CHUCK in 3D: Are You Ready for Another Dimension

February 2, 2009 by

Put on those uncomfortable little paper glasses and settle in for a very special 3D episode of CHUCK.  Yes, Chuck, his protectors and the Buy More gang are taking us to another dimension tonight with their first 3D episode.  NBC was kind enough to send me an advanced look at tonight’s episode and while the 3D effects are pretty damn cool, they don’t overshadow the fact that CHUCK is back!  Finally!

First off, for those of you who don’t have 3D glasses handy or weren’t able to find them in stores as of late, don’t fret – you can still enjoy tonight’s episode…and you will because it’s a lot of fun. But those who were lucky enough to snag a pair of the peepers then be prepared for just a little extra something from CHUCK tonight.  Although I’ve already seen the ep (ok maybe twice) I’m definitely going to be watching again tonight because I’m intrigued to see the 3D effects play out on my big screen TV rather than the little laptop screen I’ve watched it on to date.  I think the effects will be that much sweeter.  And to prepare you just a bit, the entire episode is in 3D, which means you’ll be wearing your glasses the whole time.  But don’t expect things to come flying at your face the entire hour (how distracting would that be?).  While there are a number of times the 3D capabilities are utilized well (for example guest star Jerome Bettis wielding a knife or Morgan seemingly reaching out of the screen to touch you), the rest of the ep in 3D really just feels like HD gone wild.  Everything is that much crisper and you do feel that if you wanted to you could reach out and just touch Zach Levi or Yvonne Strahovski. (I’ll give you a minute to let that sink in).

As I said, it’s less about the 3D and more about CHUCK being back with a brand new episode.  And tonight Chuck Bartowski has a new buddy to share his adventures with.  Someone you may know him from a little show called LOST or perhaps this indie film trilogy titled THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Dominic Monaghan guests tonight as Tyler Martin, a British rock star whose life is on the line when he is unwittingly duped by those closest to him. When Chuck is put in charge of taking care of Tyler, well let’s just say things go about as well as they do when Chuck is instructed to “stay in the car”.  Yeah, that bad.

Chuck vs. The 3rd Dimension Preview
Watch a sneak preview of the new 3D episode of Chuck! (SPOILER ALERT)

CHUCK lands another great guest star this season in Monaghan. He brings a lot of fun to tonight’s episode. And it’s a special treat for fans of LOST who, with tonight’s episode, might just get a glimpse of what it would be like if Charlie Pace had lived and Drive Shaft had gone on to mega-success. Aw, Charlie. But don’t worry because Tyler Martin and Charlie Pace aren’t one in the same, so you won’t be distracted after the first minute or so.

I don’t want to say too much about tonight’s episode because I know SB will be back tomorrow with her full review, but this isn’t just a stunt ep.  There is an important storyline carried over from the last episode of CHUCK – one that has something to do with Chuck seeing Sarah kill a certain Fulcrum agent.  Yep, that will be dealt with tonight and it’s something you don’t want to miss.

As many of us fans have taken note of, this year the writers have really figured out how to showcase the various aspects of Chuck’s world without the subplots suffering.  So expect some big laughs from the guys at the Buy More tonight.

All this to say that I really hope you check out CHUCK tonight.  And if you have never seen the show before tonight is the BEST time to jump on board.  Actually if you’ve never seen the show and feel you want a little background, I will personally fill you in…just leave a comment and let me know.

Given the circumstances, I think that tonight’s episode of CHUCK should have been the show NBC aired after the Super Bowl last night.  It had a lot more to gain than THE OFFICE.  But let’s focus on eh big picture, and that big picture is you getting off your ass and telling everyone you know to check out CHUCK tonight at 8pm on NBC.  You, and they, won’t be disappointed.

To help pass the time, here are some fun previews and behind-the-scenes clips from tonight’s episode.  Warning!  They are all kinds of spoilery.

The cast of Chuck talks about working in 3D.

Zach, Yvonne, and guest star Dominic Monaghan explain “Chuck vs. The 3rd Dimension” from the inside out.

Are you excited?!

I’m looking forward to it, but hoping the effects are better than the ads last night — maybe it’s my tv, but the 3-D effects were kind of terrible.

finally a tv episode in 3d cant wait till all the tv shows are in 3d. ONE BIG PROBLEM! My tv needs to be calibrated to display the right colors. Any chance for a calibration screen or picture?

Wow! The show cut to the quick tonight. Surprise! Surprise! Well that should make many of you folks happy tonight. Chuck got the goods of his chest right away with Sarah.

My only caveat was that the whole issue just kind of got swept under the rug. You killed an unarmed person and oh I lied about it. That’s it? Disappointed in the moment myself. A wonderful opportunity for the characters to explore some fertile dramatic territory squandered. Sad.

The main thing about that scene was just how false it was for Chuck to accept Sarah’s spy rationalizations and for Sarah to be so unaffected. Especially when we saw her conflict after shooting Mauser. They might as well have talking about the weather.

The first truly, totally false moment in the series.

But its done and over with and the show can move on.

Dom was hilarious. Cheesy As was Casey with his darts.

The scene with Chuck convincing Dom to go onstage was nicely done too.

The BuyMore stuff after the opening act was weak IMHO.

    Entertaining but a middling episode.

The 3D stuff was rather hit and miss to me. Expect that it needs to be seen in HD with the appropriate calibration and better glasses.

Didn’t have the glasses so thE blurring was kind of an annoyance but liked the EP. Loved Dominic M – he’s such a good actor.
