SMALLVILLE Season Finale - Give Me My Remote : Give Me My Remote

SMALLVILLE Season Finale

Once again please let me take a moment to thank another member of Team GMMR that has brought so much to the site this year.  Sarah first joined the team taking on weekly reviews of CALIFORNICATION. When she offered to take on one of her personal favorites, SMALLVILLE, I was so happy.  As I’ve said before, I’m thrilled when new people join the team that can cover shows not previously talked about here on the site.  So the Sarah and to all of the members of the GMMR community who contributed to her reviews, I say thanks!

Surprised anyone? I knew that we were in for a clever twist (per the Cassidy Freeman interview) but I didn’t guess we would witness the death of three characters on Smallville! The easy prediction was Davis Bloome but not Jimmy Olsen. He is such a key figure in the Superman storyline. Who would have thought the show runners would kill him off?!

Although it was sad to see him go they did send him off in style. Jimmy finally got the confirmation from Clark himself that he is in fact the red blue blur. He made amends with Chloe, finally gave her his wedding present and saved her life from Davis Bloome.

When it comes to Davis Bloome dying, well that was inevitable. We knew from the start that Doomsday wouldn’t last and neither could Davis but the death of Clark Kent as well? After shunning his kryptonian side for so long and embracing the human part of him, Clark has decided that putting the race up on a pedestal is where he went wrong. Initially I thought this was part of the twist minus Jimmy dying but I had it all wrong! On to the highlights of last night’s episode.

In the opening of this week’s episode Clark must make q choice for all of mankind. Told by Rokk that by saving Chloe he has also in turn saved Doomsday, Clark contemplates his destiny. Rokk explains that tomorrow is the day he dies. He decides with the help of Black Canary and Bart they can put Doomsday deep within the earth’s crust, splitting him into two. The plan doesn’t include Oliver since his confession of killing Lex.

In the meantime Oliver has Jimmy on a mission to Tess’ office at the Daily Planet. While there he bumps into Lois who is also trying to track down Chloe and Doomsday. After breaking the encryption on Tess’ computer Jimmy takes off to Chloe’s location while Lois stays behind to keep watch. Tess shows up and the much anticipated fight scene begins. I definitely liked the Tess/Lana showdown better! Tess is looking for the orb and Lois comes across the legion ring which shoots her off into the future.

When Jimmy shows up to Chloe’s location he comes across Clark who has a kryptonite filled dart in his back. Oliver apparently talked the gang into leaving Clark behind so they could finish off Doomsday for good. This was the best part of the episode for me. Seeing Jimmy’s face light up when he finds out Clark is in fact the red blue blur was a great way to go before the show runners sent him packing. And in his kind nature Clark asks Jimmy to forgive him and asks him to give Chloe her wedding gift.

While all this is happening the others have successfully nabbed Doomsday who pleads to be killed against Chloe’s wishes. Breaking into a rage Chloe manages to split Doomsday and Davis before Oliver can take action.

Soon after Doomsday escapes he begins to wreak havoc all over Metropolis. Clark shows up in time to save a little girl before he is hurled into a store front. After total chaos erupts and cars are flung Clark speeds Doomsday off into the sky and into a power plant.

Saving the best for last Chloe and Jimmy finally share a few minutes in what was to be their home before Davis drives a pipe into Jimmy’s side. After we all thought Jimmy was dead he gets up one last time and finishes Davis off for good.

By the end of the episode both are dead and Lois is missing. Angry at himself Clark tells Chloe it was all his fault and leaves her behind in a home he thinks she should abandon. In warp speed he explains that Clark Kent is dead and disappears.

A great episode in my opinion minus the loss of Jimmy Olsen. So Smallville fans don’t hold back! What did you think of the the Smallville finale?

Sarah is from Massachusetts and currently writes for several TV and music websites. She loves Smallville, Heroes, Everwood, and of course Californication.

Nice recap, but you forgot to mention the touching scene with Henry “James” Olsen’s younger brother (the real Jimmy Olsen?). Chloe giving him the camera was perfectly done.
