The Vampire Diaries Season Premiere: The Return : Give Me My Remote

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES: Let’s Discuss ‘The Return’

September 9, 2010 by

WARNING: If you haven’t yet seen tonight’s (Sept. 9) episode, stop reading or you’ll be spoiled…

So THE VAMPIRE DIARIES’ second season premiere picked right back up where it left us last spring with Elena arriving home, discovering her daddy/uncle John minus five fingers and fighting for his life after Katherine’s attack. Thankfully (or not, depending whom you ask), daddy/uncle pulled through just fine… as did both Jeremy and Caroline.

Shocker!

Not that I’m complaining. Wasn’t eager to lose any more members of the cast… though Katherine is clearly not on the same page as I am. Did she really just kill Caroline??

It cannot be.

I mean, Katherine and Damon really do belong together, they are two peas in a pod: She smothers Caroline with a pillow, all pissed off because Stefan doesn’t want her. And Damon snaps Jeremy’s neck (don’t worry, he’s cool ’cause he’s wearing the ring), all pissed off because both Katherine and Elena want Stefan, not him.

At least that’s what they’re sayin’… Who ever knows what’s really going on with these chicks?

Anyway, are we worried about Caroline? Surely the show cannot cut her, right? I’m thinking she’s cool too, because of the blood Damon gave her to save her from her car accident injuries at the beginning of the ep.

And what do we make of Tyler’s handsome uncle, Mason Lockwood, who’s come to town to mourn the death of Tyler’s pops? Should we trust him? I’m really wondering what his real deal is and how long it’ll take for us to find out.

Probably not forever, given THE VAMPIRE DIARIES’ love of a lot happening, and fast. Bless Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec for that… and other things, such as bringing Ian Somerhalder’s abs back to TV.

But I digress…

A few other topics we should discuss:
1) Who else is feeling the sexual tension between Bonnie and Damon and thinks she should be the one to assuage his broken heart? And wouldn’t it be cool if their first time together went down just moments after Bonnie somehow beats the crap out of Katherine? Or, perhaps, just moments after Damon saves Bonnie from a near-death experience at the hands of K-Dogg?

I know there are a lot of Damon/Elena shippers out there, but I don’t think that coupling is going to come to fruition any time soon. He just kinda-sorta tried to kill her brother. She really hates him now. So we might as well let Damon get some quality action elsewhere. All that anger Bonnie has for him would make it way hot.

2) Any thoughts on daddy/uncle’s assertion that fighting vamps is the family legacy? Does this mean Jeremy is fated to turn against Elena and Stefan, eventually becoming a slayer?

3) Do you think Katherine is really back just because she wants Stefan? Or is there a greater purpose to uncover?

That premiere seriously kicked ass. Even better the second time around! Thanks for getting the post up so quickly, Korbi.

The Dobrev is cramazing as Katherine. She’s going to bring so much (more) chaos to Mystic Falls. I’m going to love to hate her.

The Damon/Stefan scene killed me. This was the second time I watched the episode and both times I felt the need to hit the rewind button to watch Damon’s face was Stefan acknowledged D’s feelings for Elena.

And my poor Sweet Caroline (bha bah bah). Does this mean she’s going to be vamping it up now? Just when she found her heart as a human she has to go get all undead on us.

Korbi – I’m thinking that Jeremy might became a slayer. At the very least he’s going to join the Fellowship of the Sun 😉

Oh and as I tweeted yesterday…I already looked it up and Steven McQueen is 22 years old, which means he is old enough for me to gawk without it being illegal. Inappropriate yes, but NOT illegal.

So much to love. So excited the show is back. Can’t wait to chat about it with the rest of you tonight and this season!

Certainly dont agree with you. Bonnie and Damon? Really? No no. And maybe Elena hates him now, but as Katherine said “this sounds like the beginning of a love story. Not the end of it”. The DE fans can and will wait as long as it takes

I’m so thrilled Caroline is going to be a vampire now. She and Matt are the most boring characters, so at least now she’ll be interesting. That’s exactly what Katherine wanted, too. She knew that Damon had given Caroline some of his blood (Bonnie told her when she thought she was Elena in front of the Lockwood mansion) and she is counting on Caroline to give Damon and Stefan the ominous message- “Game on.” Basically she’ll do whatever it takes to get what she wants, even if innocent lives are at stake. She’s baiting Stefan & Damon.

Wasn’t Damon just trying to turn Jeremy? Hence the whole, “You want to be a vampire? Turn your emotions off with the flip of a switch, blah blah blah” stuff. He knew he had ingested Anna’s blood less than 24 hours before that. Aww, Anna… RIP.

I’m kind of bummed that Damon showed his ass… well, his vampire side. I really do want to see him and Elena together at some point. Sure, she’s meant to be with Stefan. True love, etc etc etc. I still want to see all of that sexual tension come to fruition at some point. Ya know, a really hot steamy affair. I just want to see Damon take off his shirt frequently. Someone get Ian a guest spot on True Blood so we can see him totally naked. Sorry, I perved out… Anyway….

This season has the potential to be really amazing. Wait, what happened to Alaric in the season one finale? Is he still in Mystic Falls? Didn’t Isabel drop by to see him? I want to know what happens there.

So yea, this season has the potential to be AMAZING. I had written this show off as another cheesy teen vamp show when I first heard about it, but I’m so glad I decided to give it a chance (although it wasn’t until Spring of these year that I did so). The smoking hot men are reason enough to watch. Paul Wesley- gorgeous (a little thin these days but whatever, he’s still gorgeous). Stephen R. McQueen- BEAUTIFUL (even though I feel gross for saying that because he’s so young). The guy who plays Alaric- totally handsome. Uncle John- just kidding, he’s gross. IAN SOMERHALDER- One of the sexiest guys I have ever laid eyes upon. With all of these hotties in the cast, the show can’t go wrong.

I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the rest of this season.

Damon and Bonnie? No way. She hates him. Don’t see that changing anytime soon.

  5. Ace on September 10th, 2010 12:31 am

Don’t see any DB chemistry. Besides Damon tried to kill Bonnie and Bonnie tried to kill Damon and will probably continue to do so, so if DE is not happening due to Damon’s failed (and probably magic ring aware!) attenmpt at Elena’s little brothers life DB is NEVER EVER happening due to their tendency to, well, try to kill one another…

Also katherine’s quote to Stefan about how hate is the beginning of a love story and not end is sooo a foreshadowing for DE. Damon’s humanity is back, his emotions are all over the place and it left him in an extremely vulnerable state where Katherine’s & Elena’s rejections totally destroyed him. And he has hit rock bottom, as he tried to severe himself off from Elena completely as being “just her friend” is not bearable and he hopes with her gone from his life his humanity -which is why he hurt will be gone too. But as he probably noticed, his humanity is not going to go anywhere. He always had an incredible capacity to love and as he has tapped into it, it seems to be overtaking him. Trying to distance Elena from himself is not going to change that. So rather he will have to look deep inside himself, decide what he REALLY wants and man up and work to achieve that rather than try to band-aid the hurt somewhere. He will suck up the humiliation, suffer the hurt, make amends and be the best he can be. And as he develops as a person, so will DE because SHE is the reason it is all happening.

This episode was nearly too much for me! and Oh My Gawd to Caroline at the end! Though a small part of me is crying out that she would make an awesome vampire…

As for the points made at the end there. I don’t really agree. I’ve never even considered that as a possibility on the show myself. Personally, I prefer Bonnie when her story lines have nothing to do with the vampires. She kind of gets lost in their story lines and I kind of forget about her when she’s around them. I’m not really feeling it at all, to be honest…

In turn, think the dynamic between Damon and Elena just got kicked up a few notches. It sucks about what he did, but as they try to get past it, it will make them even better to watch. He needs to deal with his rash decision, not hop randomly into every bed he can. There’s no character growth in that. The writers broke my heart with them today, but I only see it getting more interesting now.

As for Jer, I REALLY hope he doesn’t go the vampire hunter route… He’s met good vampires. He LOVED a good vampire. I think that would be destroy my view of him if he did that.

And I definitely think there’s something more to Katherine’s plan than just coming back for Stefan. I find it rather interesting that she has no intention of killing Elena just yet, and I still harbor the curiosity as to why the two look the same to begin with.

That said, I’m quite curious to see what does wind up happening between Stefan and Katherine as the season goes on.

There’s something bigger going on here. I’m excited for it. It’s never as simple as they make it seem on Vampire Diaries.

R u fucking kidding me? If Damon and Bonnie happen I will be so pissed I don’t think I’ll watch anymore. What happened for DE today couldn’t have been worse. I’m still team Damon and Teaneck Elena and team Damon+Elena!

  8. Marissa on September 10th, 2010 1:59 am

Damon and Bonnie are a couple in the books I believe (not 100%, I tried to read the first book and it was like Clueless with Vampires, so i stopped), so I could see it happening.

I LOVED LOVED LOVED this episode. There was so much going on with so many characters but it wasn’t confusing at all. I’m glad they’re going into Tyler’s character more, Kev and Julie said that thigns really start changing for him in episode 6, so I can’t wait.

I agree with whoever said Caroline was just coming into her human heart and now she’s a vamp. It is sad, even worse for Matt because this can not end well. I feel like it is possible Jeremy will become a slayer and I see him recruiting Matt as well.

I loved/hated the scene between Damon/Katherine in the house. Why couldn’t he see that she was playing him! Also, Stefan all super protective and bad ass in this episode was soooooooooooooooooo damn hot. I like this Stefan.

Final thing, can someone PLEASE!!!! cut Jeremy’s hair. It’s looking disgusting.

    can’t wait till next week!

  9. nia on September 10th, 2010 8:19 am

Actually Marissa, no you are wrong. Bonnie and Damon are NOT together in the books. Damon is totally in love with Elena. Bonnie kissed him twice and he didnt pull away and that was only in the book that Elena is dead.
Its only Elena for Damon. In the books and in the show

  10. pamela on September 10th, 2010 8:32 am

Ewww? Hell no! Damon and Bonnie WERE NEVER A COUPLE IN THE BOOKS! God, what a way to twist reality, but then that’s how DB likes it. lol, it came from delusions, so yeah, I don’t expect anything different from their five shippers.
And on the tv series, no, don’t think they should ever be together, one, they don’t have chemisty. Two, it’s totally OOC for Damon to fall for her. Bonnie doesn’t have the angst, the strength, the heart and the passion that Elena (who is just human) has. Bonnie has to use her powers to make her point to Damon, coz Damon doesn’t bother to understand her. Elena doesn’t even need any powers, she’s just herself, and yet Damon fell for her. And when Damon loves someone, he sticks with it. So no, Damon going for that Willow-copycat is not likely.

Bonnie & Damon Hook up YES PLEASE!!!! i want Caroline to stay, but kick some ass. I think Stefan should step in and help.. Yummy uncle Lockwood.. not really feeling him, it seems too.. i don’t know.. i don’t think he fits.. not smooth enough.. wrong actor for that part. Missed Alaric.. Poor Aunt Jeena so out of the loop.. can’t waite to see how Jer turns out after all this info..
all in all a great start to seaon 2.. this is gonna be awsome..

  12. Em on September 10th, 2010 2:31 pm

Korbi, I agree with everything you said and I did sense a little DB chemistry right before she gave him a migraine. 🙂 I loved Stefan’s anger and protectiveness this episode. It was awesome! I am about to watch it again.

Poor, Matt. He can’t catch a break. Now his new girlfriend is dead/a vampire.

  13. Megt on September 10th, 2010 3:49 pm

Great premiere, Ian Somerhalder put in a phenomenal performance he had me feeling every emotion!! He and Elena have great chemistry, not that I don’t love Stefan’s character because I do. Stefan and Elena are sweet together, but Damon and Elena sizzle! I am looking forward to Caroline’s storyline she should make an interesting vampire. Where was Alaric??? Nina Dobrev does such a great job playing both characters, sometimes I am so engrossed I forget the characters a the same person.

  14. Em on September 11th, 2010 11:58 pm

Megt, great point about Nina. I felt the same way!
