Highlights from the Obama Inauguration Concert

January 19, 2009 by

Flipping through the channels yesterday afternoon I stumbled upon the Inauguration Concert live from Washington, D.C..I didn’t really know anything about it, but when I saw Bruce Springsteen take the stage to perform “The Rising” backed by a full choir I was fully hooked.

Over the next few hours there were amazing musical performances complimented by readings of some of the most inspiring speeches of all time. And then of course was Jamie Foxx’s dead on impression of the President-elect.

U2, Steve Wonder, Usher, Jon Bon Jovi, Josh Groban – they were all there. But for me it was seeing Garth Brooks take the stage to lead the crowd in “American Pie”, “Shout” and his own “We Shall Be Free” that really made me smile. And of course Beyonce’s rendition of “America the Beautiful” was stunning.

A wonderful concert to kick off a historic weekend. You can watch the concert on HBO.com or check out encore performances today at 1pm ET/PT and 9:30pm ET/PT.

Here were just a few of the musical highlights for me.

Beyonce…

What were some of your favorite moments? I have to tell you I was pretty emotional through the entire concert. But during Garth Brooks rendition of “Shout”, seeing all those people just jumping up and raising their hands in celebration…that was pretty special

Loved the whole concert, including Obama’s speech. And Kath, I have to agree, Garth got the people on their feet. He got the first family on their feet, too, with “Shout.” That was a pretty cool moment.

OH and “We Shall Be Free” was the most amazing version of that song I’ve heard in awhile. I love that song; I knew he’d sing it when I heard he would be at this concert.

Somewhat embarrassed to admit it, but I actually enjoyed the kids concert on Disney more than this one. Teen stars like Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus performed for the an arena full of children with military parents deployed overseas and guests of honor the Obama girls and Biden grandchildren. Parts of it were beautiful and moving.
