SUPERNATURAL: Are You Ready for the Fifth (and Final?) Season

September 10, 2009 by

[Note from GMMR: I’m going to be walking through a mine field of spoilers until next week when I’m fully caught up on SUPERNATURAL. Case in point – this post from Nicole about tonight’s season premiere. Sorry Nicole. I wish I could read it before posting, but I just can’t take the chance.]

Despite the drought of original programming in the summer, I have to admit that September really snuck up on me and I can’t believe that it’s already fall tv season. That being said, I am so excited for tonight’s return of one of my favourite shows, Supernatural. It’s pretty safe to say that most SPN fans were blown away by the level of storytelling in season 4 and I know that everyone is dying to see what happens after the cliff-hanger we were left with back in May. After the jump, we’ll review where we left off (spoilers to the end of last season!), and discuss where we might be headed in season 5.

Season 4 brought a whole new level to the show, introducing us to celestial beings and prophets, fleshing out the hunting history of the Winchester clan and Sam’s role in the Apocalypse. Oh, and then there’s the small detail of Lucifer being released from hell to walk on earth. We also spent a good part of the season watching the brothers grow further and further apart as they disagreed over how to try to stop Lucifer’s plan. For long time fans of the show, it was difficult to watch the growing distance between them – I’m hoping that in season five, we’ll see the brothers more unified than we’ve seen in a while.

I’ve seen a few clips from tonight’s premiere (some of you may have seen these online), and while I won’t describe them in detail so as not to spoil you, suffice it to say that I was very happy and even more excited to see where this season takes us. A couple of not-too-spoilery points: we have not seen the last of Chuck the Prophet (yes!) and the boys may have found a new word to take away from their overuse of “douchebag” – “asshat”. As an avid user of the word asshat, that made me smile.

One little (big) quibble with the upcoming season that I’m having huge difficulty with is the news, announced a few weeks ago, that (casting spoiler alert) none other than Parasite Hilton will be guest starring in an early episode. For the love of god, why? I have been proven wrong again and again when I’ve questioned the show with some of their choices, but I honestly can’t imagine a situation where I won’t mind her sharing the screen with the talented cast of this show. We shall see…

Lastly, there is a lot of speculation that this will be the final season of the show, as Eric Kripke has said many times that he always imagined it as a five season story. He has made some comments lately that maybe they will continue next year (and Jensen Ackles and Jared Padelecki both have six-year contracts, as opposed to Kripke’s five-year, so they may be obligated to come back even if Kripke bows out). I’d personally be uneasy to see a return of the show without its creator, but it’s too early to get all worked up about that yet.

What will the rise of Lucifer mean for the show? As you all know, only Kripke knows for sure. Are you excited? What have you missed the most, and what are you most hoping for in season five? Any thoughts on this possibly being the last season? I will leave you with this video, a really awesome promo released by The CW – spoilerphobes be warned that there are several quick cut clips taken from the upcoming season, but other than highlighting a couple of faces we haven’t seen in a while, it doesn’t give away much detail in terms of plot. I guarantee it will get you pumped for tonight (and fyi, the song in the promo can be downloaded from the CW’s website). See you all back here tomorrow for a recap of the premiere!

OMG, I am BESIDE myself with excitement! And I’m with you on Paris–I was grossed out at first, but then I realized I’ve never been let down with Supernatural, so I think it’ll be okay. They use good judgment, and I think that’s a nice segue into me agreeing with you on the Kripke factor. I love J&J as much as the next girl (and that is to say, a lot), but I think he’s really what makes the show great.

I’m a relatively new Supernatural viewer … I caught reruns of the 4th season on a CW affiliate here in Canada throughout the summer, so I’m up to speed on everything Season Four. I don’t quite have the history for the other 3 seasons, but I was able to make do with what S4 gave me. Having said that … WOW. It’s a wonder I didn’t pick this show up sooner! J&J are fantastic, and the episodes? Stellar! “Asshat” is my new favourite word, and I find myself throwing it into conversations more and more.

Having only seen the S4 finale last Thursday, I’m already excited and anxious to see what tonight’s premiere will bring. Lucifer!!

Oh my heavens I am WAY beyond excited! I don’t think I’d even really heard about Supernatural until this past year when it started being covered on GMMR. I had some time on my hands this summer and started checking out the first couple eps of the series. Let’s just say that in less than 2 weeks I’d devoured every episode of all four seasons, and have been anxiously awaiting the return of all the wonderful-ness that is the Winchester bros and Supernatural. Looking back, it’s hard to believe I haven’t been watching it all along — I feel THAT invested in the show.

SB – I’m keeping those same thoughts re: Paris for now – maybe they’ll tear her character limb from limb? That would be nice. But I swear if she says “that’s hot” even once…..

Kimber & Kelly – hey! So glad that there are two new fans of the show to join in the fun this year! I was also a late convert, after season two aired, and I can’t imagine that I ever DIDN’T watch it.

I caught up after S1 or S2 on DVD, which I actually think is a really fun way to do it. I’ve got the seasons all at my house (except for four, so if anyone wants to bequeath one upon me … *wink*), and as soon as the series ends, I’m going to watch them all marathon-style. This show was, like both Chuck AND The Office, MADE FOR ME.

You know what makes me most excited? All the people that are new to the show that will be tuning in tonight? I have my one recruit for this year and the one form last year and 4 from the year before. And I am not counting you Twitter people I know have been watching over the summer! I will also agree with SB that is is a GREAT show to watch on DVD all in a row!

As for that yuckadoo being on my show? In Kripke We Trust, right? I can only hope that she is killed in a totally gross and bloody and dismembering way! Rumor has it she has a sense on humer. Good. Please to be dying by beheading or someone stabbing you in the face.

I have been so busy I am somewhat spoiler free. Much more so than in previous years. I have seen the big stuff but I fell the excitment of not knowing what is going to happen! Less than 6 hours! Bring it!

Love that song. 🙂 Never heard that version. I am loving the promos, recaps, and everything so far! The premiere was awesome.

I just don’t see why everyone is so freaked out about Paris Hilton! She’s REALLY good at making fun of herself! Did anyone see her on My Name is Earl? Or even her TV show! She makes fun of herself a lot. 🙂 I wouldn’t say she’s a talent but at least she knows she’s not.
