SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE Spoilers

June 10, 2009 by

The SO YOU THINK YOU DANCE sleuths are already earning their keep.  Tonight the Top 10 guys and the Top 10 girls will be paired up in the first night of competition.  And we’ve got the scoop on who is paired with whom, who choreographed what, and the different styles we’ll be seeing tonight.

As you may or may not know, SYTYCD actually records the Wednesday night performance show on Tuesday night. But the Thursday results show is live.

If you just can’t wait until tonight and you must know right now all the juicy details, keep on reading.

Top 20 Couples | Dance Style | Choreographer

  • Paris & Tony | Hip-Hop | Napoleon & Tabitha
  • Asuka & Vitolio | Broadway | Tyce Diorio
  • Caitlin & Jason | Bollywood | Nakul Dev Mahajan
  • Ashley & Kupono | Jazz | Wade Robson
  • Kayla & Maksim | Samba | Louis Van Amstel
  • Randi & Evan | Jazz | Tyce Dioro
  • Jeanine & Philip | Hip-Hop | Napoleon & Tabitha
  • Janette & Brandon | Foxtrot | Louis Van Amstel
  • Melissa & Ade | Contemporary | Mandy Moore
  • Karla & Jonathan | Cha Cha | Tony Meredith

I of course wasn’t in the studio for the recording (someday…), so this information may not be 100% accurate.

Let’s discuss…

Far be it from be to question the legitimacy of the competition, but there are some interesting style choices tonight. Listen, it’s the first bit show of the season. The producers need to make sure people are dazzled and that some of the more compelling “stars” of the season are given every chance to shine. Perhaps that’s why…

  • Philip Chbeeb, one of the guys poised to perhaps win it all, just happens to get Hip Hop tonight.  Not to take anything away from Philip or his unbelievable talent, but this guy is good for the show.  He brings that guaranteed WOW factor. I’m sure the judges want to show him off as much as they can in this first night of competition.
  • Another guy who just happened to get Hip Hop was Tony Bellisimo. This is another guy the producers need in the competition. He’s the “raw” talent that will most likely provide the “growth” storyline that the producers (and audience love).  In past seasons, this storyline has played out not most notably with Jailbait Ivan and Dominic. Both great dancers in their own right, but both showed us so much more than we were expecting.  They’re hoping Tony is that guy this season.
  • Another judges’ favorite, Evan Kasprzak, was “lucky” enough to pull out Jazz this week.  Would giving him a Broadway routine in Week 1 be a bit too obvious?
  • I was surprised to see that they were pulling out Bollywood in the first week.  Last year was the first season for this style of dance and it was a HUGE hit.  Let’s hope it’s not wasted in the first week of competition.
  • Louis Van Amstel of DANCING WITH THE STARS joins the show this season. I love when they bring new choreographers in. You never know just what to expect…and the newbies like to show off a bit so we usually get something extra special.
  • Mandy Moore and Wade Robson are choreographing tonight.  Le sigh. I can’t wait!!

Thoughts on the top 20 pairings?  Are you excited for the genres of dance we’ll see tonight? Any of your favorite choreographers showing their stuff tonight?  Are my conspiracy theories just a bunch of BS (probably)? Are you as insanely addicted to this show as much as I am?

OMG WADE IS BACK!! I know he was doing a Vegas show all last summer, but he was sorely missed. I’m so excited to see what he brings. I really missed Wade last season!

I’d be more excited if I knew more of the dancers. It’s really hard to get a handle on some of the pairings. What I am excited about are choreos and the styles!!! Wade, Mandy, NapTab, and Bollywood ensure at least half the show will be fantastic!!!

I can’t wait to see what kind of craziness that hottie Wade Robson pulls this year. Louis Van Amstel must be replacing the sex offender, kind of sad really because I loved said sex offender. I want Shane Sparks back and SOON!

Really excited for Kupono to be doing a Wade routine….that has the potential to rock the kasbah.

I agree that there are lots of people who got “lucky” with their routines this first week. Both ballroom guys got ballroom styles (not necessarily their primary style, but there’s still a certain comfort in that, I’m sure), Evan and Randi got jazz, Kupono got Wade (which should compliment his style), both hip hoppers got hip hop, our ballerina got contemporary (which is as close to ballet as this show comes) with her contemporary partner. A lot of coincidences? I think not.

I feel kinda bad that Brandon and Janette pulled foxtrot for week 1; it’s a toughy, but I think that if anyone can pull it off, these two can.

@Randi I don’t get it… was there some controversy with a choreographer? A quick google search on Shane Sparks had him come up clean, so I don’t know to whom you are referring.

Randi, this is up there with my favorite comments of all time:

“Louis Van Amstel must be replacing the sex offender, kind of sad really because I loved said sex offender.”

I had to Twitter it. Hilarious!

Mojomichael – Alex DeSilva, a former choreographer & part-time judge, was accused of raping four girls. (See: https://www.givememyremote.com/remote/so-you-think-you-can-dance-judge-arrested/)

I think week 1 is always an “lucky” week for the dancers. The producers want the audience to be wowed by everyone and it will give us a chance to see if there is anyone who won’t be able to hold up to the pressure of learning a dance so fast. We’ll know by tomorrow who needs to step up (so to speak) and show us some personality. I may not have my favorites picked the first week but I usually know who I DON’T like by week 2.

Yeah, I also kinda loved Alex DeSilva, too bad he is bad.
