primarily, but she is so great as part of this cast, and really, I just want Michael to end up happily ever after with her someday!

I also loved the scene of Jim describing Battlestar Galactica so horribly wrong to try to get Dwight to say something non-work related. And liked the touch of Andy not quite being sure if Jim was right or not!

I think the first two eps this season have been great – can’t wait to see what’s going to happen next!

  5. Corilee on October 10th, 2008 12:44 pm

Cam, I think you’re right. I’m pretty sure everything spilling out of Jim’s mouth there were not correct (which is why Andy was so confused) just to get Dwihgt to argue back.

But beyond that, i thought the episode was funny and good. I’m a little disappointed with this post, though. GMMR, though I haven’t commented before (I don’t think), I’ve read your site from time to time, and I really enjoyed your previous seasons’ commentaries after episodes. You would analyze Jim’s growth potential (remember the episdoe where they’re stuck in the building after hours and you analyzed how Jim’s not quite as great as he thinks he is?) and things like that. where did that go? I miss it. This is just posting scenes from what I just saw last night.

You ask some good questions but your analysis isn’t there either. I read more of your blog than your comments, so I want to hear your answers to some of these. Why ARE you on team Holly, for example? Can we get more info on your thoughts and less “I like The Office!”

I missed Pam being on the episode. I’d choose her over Holly any day. Is this going to be a constant thing throughout the season?

I find it so interesting that this episode is described as ‘safe’. I suppose, but that scene in the kitchen where Michael backs away from Holly with his mug and the pot, and no one says anything? I was still struck by the silence, even after four seasons. I still think that even when the show is ‘safe’ by its own standards, it’s still on a higher standard. I laughed a lot when Michael was trying to held Meredith, his voice was funny when he called her an old bag.

I really enjoyed this episode. It was hilarious when Michael and Holly were singing together at the meeting. Also Jim describing Battlestar Galactica to get Dwight mad was super funny. I like how this season is going so far, it really has a season 2 feel to it.

  9. Lisa (aka lmr) on October 10th, 2008 5:14 pm

I liked the ep a lot…Michael tackling Jim right out of the frame slayed me.

I thought the “shot by shot remake” joke was a subtle hit on criticisms about the UK Office vs the American Office?

  11. Kris on October 11th, 2008 7:14 pm

My favorite moment was definitely the BSG conversation! Had me cracking up for the longest time! This episode was all around perfect and was like watching some of the earlier episodes of The Office–i like them like this. Great great episode!

Agreed, better than most of season 4. And the “let’s get ethical” makes me laugh every time.

One caveat, though: Michael and Jim falling over was ridiculous and just … wrong. For the show, I mean. I’m not above some physical humor, but in a show as sophisticated as The Office it was a huge disappointment. Let’s hope that doesn’t continue.
