BONES: Michaela Conlin Teases an Upcoming Hodgela Development

November 11, 2010 by

As some BONES fans have noticed, things have been a little different this season. The addition of Hannah as Booth’s girlfriend means that characters like Angela, Cam and Hodgins are more often in the background than some fans would like.

But rest assured, when I chatted with the always delightful Michaela Conlin (Angela), she said that things will start to pick up soon, starting with Thursday’s all new episode.

Read on for our chat about Hodgela, their families, belly padding, Cam and why Angela is being kept away from “cougar cruises”…

So how are things going on BONES?
Michaela Conlin:
[Laughs] They’ve been going great. We’re just starting episode 11, which is kind of cool. I had to get fit for some pregnancy bellies. I’m going to start showing soon, which has been funny and fun.

I’d imagine, it probably helps you get into character, because you can’t forget Angela is pregnant if you have belly padding strapped to you.
MC:
Yeah. It’s kinda crazy because you have to do all the [new measurements] and all the clothes have to fit around the stomach, so it’s going to be an adventure, but I’m looking forward to it.

Do you know if Angela’s fashion might be changing with her baby bump?
MC:
Ooh, good question! We always talk fashion, you and I. I know that Cynthia Summers, who is our fashion designer — she’s so good — we’ve been really talking about keeping her cute amidst the belly. And I know [series creator] Hart [Hanson] and [executive producer] Stephen [Nathan] want that, too. So far, it’s a lot of dresses…and I’m trying to think what else? Boots and things that would be comfortable for a pregnant woman to wear, but we’re trying to keep her fashionable. You know, Angela wouldn’t lose that [just because] she’s pregnant. It’s been kind of fun trying everything on in a bigger size.

And as you and I have talked about, it gives you an excuse to have an extra serving of dessert.
MC:
I know! I keep joking around with them about that, how I should be eating in every scene.

If you have to wear a fake belly, I think they should give you that.
MC:
And Angela laying down.

I feel like the belly could provide some comedic moments for Angela as well.
MC:
Yeah. And you’ll have to let me know what you think about the fashion. I’m definitely interested in your opinion.

Will do. I think Angela has such great clothes anyways, I don’t think having a baby bump is going to mess that up. It’s not like she’s going to suddenly be in sweats all day and refusing to wear anything else.
MC:
No, no, she’s definitely going to rock the belly.

I know you were filming a movie during the beginning part of the season. Did that impact how much screentime you’ve been getting?
MC:
I think it did a little bit. Yeah. Thankfully, my part wasn’t enormous in [the film] LINCOLN LAWYER, but I did work a couple days and I do think it did [impact my BONES schedule]. This season has been a different season for all of us. I think because it’s the sixth season, the audience knows us pretty well, so I feel like they are spending time introducing Hannah. But we’re growing a baby, so I think they’ll swing back to us soon.

So you haven’t been in the next batch of episodes more than you were in these past 5?
MC:
I think once we hit episode 6 [airing Thursday], it starts to pick up.

Is there anything you can tease about Angela’s storyline that you’ve filmed so far?
MC:
Well, Angela and Hodgins definitely make some progress in their relationship. There is some development outside of the baby that is coming up [for them] which is kind of cool. I’m very vague, Marisa.

I’m very intrigued by that! Are things perhaps being revealed between the two of them, because they are hiding some secrets…
MC:
Sure. Sure. That’s the bone I’m throwing you, no pun intended. [Laughs] That was really corny. That’s what I’ll say about that.

Fair enough. Will we have a chance to see any of Hodgins or Angela’s family so far? His family seems to be a bit of a question mark, because we were told he was the sole heir to the Cantilever Group, but we don’t know if he has any family on the other side. Has that been clarified?
MC:
It’s so good that you remember the name of that [group]. It’s amazing. You’re so cool! I’m going to start calling you whenever I forget things. [Laughs] I hope we do [meet their family]. I really want to start seeing his family. I think it would be really interesting, especially with the new development. I’m sure with the baby coming along, a lot of family is going to pop out of the woodwork. I’d really like to see a sibling or two if he has one. I’ve heard he might.

I know Angela wanted to keep things on the down low with her pregnancy, but she’s told nearly everyone — something Hodgins is unaware of. Now that he wants to throw a party to break the news to everyone, is he going to find out her secret?
MC:
You’ll just have to wait and see. That’s obviously something we’re going to have to come up against soon. You’ll see the way that plays out, it’s very funny.

It seems like, at this point, everyone knows except for the squinterns. And maybe her father.
MC:
I don’t think she’s told her dad yet. I think Angela is honestly a little in shock that she’s having this kid. I think it’s the last thing [she would’ve planned for]. I think if a premonition from the future would have told Angela in season 1 or season 2 that she was going to have a kid, she would have dropped over. I think she’s definitely still adjusting to all of it. So she hasn’t told her dad yet.

I know she made a joke once that she wanted millions and millions of kids, but I don’t know if she wanted them to be surprises.
MC:
Yeah. I think she thought [it would be] in the future. [Laughs] In the far away future.

I know we’ve talked about the fact that Angela is going to have a difficult pregnancy. Have you filmed anything about that yet?
MC:
Not yet. It’s complicated to talk about, because we’re ahead of what you’re seeing and we had to sit down and figure out how many episodes I was going to be this big [with padding] and that big and now we’re starting to get into that [seriousness]. Not yet, but soon.

Very cool. Well, we need to talk about Angela’s amazing bone reconstructing machine from the last episode because I kind of want one of those…
MC:
I know! Isn’t it hilarious that I made that? I watched the episode and I was like, “Damn!” [Laughs]

Angela is a rock star. I think every viewer walked away from that episode wondering where the heck we could find one of our own.
MC:
I know! The cool thing was it really looked that cool as we were shooting it. Sometimes they put stuff in on post [production], but that actually looked that cool. They do such a great job with that stuff. We have so much help looking incredible, which is such a credit to our producers. But I was very impressed with that [machine].

And given Angela’s hormones, is she going to be interacting with any of the hot boys on the “cougar cruise” in the episode airing Thursday night?
MC:
No, because there’s another storyline running parallel to that that she’s more involved with. So no, she was thankfully not allowed on the cougar cruise. [laughs] Because she would have probably been the first one on there with the younger guys. But she’s married now, so they have to keep her locked up. But there’s a storyline going on in the lab that she has some scenes with.

Is it involving Cam?
MC:
Yes.

Would you like to tease any more than that?
MC:
No. [Laughs] I can’t, Marisa!

Rats.

Any theories, BONES fans? And what do you think the surprising Hodgela development could be?!

Let’s discuss…

Hah! Fun interview. Great rapport between Michaela and yourself.

My hopes are that they get locked in the lab, and conversation topic turns to relationships and then to sex – and Cam complains about lack thereof and Angela mentions her trying the other half of the sea and Cam says uh…she’s never kissed a girl and Angela offers to show her how it’s done and since theyre locked up in there anyways (with Intern Edison just to make his discomfort funny)….

I’m sure I could find that in slashfic if I went searching, lol.

Whatever it turns out to be, I’m sure it will be finely acted! Such great characters. With awesome fashion sense and the *best* shoes!

Pregnancy can make you, well, in the mood, so with these two I think they should get back stressing Cam out (“Security cameras, people!”). I’d love to see a scene where a hormonal Angela attacks Hodgins in the storage room, “damn all these layers of clothes.” I understand the meaning behind why he wears them, but I will not complain if he sheds a few. 😀

“It’s not like she’s going to suddenly be in sweats all day” Actually Marisa that would be very funny.

I think it would be awful if Angela was suddenly in sweats all day because she’s pregnant.I never gave up my style (or my high heels) during my pregnancy so I’m pretty Angela will look hot throughout her pregnancy.
I’m not thrilled with idea of a scare around the pregnancy. Why can’t they just make it an easy like millions of women have all the time? Enough goes on during the nine months that extra drama around it isn’t really necessary.
HH said in one of his summer tweets that someone “blurted” something and that it would “be huge” by the finale. To me that meant Angela who will deliver the baby then. He was upset that Angela’s pregnancy was leaked, but to me he gave it all away when he tweeted that. I immediately thought that Angela would come back from Paris pregnant.
I’m really looking forward to this storyline. When they had the scene of Angela nodding off in front of the computer screen last week, I could totally relate to that kind of tiredness in the early stages of pregnancy. I fell asleep at my desk once on a quiet afternoon! Luckily the boss had already left.

  6. Lee on November 12th, 2010 8:51 pm

I love Angela 🙂 She’s one of my fav characters. But, I do have to say… please kill off Hannah or something! Bones and Booth need to take their relationship to the next level!!!

  7. Jen on November 12th, 2010 9:19 pm

Totally agree with Lee and Carole, Hannah needs to get the boot from Booth. I miss the chemistry that used to spark from Bones and Booth. I need to live vicariously through them!

  8. Joyce on November 13th, 2010 1:51 am

please get rid of Hannah. Bones and Booth have too much chemistry going on between them for you to ignore. Get them together ! Down with Hannah!

  9. Ethel on November 13th, 2010 9:47 am

I totally agree-get rid of Hannah-she doesn’t have the chemistry with Booth that Bones does-and quite frankly is a irritating character!

  10. victoria on November 13th, 2010 11:40 am

i think that cam at some point will try to give angela parenting advice and angela will take it the wrong way. a faud may happen that they have to get over with before it interfers with an investigation.

  11. Sara Lake on November 13th, 2010 12:21 pm

I don’t like Hannah one bit with Booth, maybe with someone else but not Booth. Makes me wish they would suddenly pull a Dallas and have that entire Hannah thing just be a nightmare that Bones is having.

  12. irene on November 13th, 2010 1:56 pm

it was only a matter of time before they brought in babies. i just hope “Bones” isn’t Quote, ” going to jump the shark”. as far as Hannah is concerned she is just a bump in the road. Lets see what the writers are going to make this lead to. I’m not thrilled with her character either but Seely certainly deserves to have someone fill Temperances’ void for the time being.

  13. Sunny on November 13th, 2010 6:13 pm

    Multiples?

    Get rid of hannah……

  14. Lou Ann on November 13th, 2010 6:59 pm

Hannah is not a good match with Booth. She’s too winny and doesn’t have enough between the years to be a good partner with Booth. Bones can take her in one beat.

  15. @McKaylaBug on November 14th, 2010 5:21 pm

I hate how everysingle Bones article immediately becomes about Hannah. It’s an arc. It will end, like all the rest. Take a Xanax and relax.

Great article! Michaela is precious and I love how this read like two good friends discussing clothes 🙂 Thanks for being awesome, Marisa!! Ooh, and I’m betting the new “development” will be twins! It doesn’t necessarily have to be a problem with the pregnancy. Twins would be SO CUTE!
    Kayla.

  16. Brooke Pyeatt on November 16th, 2010 11:20 pm

I totally agree with McKaylaBug, I hate how everytime I read an article about Bones or anything is said about the show, it turns into a hissy fit about Hannah. I am 100% Hodgela shipper and I can’t WAIT to see what happens with the whole pregnancy storyline! I really hope that Ange doesn’t lose the baby or have any problems, but I have a bad feeling something is going to go wrong. It seems like every show is doing that now, Army Wives and Grey’s Anatomy are two that come to mind. As long as Ange doesn’t lose the baby I will be happy.
