BONES: The Double Death in the Dearly Departed

April 21, 2009 by

Just when I think BONES can’t surprise me anymore, it pulls out a total shocker. Booth likes pretty lawyers? What? Oh, haha, yeah, we knew that. But Brennan knows the words to Amazing Grace?!!? Ey yo! I laughed a lot during this episode, but I know a lot of people don’t care for ‘funny’ BONES. If the show wants to dabble in what I consider the absurd (that is Booth and Brennan carrying dead persons around and/or singing gospel favorites), then I guess that’s their prerogative. Not my favorite episode of the season. Probably not even my favorite episode of the week, but…that’s not something to translate over, know what I mean?

And can we all at least agree that the needle in the eyeball was just ghastly?

The Case: A J-team is attending the wake of a Jeffersonian colleague, Dr. Hank Reilly. But when Brennan is paying her ‘respects’, she deduces that he did not die of natural causes. The gang has to get to the bottom of this murder/code word: translation, before the body is buried. There was a lot of alcohol, there was a lot of money, there were a lot of suspects, and the murderer would have gotten away with it, if it wasn’t for those meddling kids! (no dog, though….)

The Squints:

No squintern of the week! Let’s move on…

Angela: Her job this week was to conveniently have a Toyota (Matrix!) parked in such a way to be stolen by her team in order to steal a dead body. Go Angela! Go Team! Go Toyota!

Sweets: Haha. If he wants to be part of the team, he has to make sure and not tell potential suspects that murder is nothing to worry about. That’s okay, Sweets, it’s just a little something everyone has to learn.

Cam: Hey, alright! A mention of the mysterious Michelle! We find out she is smoking cigarettes, but that MIGHT be a ploy to get Cam to stop smoking cigarettes, which is news to Brennan and us. I liked Cam in the lab in this episode, actually. And I laughed at how she kept getting put off by Booth and Brennan.

Dr. Jack “Foogoo King of the Funeral” Hodgins: Hodgins has been all over the place this season. Angry, sad, experiment-giddy, heartbroken, and tonight…nervous. In his defense, he was in the middle of a toast when he spotted Brennan and Booth carting away the deceased. That’s enough to make any one nervous. But his “King of the Funeral” line made me chuckle.

THE (self proclaimed) Devastatingly Charming Seeley Booth & the (equally self-titled) Attractive and Sexy Temperance Brennan:

This episode ranks high on the friendshippy side for Booth and Brennan, which is something I normally like, very much. It feels a little like a letdown after the last two, but I’m wondering if that is a Fox scheduling thing and not a writers’/characters’ arc thing. The dialogue at the beginning was very funny. (Booth, that man has been translated!) Brennan just loves the undercover/code stuff, doesn’t she? But as excellent as the beginning dialogue was, I thought the end scene was kind of contrived. Booth was tres charming, though, am I right? And Brennan turned on the charm as well, which was funny.

Thoughts from you? Where did the episode rank for you? Do you prefer the humorous and lighthearted BONES to the more serious? Let me know what you think, and I’ll see you on Thursday for another BONES episode!

I laughed so hard during this episode. I loved it. It was hilarious, it was over the top. 🙂 Wonderful!

There’s no denying that Season 4 has been interesting, to the very least.
I enjoyed the episode a great deal. It was refreshing to see them all with a different backdrop. You could tell that Brennan loved the code-word, very FBI-esque, and Booth singing Amazing Grace is definitely a highlight for me.
However, the real ‘kickster’ had to be the look Brennan gave Booth when he commented upon the attractiveness of the lawyer. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the ending, but it was that scene that really drove home the concept that Brennan was the one struggling with her feelings. It just screamed self doubt for our ‘attractive and sexy’ forensic anthropologist. Booth, you got some s’plaining to do.

Certainly not my favorite episode. “Bones” (the show) normally has some humor and I like that, but this was slapstick.

Maybe it’s because we’ve had so many new episodes in a row, but I loved the slapstick humor in this one. I laughed the whole time. It brought out the funny quirks belonging to each of the characters. Booth leading the group in song was hilarious.

That said, it’s getting pretty obvious that the network is messing with the order of new episdoes. Although character-driven, I know Bones is a procedural, which allows some freedom for FOX to use it as a trusty utility player in the line-up from time to time. But lately, this has come at the cost of some much-needed continuity, especially with some pretty intense final scenes between Brennan and Booth and b-stories like Cam and Michelle that don’t seem to be coherently building over time. A little more attention to continuity would definitely help.

This episode felt odd, but I think it’s because of the complete use of humour. It was funny, and sweet, and I (as the proud owner of a 2003 Echo), LOVED the use of Toyotas! Go Matrix and Sequoia! Being an on-again off-again watcher this season, I had no idea about “Michelle”, but it was neat to hear, and kind of funny that Cam got suck back at the lab with the stolen corpse. Oh … also LOVED the “King of the Funeral” quip, but it made me sad for a moment because I recalled Zack and the disaster of last season 🙁

I liked seeing the team with a different backdrop this week. Forget the fact that there’s zero chance any of that would stick in court, seeing as how nothing was done with an injunction/warrent/legalities in mind… but that’s all well and good. We can suspend disbelief since it is, after all, a tv show. 🙂

I loved Booth’s line “I can be devestatingly charming when you’re not around” (paraphrasing)…. it spoke volumes about their relationship and how they feel and act around one another.

Was SO SURPRISED that Brennan knew the words to Amazing Grace and how cute was Booth trying to get everyone to sing and not fight.

“King of the Funeral” was awesome, because it was so unexpected. Hodgins HAS been all over the place this season, but it doesn’t ever feel *out* of place for him to be all those different things, which I dig because it shows how much of these characters the writers have really delved in to.

Not my favorite episode but “king of the funeral” is up there with the best lines (and most unexpected) of this season. I miss “king of the lab”.

Oh, thanks for all the comments! GMMR has the best faithful readers. And since I can’t write like 2000 word essays for these I always love when people mention parts I didn’t! And how about Brennan vs Booth’s hand motions for the widow and the undertaker?? Haha

I liked this episode, but I have to admit that I’d probably like it less if it were the only episode that we were getting this week. They did a good job of making it a real “caper” episode.

I was also a fan of the last conversation between Booth and Brennan where they revisited the talking to the dead thing that has come up a number of times. That was sweetly done and indicative of their friendship.

I can’t exactly remember, what episode it was, not in the to far distance, where bones and cam are alone in the lab, and slips that she smokes; – while typing it triggered my memory, it was when the intern, who is/was a practicing Muslim, and cam refers to how some take breaks to pray while others to smoke, referring to herself, but quickly covers it up-

I don’t think the episode was aired out of order, I think the end scene dropped more clues on the whole “who is aware of the love thing” from last week. Booth and Brennan have had that conversation (or at least several along those lines) several times in the past, but she has never been so accepting of his feelings. She has agreed to what he has asked, but she never accepted his feelings as being valid in the past. I think that Brennan is aware of her feelings for Booth but doesn’t trust that they will last (humans don’t mate for life, after all). She doesn’t want to lose their relationship, so she fights the feelings. However, the more that she is around him and comes to accept his views on life and love as being valid–the harder it gets for her to be so logical about it.
