BONES’ David Boreanaz: Brennan Needs to Chase Booth in Season 6

August 19, 2010 by

After last season’s much discussed BONES season finale, Booth will return to D.C. having made some changes in his life.

But what did the man behind Booth have to say about these new developments?

GIVE ME MY REMOTE caught up with David Boreanaz (Booth) to find out what brings Booth back home, to get his take on Booth making Brennan jealous with his new girlfriend Hannah, and to hear why he’s ready for Booth to be kicking a little more butt this season…

Booth obviously had a lot going on while he was apart from the Jeffersonian team. Will we see any other changes in him aside from his new relationship?
David Boreanaz:
He’s definitely changed, because he’s more confident in his grasp on what’s going on in front of him. And obviously [with] his interactions with Bones, he’s going to be like, hey look how great my life is, I’m going to try and make you jealous, look who I have. [He’s going to] try and turn the tables around a little bit, cause that conflict.

So does Booth actually acknowledge that part of the reason he’s in this new relationship is to make Brennan jealous and make her see what she’s missing?
DB:
Yeah. That’s the idea. You want her to chase me this season a little bit.

That is fair, since Booth has spent the last five seasons chasing her in his own way. For their relationship to actually work, she might need to be the one to chase him for once.
DB:
Yeah, I think that would be nice.

When Booth left Hannah to return to D.C., did he think he was ever going to see her again? Did he want to see her again?
DB:
Well, he definitely wants to see her. He had to come back [home] because of [his son] Parker. That’s the big epiphany for him. He had to get back to his son. Something happens in the first episode while he’s training these insurgents that’s pretty sad.

Does that mean we will see more of the father-son relationship between Booth and Parker this season?
DB:
Yeah, I think so.

A lot of fans are already anxious about the relationship between Booth and Hannah. Are they getting serious?
DB:
I don’t think it’s necessarily getting majorly serious — I mean, it’s serious already, so it’s kind of like, oh, there we are. I’ve come back from Afghanistan [where] I met this war correspondent and she shows up at the diner. We shot that scene [where she arrives the other day] and it’s like, there you are, there is it, that whole awkwardness. But yet, hey, I’m going to try and make [Brennan] a little jealous here. It’s tit for tat there. You’ve got to be able to look at it for what it’s worth and see how both relationships work with each other. But I do know someone is going to get killed this season!

I’ve heard rumors about that. What is up with that?
DB:
I don’t know! I don’t know who is going to get killed. Could be anybody.

Safe to say, it’s not going to be Booth.
DB:
I’m wearing black [right now]. I don’t know! [laughs]

And apparently there’s going to be a new serial killer coming on who’s a sniper. Do you think that will mess with Booth’s head a little, given his past as a sniper?
DB:
I’m sure it will, but I don’t know anything about it.

Is there anything you want to see happen for Booth this season?
DB:
I’d like to see him do more action stuff. And I love the interaction between me and [Katheryn Winnick (Hannah)] so far. It’s fun to see how [Brennan] reacts to it.

A whole new dynamic for those characters?
DB:
Yeah, you have to twist it up and also tease the audience to keep watching these two characters.

As far as the action goes, have you gotten your wish this season so far?
DB:
We did a big action sequence [in the season premiere] when [Booth] was still in Afghanistan. I was over there fighting and training Afghan soldiers and I get a call in the middle of taking out a few insurgents. No big deal, just a regular day in training for me. It would be great to see how we could incorporate that more. I’ve only done maybe about 10 percent, a small percent of action stuff. I wish I could do more. But it’s hard, scheduling is hard, it’s just difficult.

But after Booth has been in a war zone, you’d think he’d be pumped and ready to tackle more action in D.C. — bust down a few doors, etc.
DB:
Exactly. I would like that fine.

Would you like to see Booth showing off more of his action skills this season?

And what do you think about him trying to make Brennan jealous?

From DB’s take on what’s going on, it sounds as if, for Booth, Hannah is more about Brennan than really about trying to move on to someone new. I like that just fine, although I’m not crazy that DB loves the interaction with Winnick. I really don’t want them to spin this whole SO thing out to the point where it just looks like Booth is trying to get some payback for the 100th.

As for action, anyone who’s watched Angel would love to see Booth kick down a few doors and snap a few bad guys in half.

  2. Cee Cee on August 19th, 2010 6:10 pm

Ew. He’s *trying* to make her jealous. Boy, I hope that blows up in his face! I thought he was genuinely trying to move on. Then again, it might be a little bit of both. Very interested to see how this turns out.

Now, Hart Hanson MUST go back and watch old eps of Angel. DB can certainly kick ass and I’d love to see that side of Booth a little bit. Some violence as a little catharsis.

All in all, I’m pretty pumped for S6! 35 Days baby!

  3. Tina on August 19th, 2010 6:18 pm

That’s what I was thinking Cee Cee. David may be seeing it as Booth trying to make Brennan jealous, but that’s not necessarily how the writers will write it. Also, DB said that, but said he wants to see Hannah and that they are already serious and that he really likes the interaction between he and Katheryn(which I think is a great thing to make this arc believable). David tends to contradict himself, a lot lol He did it in Angel days, as well 🙂 So, we’ll see how it plays on screen.

THIS @EL and Cee Cee! David was great with the action on Angel. He kicked major ass on a weekly basis. I miss S1-S2 Booth badassery. So, I hope David gets his more action wish, this season!

  4. Emily on August 19th, 2010 7:09 pm

Agreed, @Tina. He really does throw contradicting statements out there, all the time. I think he does it to throw a little bone to BB shippers because he knows it’s going to be something they won’t like. So, he’s teasing and trying to give hope to shippers. DB, it’s not working. Sorry, bb lol

I fourth that DB needs more action on Bones. He handled it for 5yrs on Angel and he handled it in S1-S3 of Bones. NEEDS MORE ACTION & ASS KICKING 😀

I think there might be a difference between the writers’ goals for relationships and the characters’ goals. If Booth is in the relationship basically saying, ‘I don’t care about Hannah, but want to hurt Brennan and make her jealous’ then they’ve got huge problems on their hands, because that’s just not the Booth they’ve shown us in the past. But if DB is speaking more for the writers goals — that they’re using the relationship to make her jealous, that’s a different matter.

And yeah, I think Marisa tried to get a real answer to that, (with her ‘so does Booth actually acknowledge…’ question) but the answer is rather confusing. I’ve noticed that he and Emily both confuse their pronouns when talking about their characters (‘me’ rather than ‘him’), making it harder to know whether he’s answering as a writer, an actor, or the character.

Okay, I have to say it. I don’t believe the only motivation is to make Brennan jealous. I think it is to make fans through something at the TV. I got burned with David saying wooing was going to happen in season 5. I personally did not see that much wooing and frankly if this is the case I hope Booth gets hoisted with his own petard.

What really makes me crazy about DB saying this is that Brennan has never purposely hurt Booth. In fact, when she turned him down she thought she was protecting him. The writers did a lousy job in the last 6 episodes in explaining exactly from what she was protecting him. My guess is that Sweets told her about the brain scan and that Booth’s feelings and emotions might be wacky for awhile and so she thought she was protecting him from something he would regret later. If that is the case Booth coming back with Hannah will only reinforce that she did the right thing. Well, maybe all the Brennan bashing will stop if Booth is not portrayed as the injured party.

Also, Emily has said that though Brennan will be pining and jealous she ultimately wants Booth to be happy whether he is with her or not. My hope is that she doesn’t chase, but moves on like an adult and tries to find her own relationship, but for real or as real as a TV show can be.

    Marisa I appreciate your questions!

So tell me – does Booth love Hannah? Or does she just appear and he takes advantage of the situation?

Is the audience going to understand that Booth is doing this to make Hannah jealous? ummmm what does that make Booth? It’s not that I care about Hannah – she’s definitely disposable.
But really – what’s the moral here?

All’s fair in love and war?

  8. jenlovesbones on August 19th, 2010 9:48 pm

My reaction is a lot like ED’s reaction to Hannah at Comic-Con. *Thumbs down* *Disproving Raspberry sounds* Quite frankly, if Booth is really using Hannah to make Brennan jealous, Brennan deserves better. And yep, that’s a B&B shipper sayin’ so. On the flipside, I also don’t want him to be really in to Hannah. *Thumbs down* *Disproving Raspberry sounds*

  9. Tara on August 20th, 2010 12:04 am

LMAO Booth’s using the GF to make Brennan jealous.. 😀 Now that is a serious relationship.. 🙂

  10. Teebee76 on August 20th, 2010 4:08 am

The bit about him coming home for Parker, cos something sad happens makes me wonder if they are gonna kill off Rebecca??

I’m also really liking the idea of Brennan chasing Booth a bit. It’s true that “you don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone”, I think it can only make things clearer for her when she hasn’t got him on tap 24/7.

Definitely need more action Booth too. He needs to get back to kicking doors in and stop following Brennan around like a lovesick puppy!

  11. Yssel on August 20th, 2010 5:18 am

I really guess season 6 is not for me..
How can a relationship be serious if a few months before the same man told another woman he KNEW she was the one?
Oh, then, is it to make Brennan jeaous? What are they, teenagers?
I also believe there are some things that really don’t work on tv. One of them, is a woman chasing a man. A man chasing a woman is romantic, a woman chasing a man (who is sleeping with another woman) is pathethic. I hope this was just David speaking his mind and not what the writers have in mind for Brennan.
DB is also saying that Brennan will chase Booth pretty much the whole season. I had hoped to start watching after winter hiatus, but here I guess I’ll just completely skip the whole season.
Anyway, the more they talk, the lamer it looks like, to me.

Thank you Marisa for your great interviews.

  12. carole on August 20th, 2010 8:22 am

Everybody should just give the show a chance/set back and watch.

  13. ann on August 20th, 2010 9:04 am

Everyone feels that Booth trying to make Bones jealous hurts his character/ thought he was a better man. What does this say to Parker?

  14. ann on August 20th, 2010 9:30 am

More I think about it dont sound liked Booth changes are for the good, IF Booth and Hannah SHACK UP together.

  15. carolyn on August 20th, 2010 11:47 am

Did Booth tell Hannah all about Bones when he was in Afghanstan and she willinglly follow him to D C TO HELP HIM maked her jealous/ I HOPE thats the way they have this written,

  16. carolyn on August 20th, 2010 12:55 pm

The Morale is all fair in love and war.

  17. Bethany on August 20th, 2010 4:11 pm

Can’t wait to see how season 6 plays out. It’s going to be awesome. I’d LOVE to see Brennan get a little jealous, just to help her along in getting in the right head space. I think it could be good for her to chase him a little, put herself out there and take a risk and open up. Hannah is a pawn in my eyes–I’m not concerned about their relationship at all.

  18. Nick on August 20th, 2010 5:49 pm

LMFAO. Oh, David. Playin’ everyone…One interview at a time. Don’t get too excited about what he’s saying girls/guys.

  19. ann on August 20th, 2010 7:37 pm

David is trying to stir fans up about show thats already on shakey ground. why?

  20. Nick on August 20th, 2010 10:16 pm

@Ann, he has nothing to lose that’s why. Also, it’s his job, as an actor, to hype the show, to try to sell this and that whether it’s happening or not. This is the business. It gets people talking. Look at all of us talking about it. Whether it’s negative or positive response, it’s getting a response and I’m sure HH & Co., is happy with that. You can either tune in or not. I’m tuning in.

  21. anna on August 21st, 2010 12:28 am

I know these comments make it sound liked we dont like BOOTH but we do,we just dont like the Hannah part of it.

  22. carolyn on August 22nd, 2010 7:49 am

thought BRENNAN was the STANDARD sounds liked he forgot that when he hookup with Hannah.

  23. Danielle on August 22nd, 2010 6:04 pm

People nick is right DB is a paid actor on a hit show doing his job to add hype. Having said that I think it’s all a little bit true, Bones IS booth’s STANDARD. However he can’t have her so he’s dealing and trying to move on. Don’t know about any of you but in the past when i’ve been forced to ‘move on’ where I would have perferred something else you try to move on AND cause a little pain or jelousy toward thoses who forced a ‘move on’. The its all fair in love and war is poetic and true. And as for what it says to parker… his fathers HUMAN people! whether you would like to admit or not even as adults when your hurt you can quickly drop to teenage behaviours EVEN when you have kids, it’s not like you suddenly are mature 100% of the time.
SO nick’s right tune in or don’t it’s your choice, but I’m with him tuning in…. bring it on!

  24. carolyn on August 23rd, 2010 7:15 am

I CAN see this storyline working for BOOTH. he wasnt using HANNAH ,THINGS snowball and got away from him/ and was made more then he intended.

  25. carolyn on August 23rd, 2010 8:17 am

We as fans have made to much out of the HANNAH storyline/I THINK the making BONES JEALOUS was meant lighthearted tit for tat and we have made it into him using HANNAH and what does it mean to PARKER when none of that was intended/ could be becaused we dont want to see him with anyone but BONES.

  26. MELISSA on August 23rd, 2010 12:28 pm

I just got into Bones this past month… and with dvd purchases and on-demand have watched all 5 season…. and am completely obsessed with Bones/Booth. I am willing to watch Bones be jealous… might be interesting since we don’t see her become emotional very often, that was more Booth’s thing. But as long as Bones and Booth get together eventually! This is a fantasy tv world, give us our happy ending! I think everyone is afraid that if they get together all the sexual tension would be gone… only if the writers screw it up! I think the biggest mistake writers make is taking them from all this tension to the very next episode a happy well-adjusted couple. There are so many nervous, awkward, passion-filled firsts that could be dragged out and explored… and a lot of humor that could be derived from them trying to hide a relationship or them being nervous about the first time they spend the night together, or whatever… drag out the firsts and keep that awkward, but passion filled tension between them as long as possible and it would be a WONDERFUL gift to the fans!!!

  27. carl on August 23rd, 2010 1:51 pm

PEOPLE the key to the Hannah storyline is BOOTH didnt know she was coming/ he sat there tells BONES about HANNAH make it sound more then it was and looks up their is HANNAH THEN IT SNOWBALLS.

  28. carole on August 23rd, 2010 4:19 pm

BOOTH let BRENNAN catch you and give us a big kiss.

  29. Nina on September 26th, 2010 8:13 am

Yeah, I do think Booth is trying to make Brennan jealous, but not consciensly. I can’t see Booth do that, because he thinks he’s over Bones, and he’s not the kind anyway.

  30. lynette grueber on December 30th, 2010 11:42 pm
