Poll: GMMR's Winter Weather What to Watch - Give Me My Remote : Give Me My Remote

Poll: GMMR’s Winter Weather What to Watch

December 18, 2008 by

Now I don’t always have the utmost faith in Boston meteorologists, but it seems that we are in for a doozy of a storm over the next few days.  Some predict upwards of 2 ft of snow.  I’ve lived in New England my entire life, but I’ve never embraced winter.  I hate it.

There are only a few ways to make being stuck inside during a winter storm better and all of them rely on an appearance by John Krasinski, Neil Patrick Harris, Zac Levi, Lee Pace or Joshua Jackson…and since I don’t expect any of those boys to drop by over the next few days (unless of course you are home in Newton, JKras – in that case, mi casa es su casa), I’m going to assume the worse – this is going to suck.

This is where you come in.  Assuming I’m going to be putting the ‘ol TV work over the next few days, I thought you could help me pick the DVDs I should be watching.

The following DVDs are brand new and sitting in my apartment right now.  Which of the following shows should I be watching while snowed in?

  1. Damages – Season One just arrived today.
  2. The West Wing – Just got the complete series and I’m kind of a fiend
  3. Supernatural – I have the first three seasons on DVD but I’ve yet to watch more than 4 episodes
  4. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia – The first two seasons just arrived last week
  5. Flight of the Conchords – HBO sent me Season One but I’ve yet to watch it

Vote below, and plead your case in the comments.

Hmm…this is a really hard decision. I guess my vote would be for Flight of the Conchords. The only reason I would pick that over Supernatural (which is soooo good) is because a big storm might not be the best atmosphere to watch a show that might be a little scary already. Flight of the Conchords is ridiculously funny, so it should help take the sting out of the winter weather!

  2. spacyz on December 18th, 2008 2:49 pm

I haven’t seen Flight of the Conchords, but among the others, the clear winner to me is Supernatural. I asked for the DVDs for Christmas. It is absolutely one of my favorite shows and it managed to get even better this season. Besides the sarcasm, fun, creepiness, and relationship between Sam and Dean to enjoy, there is also the hot actors to watch and drool over.

Second choice would be damages, since it is coming back again soon, and you could watch the second season with us. I enjoyed it but would probably have appreciated it more watching it in a short period of time on DVD.

  3. Emily on December 18th, 2008 3:04 pm

Obviously, you should catch up on Supernatural.

And although I haven’t seen it, I’ve heard Damages is amazing. I’ll be trying to watch Season 1 of that myself.

  4. Maggie on December 18th, 2008 3:04 pm

West Wing! West Wing, West Wing, West Wing!

  5. Jennie on December 18th, 2008 3:15 pm

I would vote for Supernatural because it will be so dark and scary out, I like to capitalize on weather like that. Plus nothing makes you warm and fuzzy like staring at Jensen Ackles for a few hours!

If you don’t like winter, you should move down to Florida! It’s 80 here today.

  6. Phyllis Vance on December 18th, 2008 3:34 pm

I can’t believe you haven’t seen Flight of the Concords yet. The kiwis get my vote! And you’ll love Mel, she’s the craziest fangirl ever, so she is hilarious to us real life crazy fangirls.

  7. Jayme on December 18th, 2008 3:38 pm

I definetly would push Flight of the Conchords to the front of the viewing list. Then follow it up with one of the darker shows, to go in line with what Jennie said – it’ll be a perfect compliment to the weather. Once you get through what ever you choose, go to It’s Always Sunny. Just maintain a pattern of switching from the comedies to the dramas – just to either from becoming to monotonous. Let us know what you decide!

  8. Jess on December 18th, 2008 3:40 pm

    Flight of the Conchords, definitely.

You’ll fall in love && gain two new tv boyfriends (:

  9. Jamer aka Jamie on December 18th, 2008 3:48 pm

Flight of the Conchords…..and you won’t regret it!!
So funny it will be there perfect remedy to the snow!

Get caught up on Damages and sprinkle in some Supernatural here and there. They are all good, but you NEED to get caught up on Damages before the new season! I also recommend blazing through Season 1 of Sunny. It’s super short and hilarious. You can do it!

  11. Kelly on December 18th, 2008 4:09 pm

Those are some tough choices! I recently got season 1 of Damages and couldn’t stop watching it! I spent a couple nights up til after 1am because I couldn’t stop watching. But on the other hand how could you not want to spend a few snowy days with the Winchester boys 🙂 Good luck choosing!

  12. Lynzee on December 18th, 2008 4:17 pm

Aw sad, no love for Always Sunny???

It’s an aquired taste for sure… and, just like every other show, not EVERY ONE hits it out of the park…. by when they do? OMG. SO many quote-able moments!

You have to at least give it a go. Its some off beat humor, but I love it.

(To this day my friends and I will roll up a pant leg and start sing Biz Marquee songs… watch the Welfare episode, you’ll love it)

  13. Nicole on December 18th, 2008 5:17 pm

I say watch Supernatural (naturally I’m voting for the Winchesters!) because as others have pointed out, spending a snowy weekend watching Jensen Ackles is never a bad thing. However, I agree that you should alternate (mostly) heavy Supernatural with some comedy, particularly Conchords. Sunny is an excellent show and as Lynzee said, it’s an acquired taste, but if you like it, you LOVE it.

Conchords is offbeat as well but so approachable and likeable – and Mel is awesome as the fangirl/only fan of the band.

C’mon – that’s like, four new tv boyfriends (or more if you, like me, find yourself crushing on Mac and Dennis on Sunny)!!

  14. Nic on December 18th, 2008 5:59 pm

The West Wing is brilliant. Never seen Supernatural – doesn’t appealed for some reason – so can’t comment. Damages is great. Always Sunny in Philly – also good. But Flight of the Conchords? GENIUS. You have to watch it.

  15. allison on December 18th, 2008 6:38 pm

without a doubt, flight of the conchords! it is quirky, hilarious, and like someone else said, you will have two new tv boyfriends!

  16. rjs on December 18th, 2008 7:04 pm

Conchords is the happiest, but Sunny is awesome! I just discovered it myself and got totally hooked. It’s dark and snarky, though, so you have to be in the mood. Conchords is silly fun.

  17. littlebit on December 18th, 2008 7:08 pm

oooh! my vote is for damages. that show is bleeping fantastic. can’t wait until it’s back on again.

  19. Simon on December 18th, 2008 7:13 pm

Damages. I just started watching it myself (i’m on episode 5), and though it’s not as good as I had hoped, it’s still excellent.

    Have fun.

  20. Emily on December 18th, 2008 7:27 pm

I’ve never seen any of them, I just wanted to rub it in your face it was 70 and sunny here.
Man, I love the south 🙂

  21. Alyson on December 18th, 2008 7:42 pm

I’d go with Damages. I haven’t seen it yet, but I’m dying to. I wish they’d show a day-long marathon of Season 1 before the Season 2 premiere so I could catch up.

Of course, if it were me, I’d probably mix it up and catch up with Josh, Toby, CJ and the gang, too.

  22. J-9 on December 18th, 2008 7:53 pm

Definitely Flight of the Concords. The songs in each episdoe will get you through the crumbiest weather and cabin fever for sure.

  23. Tess on December 18th, 2008 8:44 pm

    WEST WING!!!

I’ve just been on a west wing kick, I’ve already seen the entire series twice, but I just watched them all again and I can’t express my love for this series enough.

  24. Stephanie on December 18th, 2008 10:52 pm

Love this idea, Kath. I work in Boston but live on the North Shore and just found out that we have no work tomorrow (god bless snow emergencies). Now I can use these suggestions for my most enjoyable day at home. Thanks!

  25. Jules on December 19th, 2008 2:18 am

I’m on the West Wing boat because that’s always my back up and sentimental favorite for a storm day (sorry no snow where I am, but lots of storms), plus it always makes me feel good. But Damages and It’s Always Sunny sound good, too. I say go with what you want… 😉

  26. B on December 19th, 2008 2:26 am

You have HAVE have to watch It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia!! I watched seasons 1-3 in a weekend and then DVR’d all of Season 4 so I could go back and watch them!! Really hilarious, rolling in the floor laughter! Take it from this John Krasinski and Lee Pace loving fan! You won’t regret it!!

  27. Carli on December 19th, 2008 3:09 am

If I’m only picking one, then Flight of the Conchords. My second choice would be Damages. They’re night and day, though so it’s hard to pick between the two. I say check out both and if you finish and have more time, throw in Supernatural.

  28. Megan on December 19th, 2008 9:08 am

Flightt Of The Conchords! Yay! This is seriously the funniest show I have ever seen! Its also super quirky and and I’ve got crushes on both guys now!

  29. Patty on December 19th, 2008 11:02 am

Catch up on Supernatural already! Since it will be daylight most of the time, no excuses! Then at night you can watch everything else.

  30. Jennifer on December 19th, 2008 12:41 pm

    Flute of the Commodores!

  31. lishka on December 19th, 2008 2:38 pm

Flight of the Conchords! Watch the first season, then catch the Season 2 premiere at funnyordie. It’s original, sweet and completely hilarious! And you’ll develop a strange crush on Jemaine.

  32. kp11 on December 19th, 2008 3:56 pm

FotC! So funny and a great remedy to cold crappy weather. Seriously, I’m laughing right now since this made me think about it.

  33. Lisa (aka lmr) on December 19th, 2008 4:02 pm

West Wing, my personal pick for the best TV drama ever.

  34. Nicole on December 23rd, 2008 6:26 pm

I was in the same snowstorm this weekend! I was stuck in my apartment in Waltham from friday afternoon until Sunday evening… during which I watched the entire first season of Friday Night Lights. I now know what everyone has been raving about. Fantastic show.

  35. Chris on December 29th, 2008 11:46 pm

I vote for the west wings since I’ve just started watching that myself and so far it is amazing!!!!!!!
