GOSSIP GIRL: Dear Writers..WTF?

March 17, 2009 by

Just got back to my desk and checked my inbox only to find a ton of people asking me about what I thought of last night’s GOSSIP GIRL.  You really want to know what I thought?  It was awful.  Perhaps the worst episode of the series.  And while next week’s ep is most definitely better, it’s not that great either.

What happened to the writers over this long hiatus?  It’s like the fell asleep and lost all humor from their lives.  GOSSIP GIRL may be a drama, but the beauty of the show is that it never takes itself seriously.  I’m not sure what happened with last night’s episode but it was a big old mess.  The play within the play. Dan having sex in the closet. The ridiculous director. The theater critic who couldn’t distinguish a total teen breakdown from actual art? Yikes. And don’t even get me started on the ridiculous “Eyes Wide Shut” plot line that they insist on dragging out with Chuck. Clearly the writers don’t listen to The TV Talk Podcast, or else they would have know to run quickly away from that silly secret club storyline.

I’m willing to forgive this week’s episode and next if the writers promise to pull it together.  It’s the sharp wit and icy banter mixed with pretty people and fashionable clothes that make this show.  Let’s not fool ourselves into thinking it’s something it’s not…it doesn’t hold up.

You asked.

As I said, next week’s episode is definitely an improvement.  Nate finds himself ingratiated back into his family but not without consequence.  Blair continues her downward spiral of depression over Yale.  She seeks comfort in three different men, but only one seems to be getting the job done.

I agree this really wasn’t a good episode. When chuck was “investigating” I was laughing lol. Blair is totally unraveling and it’s kind of annoying, she just keeps making it worst lol. I hope it gets better.

I wasn’t impressed with the first half, the but second half was quite an improvement. I’m not that big of a Dan and Serena fan, but you would never guess that at one point they were involved during almost the entire episode. They acted like strangers. Nate and Vanessa FINALLY got a storyline, although I’m still not sure why we’re supposed to cheer for them, Dan’s teacher thing better be over, and I liked Blair’s epiphany about her life and Chuck ending up at her place. The episodes that work are party due to the fact of Blair/Chuck scenes. But I must say my favorite moments were actually between Dan and Blair – I love the friction between them. And I love that he told her he had sex in the closet 🙂

    Yeah – lame.
Eyes Wide Shut has to go.
Maybe now Blair can put a halt to declaring war on everyone and their dog.
Serena had a crush on that imbecile?
Dan is boring, even when having sex in a closet.
    Jenny is boring period.
I hope this was a transition ep that sets things in motion and not an indication of the quality of the rest of the season.
