BONES: ‘The Doctor in the Photo’ You Ask, I Answer

December 3, 2010 by

Hey BONES fans! After months and months and months of teasing, the Brennan-centric episode we’ve been dying to see is finally set to air next week. You saw the promo, right? Intense.

Since we’re sadly going to have to skip our weekly chat this Friday — don’t worry, we’ll be off getting you scoop — and because many of you had questions about the hour, we’re tackling a few of them now…

Love Bones, but I haven’t really been feeling this season so far. Is it going to take off soon? – @AnnaIsenhower via Twitter
Based on our comments section, you’re not the only one who has been lukewarm about season 6. Things have certainly been different. But there is no way “The Doctor in the Photo” won’t prompt some sort of emotion from you. It’s a different type of BONES episode — it actually has a very cinematic feel to it — but Carla Kettner wrote a fantastic script that explores Brennan and her issues in a way we’ve never experienced before.

How soon after the episode will the petition to get Emily [Deschanel (Brennan)] a freaking Emmy start? I’m all in. – @Jessicanicole91 via Twitter
When the opening credits begin, you’ll already have a good idea of how major this episode is for Deschanel. She gives quite probably the strongest performance of the series to date. I stand by my tweet that if you aren’t moved by her incredible performance in the hour, you have no soul. (Apologies to the soulless people who may be reading the blog, I’m sure you’ll enjoy the ep, too.)

Does Bones tell Booth that she made a massive mistake and is in love with him and that she bought Hannah a ticket home? – @lalisa via Twitter
Unfortunately for the Hannah haters, she’s not on her way out in this episode. She may not have a huge role in it — she makes a key discovery in the case, but aside from that, she’s only in a couple other scenes — however her presence is major. But yes, as you’ve seen in the promo, Brennan does admit she’s made a mistake. But the question is what mistake does she think she made?

Is next week’s episode going to be as emotional as the end scene for the 100th was? – @BrainySmurfette via Twitter
You saw Brennan crying in the promo, right? I don’t care if that woman is crying happy tears, sad tears, tears from laughing too hard or whatever, if Brennan is showing some kind of emotion, it’s going to invoke a similar reaction in me. So yes, “The Doctor in the Photo” is going to be an incredibly emotional episode. Is it as emotional as episode 100? I think it will depend on the individual fan. Some will love the reaction it elicits and others might not. It’s certainly high up there for me in terms of the level of emotion.

However, the hour isn’t entirely super serious. The very beginning is a bit lighter in tone, though meat eaters might think twice about eating chicken again.

Does Angela get involved in Brennan’s breakdown at all? – @doctorsuez via Twitter
Angela is the first to get a glimpse of how much the case in this episode is bothering Brennan, as Brennan sees similarities between her and the victim. She tries to use logic to take away some of Brennan’s worries, like any real BFF would. In Angela’s few scenes, it’s clear how much she cares about Brennan.

I just want to know how the lab reacts to the Brennan-ish victim. – @yvettelgh via Twitter
They see the similarities between the victim and Brennan, but not to the extent that she herself sees. However, many of them are concerned about her and get some help to make sure she’s okay.

Will us B&B lovers get something of substance in regard to their relationship? …Isn’t Brennan looking longingly at Booth? – @kelseyb615  via Twitter
Yes, absolutely. As Stephen Nathan promised, the episode features an emotional upheaval and much of it has to do with Booth. Things come to a head in a semi-inappropriate place, but given Brennan’s emotional state, it’s almost understandable. For the first time all season, Booth is going to have to deal with Brennan’s reality. And for what it’s worth, a pre-season 6 Booth seemed to be making an appearance in much of this episode.

Does next week’s episode live up to the promo hype? – @lilstrawberry23 via Twitter
Yep.

By the way, the report that Emily Deschanel’s directorial debut has been delayed is unfortunately true. The good news? Fox has confirmed that David Boreanaz is still slated to direct episode 16. Here’s hoping Deschanel gets her chance this season because she seemed to be so excited when she initially shared the news of her new challenge.

Thoughts? Anxiously waiting for the hour? Any theories about what goes down?

Ah, man! I was already excited for this, now I’m bouncing off the walls! Meanwhile, I think I’ll stock up on tissues; I have a feeling I’ll need them. Thanks for answering these, even if the anxiety is now greater than ever. 🙂

  5. @Sarinna on December 3rd, 2010 1:49 pm

I don’t want to get my hopes THAT high you know in B&B terms, but I am very excited about how it is going to work out, how much will Hannah’s presnce affect and which will be Booth’s reaction on Brennan’s “I missed my chance” declaration 🙂

    THANKS FOR YOUR AMAZING ARTICLES!
    love from Argentina

  8. goobs on December 3rd, 2010 2:55 pm

i’m super excited for this episode, BUT i’m not getting my hopes up that much will change b/t Booth & Bones for a long while. even if Bones admits she made a mistake in regards to her relationship with Booth, what’s Booth going to do? dump the woman that he supposedly is so in love with? boo…it may be a very emotional episode, but it still might not be enough to suck me back into watching Bones as religiously as i used to the past 5 years. i’m still trying to get my eyesight back after having to watch all of that gross making out/sex/googly eyes/hand holding ickiness b/t Booth and Hannah. sorry i sound so pessimistic! i’m just so sick of the whole Hannah blah, blah, blah convenient road block. i don’t like feeling sad when i watch a tv show – which is why i can turn the channel. i don’t even watch the show live anymore b/c it makes me feel sad/grossed out from the weird B/H relationship. ANYHOO, rant over 🙂 i really am looking forward to this episode and i hope that things will start changing for the better.

  9. Festina Lente on December 3rd, 2010 3:15 pm

I’m thoroughly determined to enjoy this episode no matter what, because we so seldom get a Brennan POV and I really love her.

But what’s going to happen after that? By this stage in season 6, I have become extremely sceptical of the writers’ ability and/or willingness to pursue the implications of what might transpire next week. The writing, and characterisation have been abysmal this season, the Shallow in the Deep notwithstanding. I love Carla Kettner’s writing, I think she’s the only decent Bones writer left (yes, that does include both HH and SN). So I’m fully expecting a good episode with some sort of massive revelation from Brennan that the writers never mention again in January. It’s happened before so I would definitely not be surprised.

Also, I’m happy that the squints try to take care of Brennan a little, it was about time. They’re the only real family she’s got now.

  10. Rebeccapedia on December 3rd, 2010 3:36 pm

I have the severe fear over this episode, I’ve gotten REALLY tired of Bones, and now I’ve basically pinned all my hope on this, if it turns out well I will forgive every terrible misstep the show has made…
Brennan crying in the promo broke my heart, but I swear to Lucifer, if that’s a trick and she’s talking about something other than Booth….
Well really all I’ll do is come here and moan and nobody actually cares about that, so whatever!

Also, every time I see Hannah, all I can think about is how I really hate her, and that the only way they could’ve made me feel the way they want me to is if they’d cast Sarah Michelle Gellar…… BAM! conflicted! 🙂

  11. marple on December 3rd, 2010 3:39 pm

As much as i do want to see Emily´s great acting, i can´t set myself up for more dissapointment and watch anything else. Think i will check that scene out on youtube or something later.

Will not go back to watching an episode until i read that there is something REALLY changing. I have a hard time to beleive there would be anything good happening, as we all know Hannah is going to stay on forever even if it will be in the background. So whats the point, had enough of all agony with jerk ass Booth and hurt Brennan.

  12. mary on December 3rd, 2010 4:01 pm

I’m in the same position as Marple: I’ve stopped watching Bones, and have moved onto BBT and the Wm Shatner comedy.

Hannah’s presence has taken over the show:
It’s now Seeley/Hannah who are the center, not Brennan/Booth.
The core group – Cam, Angela, and Hodgins – are doing bit part work.
    The pacing’s off.
Booth and Brennan aren’t the same characters they were in Season 5 — or even in Season 1.

Like Marple, I’ll catch up on ED’s scene on YouTube. This episode won’t stop the slide.

  13. Tracie on December 3rd, 2010 4:49 pm

SO excited for this episode. The 100th was one of my favorite (emotional) episodes so I can’t wait for Emily to be able to show how much she deserves that Emmy.

Since I heard that Emily’s directorial debut was pushed back, I’ve had the feeling that it’s going to wind up not happening this season -and I’m a bit annoyed about it on her behalf. I’m sure that if it were David who was directing the episode, they would have figured out a way to make it work.

  14. Mary @ Giving Up on Perfect on December 3rd, 2010 5:03 pm

Oh my goodness! Last night’s promo had me in tears, so I was already excited for this huge episode. And now? I just don’t know if I can wait! 😉

  15. Jessica on December 3rd, 2010 5:08 pm

could her saying “i missed my chance” be referring to missing her chance to live a normal life? i feel like the promo gave too much away.

  16. Aly on December 3rd, 2010 5:24 pm

I’m even more excited now!! Thank you for posting this!! 😀

  17. carl on December 3rd, 2010 6:21 pm

fans promos are misleading last night the scene in the diner was shown different/hope the ratings will go out of sight on this one/but still feel brennan tell hannah about her feelings for booth.

  18. Eve on December 3rd, 2010 6:38 pm

I was excited to watch the episode since I heard about it last summer. Since this season has been so sad to watch, I have lost all interest in the episode, which is hard because ED is my favorite character. I don’t care about B & B as a couple anymore but to go on and on about her being alone is just too sad to watch. Booth gets more serious and Bones will become BFF with Hannah.
It will probably go through the remainder of the season and at Booth and hannah’s wedding something goes wrong and they don’t get married. Too much of the JAG feeling. This SL should have been wrapped up by now. We just are all viewing this love triangle because of Hart Hanson’s infatuation with KW. Fine, give Bones a normal love interest and let B & B solve cases and be friends again. Maybe they can even get Brennan out of those trench coats.

I will read the recap of next week, but I have erased all of the episodes that I dvr’d to watch at a later date. The couple of episodes that I watched this season were just too sad and/or silly. Brennan just looks idiotic at times and the remainder of the cast have become the recurring characters. I really missed Angela and Brennan.

  19. Barbara on December 3rd, 2010 6:53 pm

I hope this episode comes through better than the few we’ve seen so far (yawn)!..the cases have been really mediocre and the attempts at trying to make Brennan a comic have been relatively lame!..I watch this show because the cast of people are some of the finest actors on television, but they haven’t been given much to work with this season ..I’m so tired of seeing Hannah and Booth attempting to be “in love” by merely having sex in most of the episodes she’s portrayed in!..It’s going to be a “wait and see” thing for me..I don’t want to get my hopes up cause it’s a long way down when that happens!

  20. Chelle on December 3rd, 2010 9:47 pm

I was so excited to see this episode but now I’m really afraid to watch it! One thing you said makes me nervous! “But yes, as you’ve seen in the promo, Brennan does admit she’s made a mistake. But the question is what mistake does she think she made?” What does that mean?? And its going to be so sad to see Booth shoot her down, which he will because ED said herself that the relationship between Booth/Hannah is going to get more serious…so as good as this episode looks to be, I’m worried we are putting too much hope into it!
That said, I would be estatic to be proven wrong and will be the first one to admit it if I am! 🙂
Bones has been my favorite show but I have to say the B&B moments is what drew me back week after week. I really miss looking forward to a new episode. I hope that all changes soon!

  21. K.R on December 3rd, 2010 11:45 pm

In the ep. 9 after Brennan admits she made a mistake, we see a black & white scene of Brennan and Booth parting to Afghanistan and the Maluku islands. I see it as the writers telling us that Brennan admits her mistake by saying ‘no’ to Booth. What I have gathered( its just my view) so far from all the interviews on Bones and other Blogs is that Hannah will leave Booth for her personal reasons and Booth and Brennan would be together in the upcoming episodes, well at least Hannah won’t come between Booth and Brennan. I can see the way the writers are going with the story. It is beginning to make sense but they are upsetting the fans on the way. It is okay with me as long as B&B get back together and bring back the unique friendship they had. I love Brennan and I hurt when she hurts. Not for long I hope.

  22. Tiffany on December 4th, 2010 12:47 am

The only way I can see this ending at this point, is Hannah will leave Booth for her own reasons, and eventually Booth will go back to Brennan…Brennan will end up second best and that is NOT a scenario I am comfortable with. ED has said that Brennan does admit that she made a mistake about Booth. She has also said that Booth and Hannah get more serious (meaning Booth obviously turns her down). ED also said that Brennan is going to become MORE closed off after this ep! Can anyone tell me what the heck the point of this is, although I realize that I am basing this a lot on speculation, there really doesn’t seem to be a point in putting Brennan (and us) through all of this pain.

  23. marple on December 4th, 2010 3:58 am

Agree with you Tiffany. WHY are we supposed to just set us up for more dissapointments. They aren´t giving us anything to look forward to. Everything they are telling us is just more pain..

Plus would we trust their “good” as that is what we have right now. Everything is sooo good .It makes me wonder if any on the show actually watch an episode.

Thank you Marisa for great interviews.

  24. poodle on December 4th, 2010 4:54 am

I’ve read other interviews from the Emily Deschanel conference call and combined with other spoilers for the season and this article, have no interest in watching this episode now. And it actually was the only one I was interested in seeing this season.

Genuine questions – Did the producers realise or anticipate what a massive hit the character of Booth is/was going to take with this storyline?
Did they anticipate that people actually think more and more that Brennan shouldn’t be with him?
Did they think that people would question whether he actually even likes her anymore, let alone love her?

  25. ct on December 4th, 2010 9:44 am

This episode sounds like it will be awesome on an individual level, and I may watch it for that reason. As far as what it will contribute to the season as a whole… far far too little, far far too late.

I hope this episode prompts Brennan to open her heart and find someone NOT Booth. He disgusts me these days. I don’t even know who he is anymore, but what I do know is that I don’t want Brennan within 10 feet of him romantically. He doesn’t deserve her. I don’t know if the writers think Brennan needs to pay for her “no” last season, but if that’s what they’re doing it’s extremely immature. Forgiveness is a big part of love. I’m not saying Booth needs to run into Brennan’s arms, but a change in attitude is definitely in order. If this episode simply represents a mere respite from Season6!Booth, count me out.

If Booth really loved Brennan and wanted her for who she is (and not only on his terms, subject to his conditions and beliefs about relationships — and this season has shown me that if he ever loved her at all, it was certainly conditional), he would have recognized her reaction for what it was — extreme fear. I don’t care how hurt Booth is, he’s become an unfeeling ass where Brennan is concerned. This is, to me, entirely inconsistent with the character we were shown for 5 years. Oddly, the viewers seem to know Brennan better than Booth does, and that is unsettling.

Frankly, Brennan is better off if Booth is with Hannah –their relationship is a reflection of Booth’s new-found shallowness. So let Brennan have the revelation, and give that big heart we all know she has (that Booth used to know existed but somehow forgot about when she didn’t say “how high” at his request to jump) to someone who actually deserves it.

As for the show, it’s been fun, Bones, but I’m not watching the second half of the season. If something actually changes, depending on when and of what nature, I might catch back up one day. It sucks so much that watching has become a chore after five seasons of loyalty and excitement about every new episode. It’s not my story to tell, but I also don’t have to watch something I find offensive. It doesn’t seem as if anything is changing anytime soon, and I have no desire to continue dreading Thursdays at 8/9 (or let’s be honest — Friday mornings because I don’t even watch live anymore).

  26. Kay on December 4th, 2010 2:04 pm

I’m with ct, give Brennan a new love interest and keep Booth away from her. Hell, write off Booth and his gf for all I care! The only thing Hanson and his cronies have shown me with this storyline is that Booth doesn’t love Brennan, never did, and the way he was before was obviously a fake ploy just to get in her pants.

Bones is a lost show that’s for sure. I don’t understand how something so great could fall so hard in a short amount of time but that is what has happened. Time for fans to move on, Bones is dead in the water.

  27. Stephanie on December 4th, 2010 2:40 pm

im a big bones fan. ive watched every single episode from season one to now! i hope this is good. im really excited for this episode. so far season 6 has been okay. its interesting to watch. but i hope this episode reveals brenens love for booth. in the last episode. you can totally see that bones being jealous of hannah. i HATE hannah!

  28. carl on December 5th, 2010 3:58 pm

read the article emily did,she says hannah not a bad person and booth is happy,so maybe we as fans should accept this/

  29. carl on December 5th, 2010 4:12 pm

marisa, ASK WILL they every do a show about sociall skills and how booth always hurts her about this and why?

  30. carl on December 5th, 2010 4:23 pm

I SAID hannah will said no if booth proposal is marriage .

  31. carl on December 5th, 2010 4:46 pm

reading some of these comments hoping the good that comes from show 9 is BONES telling hannah to hold on to booth, since she hasnt got 1 positive comment and that she will find her a new guy/ and maybe booth will waked up to what he lost by going for EASY.

  32. carl on December 6th, 2010 4:03 pm

why did they chose to turn so many fans against booth, to me they want to make us see hannah as the show mistakes/hope they are a easy fix and fans will at least like booth again,to me they were told this was a filler/it could have been handle a lot better, hope fox will wait for the fix.

  33. Sherry on December 6th, 2010 5:11 pm

The character development has become jerky. If Hanson thinks the fans are still happy, he should think again. The dedicated people who still watch have faith they’re going to straighten it out. I hope so or most of them are done after this epi. It was the depth of the relationship with B & B that made the science so fun to watch, a scientist and a gumshoe complement each other which yields deep personal feelings. Those feelings are only one sided now so the chemistry is lacking. Fix it.

  34. carole on December 6th, 2010 6:40 pm

to me for this show to be a good once was booth has got become the man fans will liked again,no matter how they seen hannah off and bones has got to show that she cares about booth/but still find her another man and let him set home alone or write him out to, or quit hurting her about social skills, yes I KNOW ITS A TV SHOW.

  35. Marie on December 7th, 2010 3:41 pm

I am assuming most people think that Brennan’s declaration about missing her chance will be a revelation that she knows now that she should have taken the opportunity when Booth told her to “just give it a chance.” I’ve tried to convince myself that this could be about some other chance she should have taken, but I just can’t do it. I think we’re going in that direction, and I’m nervous and excited about it and thankful that I’ll be alone when I watch this next episode because I probably won’t be able to breathe, and then I’ll start crying.

Two things I need to get off my chest though:

No matter how the show runners decide to further/dissolve the Booth/Hannah relationship, when the right time comes (as it will “eventually”), Booth and Brennan need to choose one another over everything else – over everything that’s ever happened (and not happened) between them, over science, over faith, over psychology, over their partnership, over coma dreams and tarot cards and most importantly, over anyone else. I’m watching this season with anticipation from episode to episode because I can’t wait to see how we get from where we are now to where I expect the writers are going to take us. I’m confident they will make the journey worth our time.

Also, I haven’t seen much reflection on something that Cam said to Booth last season that feels like it could be coming into play at this point in the story. She told him to be sure about his feelings, “because if you crack that shell, and you change your mind, she’ll die of loneliness before she’ll trust anyone ever again.” After the 100th episode, I didn’t feel like that shell had been cracked. If this upcoming episode reveals the first crack in that shell, what will Booth do? Will he be forced to decide if he really has changed his mind? Maybe instead of changing his mind, he’s built a wall in his heart to protect himself from the feelings that are still there. I can only hope that as Brennan’s shell is cracking, Booth’s wall comes tumbling down.

I think the viewers who say they are done with this show are missing out on a lot. The playful banter and flirtatious lines, the sideways glances and adorable grins – I agree, they’re as fun as can be. But the deep emotional territory we’re about to get into? This is 30, 40, 50 years kind of love we’re going to be dealing with, and I, for one, have got to stick around for it.

  36. marple on December 7th, 2010 5:23 pm

Marie i really envy your trust and hopefullness that it will be worth it. I wish i did. I just feel sad and dissappointed instead.

If i really trusted that they will get it back on track i might beable to force myself to watch.

The thing is with all of the changes in the characters, specially Booths. How would Brennan trust him again, i can´t.. I don´t think they can or will get it right again.
If the tumour or something like that was the cause of him being so cruel to Brennan ,and stopped loving her. That could be a case i could go with. It will not be enough if he just change his mind again saying – oh sorry Hannah i realise i love Bones.

It also upsets me that they aren´t giving us any hope, even though they got to know by now how dissapointed the fans are. HH even mentioned in an interview i read a while ago that “in real life, true love doesn´t always get together”. Gave me another bad feeling about how it will end.

I will however be content with them back as friends with their chemistry and bantering. Though without Hannah. give Booth a woman instead if theres no B/B.
Mostly why i stopped watching, to me there´s really no enjoying this ride at all. It has turned into the Hannah show, they are pushing this way to hard. It takes over completly.

With the little hope i do have left. I am one who has loved every damn episode in the past, until this season. I am sticking around on the forums to see if there actually will happen any changing that i would like.. If it does i will catch up and enjoy in those.

I want nothing more than get my favorite show and characters back.

Sad to say as it´s already quite a big part of the season with just crap imho It will not be worth to see them get it right in the last episode while we have H/B for the most of this season..

Kudos to those who manage to hang around for it all. Hope it will get awesome.

  37. Melina on December 7th, 2010 5:55 pm

    Hi
She will probably think about the mistakes she had done with Booth and other loves that she met before.. her life centered on her job etc… and I think that she will think just like Booth before : she has to move on…and find her perfect love also…
Of course I was a B&B fan, and still am but if it is something impossble to figure out now, why not think of something better for our Brennan…

  38. Colin on December 8th, 2010 1:07 am

I like the show, stop whinging about it you pack of bleeding hearts, all will be made right by seasons end.As Gordon Gordon said “may I subscribe hope and patience’.That includes all of us!!

I have a doubt how can conform that scanning photo its male or female can u give the details about that
