COUGAR TOWN: Josh Hopkins on Breaking Up, Singing and Jennifer Aniston

August 18, 2010 by

Let’s talk COUGAR TOWN, shall we?

Sure, the ABC comedy doesn’t get as much attention as something like MODERN FAMILY, but it just kept getting better and better as the first season rolled on, didn’t it?

But what’s going down in the new season?

GIVE ME MY REMOTE caught up with Josh Hopkins (Grayson) before filming started so he didn’t have any concrete answers for us — but he did tell us what he thinks will happen and what he wants to see happen. (Hint: it involves Jennifer Aniston and a fantasy sequence.)

COUGAR TOWN season 2! What can you spill?
Josh Hopkins:
I don’t want to be a totally boring interview, but we haven’t started shooting. I haven’t read one script. But I do assume — when last we left COUGAR TOWN, my character and Courteney [Cox]’s character were an item — I’m sure they will break up. And I’m looking forward to that. That’s going to be fun.

You don’t want them to be happy for a little bit? You’d prefer for them to have the on-off relationship drama?
JH:
Well, I mean I like the will-they-won’t-they aspect of it, but it’s going to be fun to break up. If they stay together, it’s going to be really boring. I know the writers will do a really fun breakup. So I look forward to that.

Once they break up, it should be more of a are-they-aren’t-they dynamic instead of a will-they-won’t-they one.
JH:
Right. And the awkwardness of them having dated and them still being together as friends, it’ll be fun.

And neighbors. They really can’t escape each other at all, unless one of them moves.
JH:
Right. I hope not! [Laughs]

Plus, considering how much they drink on COUGAR TOWN, I don’t think Jules will be abandoning your bar anytime soon, so I think you’re safe.
JH:
I like it. I like it.

Not to mention there is the unresolved issue of Grayson and Laurie’s hookup…
JH:
You’re very astute. You’re right. You do watch [the show]! [Laughs]

Of course I do! Will that perhaps be part of the inevitable Jules-Grayson breakup?
JH:
I’m sure it will. I’m sure that will be part of the whole breakup process. That will be right in the mix.

Good to know. What else would you like to see happen this season? Obviously there have been rumors about Jennifer Aniston coming on to the show…
JH:
I would love to see that. I would love to see those two actors of comedy together. [She and Courteney] are like comedy ninjas.  And they’re good. To see them back together again, playing off one another would be amazing. Plus, she’s really pretty.

That would be rather unfortunate for you if you had to stare at Jennifer Aniston all day. You have such a tough job.
JH:
I know. But I’d make it through the day, I suppose.

And hey, you can pin part of the Jules-Grayson breakup on her. Jennifer Aniston steals you away.
JH:
I think there should be a fantasy sequence where I have a dream and they have to film it — I don’t even care if they use it [in the show].

It could be character appropriate, especially if he and Jules are starting to get serious. Grayson could panic and realize he needs more than one woman in his life.
JH:
I agree. We have to pitch this. We must pitch this. I like it.

And the most important question: how much will you be singing in the new season? I feel like we need more Grayson singing in season 2.
JH:
Wow. I know! They were talking about that. I have a ball with that. It’s just fun. I write most of those songs and they go, now write about this. I will say, when I did a duet with Sheryl Crow, that was horrifying. It was the biggest thrill I could have and I was horrified because I can’t really sing or play so well. I was like, “Whoa, this is intimidating.” But it was fun. And she was cool.

Any chance we might get an album of your COUGAR TOWN songs? Or maybe some snazzy ring tones? I think we need them.
JH:
Right? I think you’re right. “Confident in my Sexuality”?

I think that would be an excellent ring tone.
JH:
Ring tones! People, get on this!

I don’t think ABC would mind making a few extra bucks.
JH:
Ring tones, people!

What do you think?

You okay with a possible Jules-Grayson breakup?

Or do you wish they’d stay together a little longer?
