CHUCK vs. The Network Pick Up – It’s CHUCK Week on GMMR

April 6, 2009 by

It’s Monday. The weekend is over. It’s back to the grind. You’ve got a full week ahead of you before the weekend arrives again. Things look gloomy, but then you remember…Chuck.

In only its second year, CHUCK has made its way on to the list of my favorite TV shows – ever. In my jam packed weekly TV lineup, CHUCK is one of the brightest spots. It’s one of only two shows on television that is 100% must see appointment TV for me.  No going out on CHUCK nights. The DVR can’t be trusted.

It was Spring two years ago when I got an early screener of the premiere of CHUCK. By the end of the summer I think I had seen it 9 or 10 times. When my friends asked what was worth watching in the Fall of 2007, CHUCK was at the top of the list. I was a fan from the start. But somewhere along the way, and I’m not sure when this happened, I realized that CHUCK was one of those shows that made TV worth watching. I was hooked, and I mean hooked. Hooked as in when there was a rerun on Monday my day was just a little bit darker. Hooked as in found myself scouring the web reading anything and everything about the show. Hooked as I found myself keeping a DVR full of old episodes so I could watch them over and over again.

TV is subjective. You like what you like.  But much like FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, I really feel like CHUCK is one of those shows that would appeal to everyone, given the chance. It’s truly unlike anything else on TV today.  The mix of comedy, drama and romance offers something for everyone.  The writing is sharp. The acting is woefully overlooked, but off the charts good. CHUCK has so much going for it…except the ratings.

With so much working for the show, what’s working against it? The time slot. The #1 reason people give me for not watching the show is the time slot. I mean there are an insane amount of incredible shows all airing at that same time (curse you networks!). But here’s the deal. I watch ALL the same shows you do. I watch ‘Big Bang’, ‘HIMYM’, ‘House’, ‘Greek’ and  ‘Gossip Girl’.  And all of those shows are appointment TV for me. Some of my very favorite shows on TV. I never miss an episode. But you know what?  As much as I adore every single one of those shows, CHUCK is the one that I watch LIVE. It’s my favorite of the bunch, and if you know me then you get how big that is given my love for the competition.

That’s why I’m writing this today – the ratings. With only a few episodes left in the season, NBC has yet to pick up CHUCK for Season 3. It’s getting close to decision time and we the fans need to give NBC a little incentive.  We need to let them know we care.  Fan campaigns are great and I would never discourage anyone from doing what they can to let NBC how much they love CHUCK, but I honestly think nothing gets the attention of the network more than butts in seats…eyeballs on the screen.

I don’t know about you but I’m sick and tired of all my favorite shows getting canceled. We invest our time into these shows, storylines and characters only to have them taken away well before their time. So to that end, I’m declaring this week CHUCK Week on GiveMeMyRemote.com. Every day this week (and probably a few times a day), we’ll be posting news, reviews, videos and anything else we think might convince you to give CHUCK a shot. It’s going to be a CHUCK overload, and some might not be happy, but I’ve got this blog and I need to take it out for a spin.  Let’s see if we can’t get a few more of you watching this fantastic show.

I’m not silly enough to think I can do it on my own.  I’ve reached out to many of your favorite TV blogs and they too will be taking a special look at CHUCK this week.  We all will be doing out part to get newbies watching Monday nights at 8/7c. I’ll be posting links to their posts all throughout the week. Just click on “CHUCK vs. The Network Pick Up…Inside the Intersect” box on GMMR for the latest posts.

But then there is YOU.  And by YOU I’m talking to those of you who are already fans of Chuck AND those of you who have never watched the show. For those who already watch every week, we are going to need to YOU to help spread the gospel of CHUCK. We’re recruiting YOU to help.

For those of you who aren’t yet watching, all I ask is that you give it a fair chance.  Watch CHUCK at 8pm tonight and see what you think for yourself. Like I said, TV is subjective and you like what you like. Maybe it won’t be the show for you, and that’s cool, but just give it a shot.  And to make it easier, some of the other shows on at 8pm are reruns tonight.  See how nicely that works out?

LIVE CHUCK Chat Tonight!!
If you want to watch with other CHUCK fans and newbies, then join me at 8pm EST tonight for a special LIVE CHUCK chat during the show.  We’ll watch together.  That way if you have any questions about what’s going on you’ll have a bunch of other TV fans who can help you out. And tonight’s episode “Chuck vs. The Dream Job” is pretty damn good, so it’s a great night to start watching.

And check back later today when our resident CHUCK expert, SB, give us a little CHUCK 101. A must read for all CHUCK newbies.

Thanks in advance for putting up with my self indulgence this week. I know it might be a bit much for some of you, but I couldn’t let another one of my favorite shows slip by without putting up a fight.

I love Chuck.. but I can’t watch it live or record it (only one TiVo and it can only record two things at once). So “Big Bang Theory”, “How I Met Your Mother” and “House” win because these are things my fiancee watches as well. I end up watching “Chuck” and “Gossip Girl” online.

  2. Lynzee on April 6th, 2009 12:49 pm

Chuck is my favorite, but I abstain from watching live so that I can watch it online every Tuesday morning. Since I’m not a Nielson house hold, watching online is the best way my viewership can be counted!!

    Save Chuck!

  3. SB on April 6th, 2009 12:53 pm

I’m all over it! I’ll be doing the live chat with Kath tonight, posting stuff all week, and doing all the pimping I can. I’m pretty excited!

I wish i could watch live but live in South Africa 🙁 I do watch online on Tuesday hope that counts towards something. Really hope this show is renewed its brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Marianne on April 6th, 2009 1:26 pm

Thanks for showing Chuck some love. You’re absolutely right when you say that people should just give this show a chance. The characters are easy to root for and the cast is pitch perfect in their roles. For those who aren’t fans yet, these last few episodes of the season are a great time to jump in!

Thank you so much for putting your opinion out there!! I love Chuck and have been a fan before the show even first aired (but I’ve loved Zachary L. since his days back at ABC). It suprised me over it’s two season run with the great acting, the constant plot twist, and the fact that Fedak and Schwartz really had a bunch of stories in their arsenal! I am positive that there is a season three in store, but we can only hope. I cant watch it live because I am usually in class (future doc here) but I wish I could – online the next day is the best way that I go.

  9. Bonnie on April 6th, 2009 4:14 pm

Chuck is one of the BEST shows on TV. It will be a sorry day for NBC if they cancel it!!!

  10. Christa on April 6th, 2009 4:15 pm

CHUCK is the one show that my husband and I agree can’t be missed. We pick the kids up from wherever they need to be early to be home in time for CHUCK at 8! It is a great show that is so funny. We just finished watching season 1 on DVD (again) over the weekend. To TPTB, please please SAVE CHUCK!!!

  11. Melody on April 6th, 2009 4:19 pm

I definitely want Chuck to be renewed for a 3rd Season, so I definitely will lend my support.

  12. Megan on April 6th, 2009 4:20 pm

Here we go again. Another show that I absolutely love and it’s in trouble already. How can anyone not LOVE this show? Sigh. I absolutely love this show (even Jeff and Lester have grown on me) and it would be a shame for such a witty show to be canceled. Let’s get it together folks!!

I got hooked on this show this past December. I read an article over at Television Without Pity about shows people should be watching but aren’t. They were absolutely right. “Chuck” is now one of my all time favorite shows.

I have to say I haven’t been this hooked on a TV in about 15 years. I can watch episodes over and over and not get tired of them. It’s a great show. Lots of fun, smartly written with a fantastic cast with great chemistry.

  15. Geri on April 6th, 2009 4:39 pm

Thank you so much for doing this! Chuck´s the show I am most looking forward to. It´s the one hour of the week that makes me smile for an hour. I just love it. Couldn´t stand to lose it.

  16. JennFred on April 6th, 2009 4:46 pm

Save Chuck! I will be very upset if this show goes off the air. We have lost too many good shows to supposedly “poor” ratings like Eli Stone and Pushing Daisies. Please watch tonight!!!

  17. Katherine on April 6th, 2009 5:04 pm

Thank you so much for doing this. I absolutely love this show and definitely want to see it get renewed. I like you talk to people about the show all the time and they always say they like the show, but they don’t watch it because of the timeslot. So I am showing my support to renew Chuck, but I also ask that NBC move Chuck off of Monday nights. I think that doing that would improve the ratings greatly.

  18. Scott on April 6th, 2009 5:13 pm

Thanks for writing this column! My wife and I, and our 18-year-old daughter and her boyfriend, watch Chuck religiously. This show simply MUST be renewed!

    Chuck has got to stay!

  21. reen426 on April 6th, 2009 5:31 pm

i’m not being bias when i say this show is very unique and great!…i’m an huge tv watcher…so, i seen almost every genre that’s been aired on network tv…but i’ve never seen a show quite like CHUCK…this show possesses all the right elements for a hit!…it’s got action, comedy, drama, romance and pop culture references for everyone…and the show actually pulls it off with all these elements!

to most viewers the cast might be unknown to them, but you’ve got to give this amazing and diverse cast a chance!…i’m pretty sure that this show can satisfy everyone’s taste because it doesn’t concentrate on one thing!…most viewers have never heard of the show or has a preconceived opinion on it…the basis of this show is that a nerdy guy gets sucked into the spy world accidentally…which results in a stunning CIA agent and a tough NSA agent to protect him from baddies…this is one of the toughest show to promote since it’s got such a huge basis to cover…it’s pretty hard to cover all these aspects in a 15-30 sec commercial…here’s a small preview of the show’s concept: http://chuckychuck.magnify.net/video/CHUCK-Fall-2007-avi

PLEASE—> if your one of the many people who’s heard of the show or seen all these “Save CHUCK” campaign on blogs, forums or reviews in the recent weeks…PLEASE JUST TUNE-IN TONIGHT OR THE NEXT THREE MONDAY’S AND SEE WHY WE’RE SO PASSIONATE FOR THIS SHOW 🙂 …it would really be unfortunate for this show to get cancel and then have you tune-in and realize what a great show this is…thank you for reading 😉 …and fellow chuckaholics keep spreading the CHUCK love!!!

  22. Karen on April 6th, 2009 5:35 pm

For us, Chuck is required live viewing, and Big Bang Theory is required recording (hubby isn’t into HIMYM like I am, cbs.com doesn’t have BBT on their site, and we can wait the 8 days for House on fox.com). Watching the geeky underdog get pulled in over his head and get through it is just awesome. The chemistry between Chuck and Sarah is great and heart-breaking. And we love, love, LOVE Adam Baldwin, and have since Firefly. The B-story is great, too. As a coworker said, without the Buy More group, it’d get kinda boring.

  23. sarah-fan on April 6th, 2009 5:57 pm

Chuck is the one and only show I am really hooked to and of which I can’t miss an episode. it is so awesome and so smart and one jsut has to love everything about it…i can’t understand why it is stil so unknown, since it has a tremendous potential…unfortunately i can only watch it on tuesdays cause i live in europe…

  24. Jenna on April 6th, 2009 6:35 pm

BEST SHOW ON TV…PERIOD. I COULD NOT agree with your assessment or heartfelt seniment more when it comes to CHUCK. It is the ONLY show I WILL NOT miss. I have not watched a show regularly (I mean like HAD to watch a show regularly) since…man…probably since Friends! I WILL NOT MISS IT. I watch it live AND DVR it (although my roommates tend to stop the DVR often because they have another show that they want to watch and they know I will watch it live).

That’s presisely the issue. SO MUCH IS ON! Mondays are so full. Almost every show I watch is on Monday in the same, or close to the same, slot. It’s brutal. Chuck is the best, and most FUN, show on TV and there is NOTHING out there like it. It is so underapreciated it’s not even funny! NBC will break my heart (and MANY others) if they cancel CHUCK. WE LOVE CHUCK!!!! Don’t let CHUCK get away NBC!

For those of you who have yet to check out the show. DO IT. You won’t regret it. If you like fun, well written, well acted television there is nothing better out there! It has moments of laugh out loud humor, endearing characters, suspenseful moments, drama, romance, and great fight scenes. It has it ALL.

  25. Give Me My Remote on April 6th, 2009 6:59 pm

Awww I hope that’s true! I hope they check it out and stick around because it’s well worth it!!!

  27. JT on April 6th, 2009 7:47 pm

Thank you for doing this! Chuck is the show that I look forward to the most each week. If ratings go up, we have you to thank.

  28. April on April 6th, 2009 8:08 pm

Everything that was said in the blog is exactly what I tell people when I promote the show. Mondays do get brighter when I think of Chuck after work, not only do I record it but I watch it live as well. The cast is amazing and I mean everybody (even Jeff and Lester). Its just one of those shows that leave you with a smile everytime and everybody needs a smile every now and then. Not to mention Zach is a cutie, that does help the show. PLEASE SAVE CHUCK!!!!

  29. Jocelyn on April 6th, 2009 8:57 pm

I’m a massive fan of Chuck – and have never seen it on a TV! I’m an Asussie, you see, but an Aussie impatient to wait for the best shows from the USA to be shown here. (Veronica Mars was on at 11pm every SECOND Friday here, after the Friday movie, on a channel barely anyone got, two years after it was shown in the USA – and then the network wondered why the ratings were abysmal!!! Grrr….) So since last year, I’ve been following Chuck (along with a multitide of other fabulous shows) online.

My point is, even without being able to contribute to the ratings, I can’t miss an ep. of Chuck. It’s awesome. I can’t even PICK a favourite character – Chuck? Sarah? Casey? (Oh, it might just be Casey..!) Captain Awesome? They’re great, and the show is laugh-out-loud funny, not to mention action and guest-star packed. Chuck is one of the most watchable shows on US TV – even for those of us nowhere near the US!

  30. Jamie on April 6th, 2009 10:11 pm

I have felt it for two years, but you have put it into words.

    I LOVE Chuck!!!

I think it is the BEST show on television and definitely one of the best shows of all time. I watch every episode over and over again. I record the episode on Mondays and will watch it a number of times during the week to get me through to the next Monday. It’s insane – I just don’t get tired of it! You learn so much more each time you watch it. Tonight’s episode was so great I am watching it for a second time now. I do not normally get all wrapped up in television shows, but I cannot get enough of Chuck. I am just addicted to it – and I wish others would give it a chance. It is a show of such amazing quality and wit. I can’t stand that it is on Monday nights against such tough competition. And I think that this is a show that is most appreciated when you have seen it from the beginning. I really, really hope that NBC renews Chuck – I think about it everyday! And I am so happy to see that you have this campaign to get the word out there about this underappreciated gem!

    SAVE CHUCK!

Chuck and the Office are my favorite shows, no question. SAVE CHUCK! My all time favorite scene from Chuck is in season one when Morgan is calling Chuck a “mind cheater” for checking out Lou. Talking about chewing on Sara’s hair like licorice. Made me laugh so hard I cried!

A British fan here who also loves ‘Chuck’. The cast is close to perfect; the guest stars have been brilliant.

We’re having a convention Over Here including Adam & Zach very soon! As far as I know, this is the first Chuck themed convention anywhere worldwide 🙂

We’re looking forward to getting season 2 on Virgin 1 soon!

  38. Seraphim on April 7th, 2009 5:33 am

I personally love Chuck – it is one of the few shows that manage to make me laugh (not just smile) nearly every week. I really like the characters of Casey Jeffster and Morgan + I can not deny that I enjoy the appearance of Yvonne.

However when i first watched it I thought that it would mostly appeal to the male audience for it somewhat nerdy with some cute girls in the show. But now seeing fan pages like this and reading the comments there seem to be at least as many female fans as male ones (I think more even).

By now 100% of my friends which borrowed my Chuck collection became addicts themselves – so it is kinda sad that the ways to watch and to support Chuck over here in Germany are so limited 🙁 (we can’t even watch it on Hulu)

Thank you for showing it so much love with your bloggs. I hope NBC renews it – they don’t have that many other great shows from what I’ve heard and Chuck fans seem to be very loyal despite the tough time spot.

  39. leapme on April 7th, 2009 6:59 am

Save Chuck!!! And give his dad a part in it next season too!!!!

  40. Patrick on April 7th, 2009 11:21 am

Good. I’m glad I’m not the only who who recognizes that Chuck is in one of the most competitive time slots (if not the most competitive) of the week. Since Fox moved House to Mondays to keep 24’s back, the night has gotten even more competitive. NBC REALLY needs to move Chuck and Heroes (or pair up Chuck with the new David E. Kelley dramedy) to Wednesdays. Against the current competition (Old Christine/Gary Unmarried, Scrubs/Better off Ted, and Lie to Me), NBC could take 2nd place, even if its numbers didn’t improve. All of those shows (ABC’s shows probably won’t be there next year), skew older than Chuck, although Lie to Me probably has some crossover audience.

I’d like to at least see Chuck in a new time slot before getting canceled entirely. NBC really hasn’t given it much help (not bringing it back after the strike, the Super Bowl promotion mishandled, etc.), but a new night/time could be the thing it needs.

  41. Albert on April 7th, 2009 2:18 pm

  42. tom on April 7th, 2009 4:54 pm

I love Chuck!! Best show ever in my book. I will be crushed if it isn’t renewed. Please NBC- Renew this show!!!!

  43. Karina on April 7th, 2009 7:18 pm

Chuck is clever, funny, action-packed! It’s got heart and it’s got real people in it! Sure it has crazy spy stuff but all of that is grounded by Chuck’s family and coworkers and the real guy that Chuck’s character is. The movie references alone can make you chuckle through an episode but the episode and season plot arcs are tremendous. Please don’t take away the only one-hour comedy we have! And please don’t take away the funnest, funniest action show since…since….? Since never! Chuck is its own genre and the nerds out there like me LOVE IT!

  44. Karen on April 7th, 2009 8:01 pm

I am so happy to hear someone else say that Chuck might be their favorite show ever. Because it is for me. And I am old enough to have seen all the classics in first runs, not reruns. I love it so much that my husband and I travelled last year to Paley Fest to get to meet the cast. And I was able to tell Josh Swhartz how I felt about the show. Hope it is on forever.

  45. Alex on April 8th, 2009 2:16 pm

I LOVE CHUCK luckily my uncle works for NBC and i always ask him if chuck is going to be canceled and he always tells me “no”because he too and his wife love chuck. it is the best tv show i have ever seen. and even though the ratings have been low my uncle tells me that they won’t take it off…though this was at Christmas when he told me this-i will, as i always do, ask him when i see him on easter. but i hope that this wonderful show will gain the fans that it most definitely deserves.

Chuck is a truly amazing show- any time I make people watch it, they are in love by the end. This includes my 75 year old grandmother and my 17 year old brother. It is a show that everyone can watch together and completely enjoy. We need to save this show- it is the perfect mix of comedy and drama, and is the only show that I am really excited about every week.

Save Chuck!! NBC PLEASE RENEW CHUCK!!! Best show on tv!!

  56. Joanne on April 13th, 2009 6:59 pm

This is the ONLY show on televsion that my husband and I both enjoy together because it does have something for everyone. And we, too, never miss it – all others are taped for viewing later. There aren’t many shows on anymore that just make you smile and just feel good after watching it. The last couple years, NBC has managed to cancel every decent show they have after a very few viewings – they let you just get interested in the characters and they take it off. I, for one, am done with NBC nighttime television if Chuck goes. What’s left anyway.

  57. Kate Diamond on April 14th, 2009 12:22 am

I love Chuck! I am really hoping it gets renewed.

  58. Christina on April 15th, 2009 12:02 am

I enjoy Chuck. I am not able to watch it on the regular scheduled nights but watch it weekly. It will be a sad day if this goes off script. There are far too many reality shows or just intense dramas. This one appeals to many and is a laugh each time.

I absolutely LOVE the television show, “Chuck”. It is one of the most well put together shows I have watched in a very long time. It has a great cast, great story lines, and I can completely relate to the character, Chuck (since I’m a computer geek and have had a friend like Morgan at one time or another!)

This is one of the very few television shows on that is worth watching! Taking this show off the air would be the most insane thing NBC has ever done, and would only make more people switch back to FOX to watch House. Jay Leno doesn’t need a prime time slot. His show probably won’t last that long anyway.

In the “Year of the Writer’s Strike” I must admit that the new shows I tried on that year fell by the wayside. All, that is, except for Chuck.

With television inundated with poorly written versions of much better shows that have come before and far too much voyeuristic pleasure being taken in the downfall of others on “reality” shows, Chuck is one of the very few, smartly written, amazingly well acted shows to hit the small screen in a very long time.

Chuck can find its audience and with some smart decisions on the part of NBC in terms of choosing a time slot, my bet is that audience could be a very large one.

So move Chuck, give him a chance. I’ll follow him wherever he goes.

If Chuck isn’t renewed I promise NBC will never be shown in my house ever again.

I love that show. It’s about time that the geek is the man and not some hot guys running around in a swim suit or some t-shirt and tight jeans. I mean come on what other show can you have the geek be a spy, work with a hot chick and have her want him and have a tuff guy that works with him that wants to just kill him and doesn’t. it’s all to great to see. and the other people on the show i love how they all have there own little story line in the main story line also. so they need to pick CHUCK up again and don’t think of droping the ball like they do so much every year and get rid of the good shows and keep the shitty ones.

Chuck is one of the few shows I can watch with my 11 year old, that we both genuinely love. it is not to mature for her, or too ” tween” for me. There are so few show like this on television. PLEASE do not cancel it.

I love this show!!! I now love Mondays just because of Chuck. Please don’t cancel this show, I don’t feel like I’m being pandered to. It is very well written and great actors so much going on but not too much at one time. It’s grown up without being too adult. It is one of the few shows out there that is not reality crap all the time. Please, save Chuck!!
I will follow him!! Let USA network, pick him up I will follow!

hey! Chuck is great! I am not home when it is one but record each episode to watch later that night! Again it is like the show… the little guy (Chuck) vs. The EVIL EMPIRE OF FULCRUM (or in this case the network). Chuck has a loyal following and does well in the ratings. We as Americans though think that if it is not in the top five you drop it fast! We need to get over it and realize that it is long term not short term that has meaning. Will Chuck ever be #1? No but could it be a strong #8-10 for five years? YES. reminds me of the joke about two bulls, one old one young on top of a hilll……..

Again…NBC prove that they just dont get the intelligent viewer, nor the number of people who record or catch their episodes online. Mondays are a hard night for NBC. Several programs and potentially great ones have died a death on Monday Night NBC, like Journeyman, have struggled. It seems Chuck is heading the same way.

What amazes me is that NBC should understand this as they are behind HULU. Hulu is one of the greatest inventions after sliced bread! Watch your favorite programs when you want to, not based on a network schedule!

Chuck is my second fav show after Heroes on Network TV…but i watch both online. I only watch two other programs at the moment, also online, and can’t stand reality and game shows.

    SAVE CHUCK!

  72. Linda on April 30th, 2009 8:50 pm

I don’t have a TV, but live for Chuck on Hulu.com. Chuck, Bones, and Friday Night Lights. Top three shows. “Be a nerd…join the herd. Save CHUCK.”

    oh…and Firefly…bring back Firefly.

  74. Mike Richardson on May 5th, 2009 7:47 am

My wife and I both enjoy Chuck. It’s one of the few shows that we watch religiously. For us, there are usually about 3-4 shows a week that we like, Chuck is always at the top of the list…because it really does have a little of everything.

Also, I like the theme. 🙂

Chuck rules there is nothing else like it. because so many people love Chuck I don’t know why they would even consider putting it in the trash. ANOTHER SEASON OF CHUCK, PLEASE!

Hey there fellow Nerds – love the show here in the UK – I do not know how the ratings work but how can the Networks not realise that viewing is more than just ‘on the airdate’??? Most of the television I watch is secondhand (or premiere as far as UK times go haha) and that fanbases from online content help to promote the network itself? I mean if I hadn’t of gotten into The Sopranos would I have found The Wire on HBO and Entourage et all?? I think not – the problem being that there is far too much to watch on a given night but watch them we do – in the mornings, on lunch breaks, on lazy Sundays …

SAVE CHUCK – HE NEEDS TO GET WITH SARAH. (Z. LEvi must surely want for this also! haha)

    This is all.

    Carl.
